Sounds like you had an authentic experience. That brief moment you felt umcomfortable in this church, is exactly how black people feel everyday in society. Im glad you were able to escape back into white privelaged society where you are the majority :)))

The once affluent Bethel AME Cathedral in Indianapolis is now an old, condemned building suffering from disrepair. Politics infiltrated the theological doctrine and alienated the parishioners.

I am a medical student at IUPUI and was in search of a church home that was relatively close to my apartment, due to my course and hospital responsibilities. After reading the prior reviews, I was extremely hesitant about attending. However, I thought it was worth a try. My first visit (early Dec 2014) was in complete contrast to what the reviews described. Everyone was very welcoming, from the ushers to the older woman who sat next to me in the pew. She readily helped me find bible verses and navigate their program booklet. The pastor, who I later learned was recently appointed to the church in either Oct or Nov '14, personally introduced himself to myself and the other visitors.
From that point on, I have attended this church and sit in the same pew with the same older woman, who I now look upon as a friend. The entire congregation has embraced me and, from my experience, would embrace any visitor. One of the most important aspects of this church is that the Word of God is preached! The sermons are based on direct scripture and than made relatable. I always feel as though I have learned something that can carry me through the week.
The church is clearly in transition, with new leadership and a desire to build their membership base.
Please visit this church and judge for yourself. If I'm not on-call, I would be happy to meet you!

It is hard to believe the Lord wants people to segregate when worshiping his name. But this is what you get if you don't look dark skinned at Bethel Episcopal. Being light skinned I was made to feel very uncomfortable among the regulars. Not very friendly to outsiders. But they will take your contributions...I was very disappointed that my brothers and sisters didn't want me to worship with them.
