We took advantage of one of their free days (they have them 4 times a year) and were so glad we did. We, as a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 young children, ages 5 and 9), had a great time. Parking is free in the parking garage and in the overflow lots as well. We do recommend having quarters (at least 4) if you plan to use lockers there to hold your items while there. Also if your little one wants to ride the carousel ride, you will need to have $1 bills. So there are 4 floors to the museum, we recommend starting on the top floor (4th floor) to see the animals and do the carousel ride. It is less busy up there, especially if you go early in the day. The 3rd floor is a playscape for kids age 5 and under (water, sand, music, and more.) This floor also has the Power of Children exhibit featuring stories of how children have made an impact like Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and more more. There are no graphic images, but be aware there is some content that have sensitive topes that could need further discussion with kiddos. 2nd floor had a few exhibits, Take Me to Greece and Scooby Doo (temporary exhibit). On the first floor is the Dinosphere exhibit and the Riley Sports Experience. The Dinosphere has a great combo of hands on and visual only with 2 levels of activities. The Riley Sports Experience was very fun and full of hands on activities. One odd thing was that the food count on the ground floor was out of several food items by 3:30pm, so plan ahead if you need to get food from the Food Court. Overall we enjoyed our visit, spent about 5 hours, and had more than enough time to visit everything we wanted. We drove over 2 hours to visit, but honestly probably won't visit again anytime soon. We do recommend families checking it out at least once.

I had been wanting to take my kids here for awhile and due to their current ages of 11, 11, and 14, we decided to take them this year before they aged out of it. I figured they might already be too old for it, but took a chance and are glad we did. Unfortunately, I wrote to the museum days before our arrival about dietary concerns and did not get a response, so that is one con. We just brought our own food and did not dine there due to no response.
We went on a Tuesday, planning to arrive to their parking garage by 950-10a since I kept seeing you need to get there early. Instead, we arrived at 10:30 and were happy to get 2nd floor parking, which is the floor that leads right to the sky bridge, going into museum. We took food, water and a backpack in with no problem. We all wore closed toed shoes as advised on site. Parking was free. I was also happy that they charged appropriately, meaning they don't charge a teen as an adult, which makes no sense if they are still your children, you are paying to take care of, yet many entertainment places do this. Pricing overall was fair for what you get as well.
Had it not been for the indoor/outdoor sports area of the 1st floor, it would not have been worth the drive nor money to visit this museum for our age group. Overall, I'd say the sweet spot ages for the museum would be 5-9, but due to sports area and a few other exhibits, it was worth it for us adults and older kids.
My plan for going top down worked out very well. It was orderly, not too busy, and ended with sports where they got all hot and sweaty. Had we done it in reverse, we likely could not have pulled two of them from the sports to see indoor exhibits and we'd be walking around a stuffy, humid museum after getting hot outside. My biggest sports fan kid, without knowing why I planned it out like I did, was sweating outside telling me thank goodness we ended with sports, so good call. We spent the majority of our time on floors 2 and 1. Floor 3 was mainly a quick walk thru. Floor 4 was fun, but 2 and 1 were best.
Favorite exhibits included: Greece, Mini Masterpieces, Minecraft, American Pop and sports.
Cons: It was an 80+ degree April day with full sun which made the outdoor sports experience somewhat uncomfortable, bball is one kid's favorite and none of the score machines on any set of hoops were working which was disappointing, and the outdoor cars were closed for cleaning, but no one was there cleaning or doing anything else. Aside from the heat, they all still had lots of fun doing the different sports, but needed extra water. We came in with full bottles and had to buy more, which was expensive. Aside from that and not responding to an e-mail, my biggest con was the lack of air flow and air conditioning. If it is an 80+ degree day, turn on the air so people can comfortably enjoy exhibits and cool off from outdoor activities.
Pros: The pretend to be a sports caster was a hit in the indoor sports section, indoor basketball, the wide variety of sports on outside, being able to design your own room in miniatures area and send to yourself was cool, American Pop was a hit for all and like the miniatures area, you can design your own comic book cover and e-mail to yourself, there were very cool throw backs there, and they also had a little fashion designer type thing you can do, Greece was fun with the plane experience, diner and depictions of how real Greek families are, the museum was fairly easy to navigate, workers were friendly, plenty of seating, and not nearly as crowded as expected from what we read, but I think we were there after Indiana kids' spring break, free, connected parking, free refills on fountain drinks, appropriately aged pricing, ramps for easy walking, strollers, and wheelchairs, plenty of restrooms
Overall, in spite of a few cons, namely too hot inside, it still was impressive, interesting, fun and friendly enough to deserve 5 stars. My husband and I were glad to be big kids and share this experience with our kids. We've always enjoyed taking them to children's museums, but considering most are made for elementary aged kids we had not been to one for awhile. We were happy one still fit all of our ages and interests!

The museum itself is very well-done, but our 9-year-old was bored - target audience is definitely a bit younger. 5-6 is probably the sweet spot. The biggest problem was that it's HOT inside. Wear shorts and a t-shirt.

So cool! Took us 6 hours with a lunch break and we only missed 1 exhibit. We started in the basement and worked our way up. Dinos are awesome, as well as the historic stuff about Egypt, Greece, and the whole “power of children” exhibit left us speechless. My little enjoyed the water table and restaurant play area. Dinosaur train was a hit for my 3 yr old. The outdoor sports arena is a place you could stay all day and play. The price of food is ridiculous- most of my kids are uncrustables and I paid $80. If I were going again, I would pack a cooler in the car and come out for a lunch and save that money.

I thought my 11-year-old daughter might be a tad too old for this museum but it ended up being the highlight of her vacation. She absolutely loved the outdoor sports park!

I visited with my 6 children: ages 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, and 17. After seeing all the rankings as top US children's museum we drove several hours to visit and were disappointed. I go to get my kids away from screens and there were lots of screens to pull them in. Enjoyed the outdoor sports area but feel that the target age was 10 and under for everything. Similar to other children's museums but larger. We found City Museum St. Louis to be much more engaging and adventurous- that kept my kids busy the entire day.

The infant and toddler area on the third floor is lovely! The staff is courteous and patient and always ready with a smile. We had the best time visiting and cannot wait to return!

A bit pricey, but the kids had a lot of fun.The traveling exhibit (Dino Train) left a lot to be desired, but the other exhibits were a lot of fun. Our kids particularly liked the sports area (only the indoor portion was open at this time of year).

5 and 4 year old had so much fun! We arrived just after 10 when they opened. Lesson learned: buy tickets online at least two weeks in advance. They are less expensive.
We spent the whole day and easily could have gone back for a second. So much for the kids to do.
Tip: pack your own lunch. The food was not great and super expensive. We got 5 pieces of pepperoni pizza, and 4 breadsticks and it was $56.
The kids loved it and I can’t recommend it enough!

Is this more geared toward younger kids? Would it be worth it to drive 3 hours for a 12-year-old? I realize it's a matter of opinion, but I'm trying to get an idea. Thanks!

IT has stuff for 12 year olds, especially if you go when the weather is warm because they have a lot of outside activities for them to do.
How busy are you the Sunday after Thanksgiving? Hoping a lot of people will be at family gatherings.

Is this worth seeing without kids? The photos make it loon very cool but will I be disappointed as an adult with no kids?

Most exhibits are geared towards kids, but you could go and get something out of it too.
Is it worth paying $33 for my 2 year old ? Seems kinda crazy when we used to go to all of the nice museums and zoo for free in DC.

Would there be enough to keep a three year old entertained? Are any of the exhibits hands on?

There are a lot of hands on for kids of all ages, from tiny race cars you send down crazy tracks to a whole outdoor sports section to building things. This really is one of the best children’s museum

How many hours do you think we will need to do the parts of the museum and that would interest a young teen and grandparents?

I would plan 3 hours and include food court. 4 hours if you take exhibits in consideration.
Family friendly all ages, however I believe you get out what you out into a visit.
Good luck and enjoy...
