Mummy exhibit was great. The auditory part of many exhibits in the wildlife area didn't work..Overall there were several exhibits that weren't working...which surprised us for the expensive $9 fee

Our kids, ages 14, 12, 8, and 5 all said this was the highlight of our long weekend trip to Iowa. Parts of the building were a little rundown, but that didn't take away from our experience.

This was ok, $8 admission, Civil War, lots of animals, exhibit on The periodic table with examples of Various products made from various elements. Some fun hands on science stuff.

Great museum except for the part where they are still requiring masks for children under 12. Ridiculous to do to kids that rarely get or spread the virus.

the museum is a great size for kids and elders. there are so many things to see and do. i truly enjoyed the forensics exhibit ane fantastic classroom experience. in fact, i came back to enroll my granddaughter in the class.

Even with COVID-19 closing down the hands on exhibits, The Putnam is the museum of my childhood. Amazing mummies and antiquities from around the world, environmental history from the Devonian Era to today, and thoughtful collections spotlighting the people who developed this area of the Mississippi Valley. The current exhibit on the periodic table was the highlight of this trip.

Awesome place for kids to learn and explore! We love it here! They have stuff for kids of many ages and a lot of engaging learning activities with cool traveling exhibits and educational films. They also do some really fun events around the holidays!

To my wife and me, the Putnam Museum and Science Center borders on greatness, but falls a bit short of its potential. We visited late morning on a Tuesday, and for our entire stay, we were practically alone. In a science center, being kids at heart, this was a plus because we could actually get close to and play with the displays without battling a bunch of school-aged children. However, no exaggeration, about half of the things were not working which we brought to the attention of one of the staff members. Buttons did not work, TV screens were black and not responding, the robot arm playing tic-tac-toe needed rebooted, etc.
The museum part had some interesting sections--history, natural history, mammals, oceanography, though some were in need of maintenance, e.g. "Feel the fur of these animals" where some of the samples were missing. My favorite part of the museum was the Egyptian room with ancient artifacts and an unwrapped mummy. The special exhibit dealt with Rube Goldberg-style inventions. This was fun, though two of the inventions were missing parts and/or had no easy-to-follow instructions.
The map of the museum and science center was a little hard to follow, and my wife and I were constantly opening doors to halls and offices that were not marked as off limits. We spent over two hours and enjoyed many parts of the building, but we could not help but feel that tech, maintenance or the administration needed to address some of the problems.

Since we went during the week there was hardly anyone there so we had the opportunity to play with all the exhibits! Everything is in working order, clean and informative. Had a ton of fun. Well worth a visit.

An educational and very much hands on interactive museum with the bonus of an IMAX Theater. On a recent Monday afternoon we nearly had the place to ourselves.

I have a 5 year old, 2 year old, and 1 year old... just wondering if there are enough displays to interest these young ages.

There are some elements that may interest a 5-year old, but nothing really for younger children. The museum is mostly about science and engineering -- how things work and why -- so very young children may be amused by whatever they see but aren't likely to understand it.
