Recently viewed where I grew up just off Main Street from 1984-1987 where my Father, Thomas H Smallwood was the then mayor at the time. He was instrumental in bringing Joe Palooka into Oolitic main and I always thought it peculiar that he did but then again my dad was a bit of an eccentric. Not to mention Rocky Balboa was already committed to Philly and Batman to Gotham. Was nice to see that Joe still looks great after nearly 40 years. Nice choice Dad…..Dr Trent W Smallwood

The Joe Palooka statue is a beautiful example of Indiana Limestone carver’s work. It has been around for decades and has been relocated multiple times.
Sadly the nearby Antique Mall / Museum has closed, but a new antique / curiosity store, AJ’s Storehouse has recently opened about a half block away.
A lot of limestone from the Oolitic and Lawrence county area has been used in prominent buildings around the world, such as the Pentagon.
If you are in the southern Indiana area, you should stop by, Oolitic is conveniently located about a city block off of state highway 37, about 20 miles south of Bloomington, IN, home of IU’s Hurryin’ Hoosiers.

Northern Lawrence County, Bedford, Indiana (Marshall Township) is absolutely beautiful, perhaps the most gorgeous scenery in Indiana. The topography of the land is gently rolling, roads are good, shopping is good, real estate offers high-end homes to affordable housing. Education offered in the Bedford Schools is above satisfactory to excellent. Everything is nearby including 4-lane SR 37 to I-69, giving a 22 minute drive t+/- to Indiana University Campus in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana.

This is the heart of the Indiana limestone country - indeed the town's name is based on oolite, the type of limestone found here, and the town itself was platted by the Bedford Quarries Company back in the 1890s. It is perhaps fitting then that this 10 foot tall limestone statue found a home here between the town hall and post office (both clad, of course, in limestone).
Ol' Joe originally stood in nearby Bedford, being dedicated in a ceremony attended by the cartoon character's creator "Ham" Fisher back in 1948. It was moved a couple times around Bedford before finally being relocated here in 1984. He's still in pretty good shape except for some careful repairs to his cheek and nose - perhaps injuries from some boxing match back in the day.

Very impressive statue for a small town like Oolitic. It looks good sitting next to the Post Office and Town Hall.

If you find yourself near Oolitic, Indiana, get your camera ready. The Indiana Limestone Company decided to celebrate its centennial by commissioning a statue of comic book boxer Joe Palooka. Why commemorate a fictional character that had no connection to the area? Sadly, we don’t have the minutes of the meeting where that was decided. And what were the artistic credentials of the men chosen to create the statue? They had built limestone buildings. In the summer of 1948 their 9-foot rendering of Joe Palooka was unveiled near Bedford, Indiana before a crowd of 4500. (There wasn’t much on television in 1948.) Did onlookers ooh and ah? Or was there a collective gasp and murmurs of, “What’s wrong with him?”
For unknown reasons, the sculptors chose to depict Joe with round holes for eyes. Not the featureless orbs of classical Greek statues, but creepy, deep holes that seem to stare without seeing. When you tear your gaze away from the horrible eyes and look down, instead of the muscular, robust body of a boxer you will see the prominent ribcage of a starvation victim. In place of the expected six-pack, there is a fourteen-pack of rib bones. Perhaps an artist should have been consulted. One sculptor’s daughter claimed her father was unhappy about the choice of Joe Palooka as the subject because he wanted to do a real person. Was the resultant statue his idea of revenge?
Over the years Joe was vandalized and moved several times, and now he has obvious facial repairs and is standing next to the Town Hall on Main Street in Oolitic.

This is a very unique statue showing some of the great craftsmanship of area limestone workers of the day. My mother-in-law well remembered this 'so handsome' hero.

If you are ever in the Oolitic Indiana area, you should drive to the U.S. Postal Office and stop and see the larger than life limestone statue of Joe Palooka that is displayed there.
For those who don't know who Joe Palooka was, and he was really before my time, I believe he was a comic book or funny pages character, a boxer.
This limestone statue is a fine example of limestone sculptures that have been carved by local stone masons and shipped around the world. Cut from some of the world's best limestone. Limestone that has been used for buildings for decades around the world.
