One of Helmut Jahn’s early designs from 1977, the interior carpets, furniture and paints have been changed since its opening, but it retains the light filled, airy and welcoming atmosphere. Unlike most libraries, there are no windows to the outside so you aren’t distracted by passing vehicles. The interior courtyard lets you see outside to a peaceful garden, and you can even walk out there to read your book.
It still has its flaws, the meeting rooms, private librarian offices and rest rooms break up the openness of the design. And the four large HVAC units located at each corner outside the library are ugly necessities. But if you are in Michigan City looking for a peaceful place to take a break, this library is paradise. The original design still shines.

This is one of the best libraries I’ve ever visited. For a small town they have a lot available. There is a large section for children and they have many programs for the children and for adults. Service is friendly. A very good place to visit.

Libraries have changed so much. They serve more as community centers and this library is no different. It is worth walking through and sitting down to read.

Must go see the exciting new children's section!
Everyone, employees, is always pleasant. Bathrooms clean and supplied.
The computer section is very helpful. I know that people receive assistance almost daily for looking up info to assist in legal matters and printing forms. Most are very pleased with the help they receive at library. The charges are very reasonable.

Came in to escape the cold and play during Winter break. My Son enjoyed playing with the lego and magna tile table. The children’s computer games were a hit! We ended the visit cuddled up reading The Polar Express. If you haven’t been to the library recently you need to go check out the remolded children’s section!

The staff is great, the place is clean, there are plenty of books,,,what is there to review. For goodness sake it is a library. I will say this they do the best they can with their budget.

I loved taking the kids to the library. In the winter its a perfect place to spend some quiet time out of the snow. The kids like the kids area and I liked the activities

We have found all of the staff to be very approachable and knowledgeable. Library offers various classes, I believe all of them are free. Great space with lots of light. Super selection.
