Know what to expect and you will really enjoy this stay. We were expecting more from the bathroom/shower than a small room with a single toilet and shower (separated by a shower curtain. There is a nice outhouse too. It makes for some waiting for the facilities. We stayed in the tiny house and small cabin for two adults and three teens. There is room to sleep but not much more. The hosts are very friendly. The best part of the trip was a four hour kayak trip. Beautiful bluffs along the river and you end at the campground.

This is our first time camping at a different campground other than Chimney Rock Campground in Decorah.
The cabin is a lot nicer than their website leads on. Lots of amenities (big fridge, chairs, dinner table, cookware, playing cards, a crib upstairs, bedding and lot more). The campground is about 5-10 minutes to Decorah and is easy to get to. It was nice not having to use a porta potty to use the restroom (has an outhouse with a light). The owner was a lot nicer and accommodating than some of these reviews lead on. The campground is pretty peaceful and quiet.
The only downfall to this campground is the showering situation. The tent and RV campers seem to typically use the bathroom that the only shower also shares (there are two bathrooms at this campground). Paying for a $2 shower, you need to make sure it's quick in case someone needs to use the restroom. Also, I think this campground is priced a little higher than Chimney Rock.
Kayaking is more scenic by Chimney Rock but you can choose how long of a float you want to do to hit the more scenic bluffs. Still a scenic float. Hutchinson had better kayaking service (fast response time).
Overall, we were satisfied with our stay and will definitely come here again if we’re in the area. Will just need to prepare better next time.

Not impressed at all with the canoe rental and shuttle service for many reasons...canoes weren’t loads when we got there and so we had to load them ourselves, truck that we all squeezed into was filthy, we had to put our belongings in the back end of the truck that was filled with their trash (we literally had to put our stuff on heaping bags of trash), canoe had a hole in it, nobody helps you in or out when you start or finish...I could go on. There are other companies that seem to be better organized, cleaner, etc.

We traveled with friends pulling a fifth-wheel camper and a 38' motorhome. We made reservations in advance (contacted via email, then mailed a check - no confirmation of receipt). Could not reserve canoes in advance, even if camping there. If you are a tent camper and don't need much, this is the place for you as it is very scenic, but if you are hoping for cleanliness and amenities, go somewhere else. Below are my reviews for multiple categories plus pictures.
LOCATION: The campground is nestled in a little valley with gorgeous views of the hills and bluffs, surrounding cornfields, and the sunset was beautiful. There are weeping willow trees all over the property, and tons of room for the kids to run around and play. NOTE: No Wi-Fi or cell phone service whatsoever. It's about a 15-minute drive into town and very close to Malanaphy Falls. Their website says the GPS will get you lost every single time, but we used it and it took us right to it without any issues.
SERVICE: I found Hutchinson Family Farms online when looking for a place to camp in Decorah. We liked the secluded location. There was no way to make reservations online. It's all pretty "old school" with regard to that. When we arrived before lunch on Friday (had reservations for Friday - Sunday), the office was closed. There was a map and a note taped to the door that said they were at the county fair and would return around 2 p.m.. There was a box with a sign that said "Campground Information and Camping Self-Registration," but the box contained nothing. We found our spots on the map taped to the glass (both were to be 50-amp service and side by side). The only 2 spots we found in the location on the map were a 50 and a 30-amp. Our friends took the 30, we took the 50. We hoped we were in the right place. It was close to 3:30 when the owners returned. They put animals away and they never opened the office as we were going to go rent canoes before the evening was over. They disappeared into their private residence and that was that. Friday evening, ominous dark clouds began forming and there is zero cell phone service and no Wi-Fi, so we were unable to check for weather warnings to determine if we needed to seek shelter. No one from the campground came by to give us an update on the weather situation. The rains were monsoonal, but fortunately no incredibly high winds. On Saturday morning we saw the owner taking care of her animals, and she stopped by our campsite to say "hello." We asked about the second 50-amp service and she pointed back towards the horse pasture. There was a lonely 50-amp service box out in the middle of nowhere that we didn't even see. Not sure why the 2 50s weren't side by side, but the trench for running the electrical lines was still fresh, so it clearly hadn't been put into place very long. At this point, we determined that with the rise in water level and our uncertainty as to whether or not the owners would even remember to pick us up as we traveled down the river, we'd take a hard pass.
AMENITIES: As mentioned before, no cell phone service or Wi-Fi available. There is ONE bathroom/shower for the entire campground and it was not cleaned the entire weekend we were there. No hand soap Saturday and Sunday, and the same hand towel hung on the peg covered in grime that entire time as well. The shower also had an empty bottle laying on the floor, a ton of hair in the drain and soap scum on the walls. DISGUSTING!!! And for this illustrious service, there is a $2.00 charge per shower. Clearly that $2.00 isn't be used for cleaning supplies. There were no water hook-ups at the individual camp sites, so we filled our holding tanks with water from the hydrant/hose before we set up camp. The water had a horrific Sulphur smell, and we put some water in a kiddie pool so we could cool off. When we left, the bottom of the yellow pool was orange from the iron in the water, so the holding tank in the RV now has to be flushed and sanitized. There were no dumpsters marked anywhere for camper trash, and no dump station for the RVs to empty out before leaving. Basically, for the fee, you get a place to park and some electrical service. Again, if you're primitive camping, it's probably going to work out well for you, but for bigger rigs, it's not a good place. There is firewood for sale. A big tub for $20 which is in line with what other campgrounds charge.
OTHER ITEMS: The owner does let her miniature ponies roam "free range" around the property, so if you have dogs that would be upset by this, keep them inside your camper/tent or well tethered. There was also an older black dog roaming around unleashed that we never determined who it belonged to. There is what appeared to be a playground, but the playhouse (treehouse) was laying on its side on the ground with the side disconnected and laying next to it. Not sure if it was involved in storm damage or what, but not usable. It does appear there are also cabins to rent on the property, but we don't have any information on those.
This campground could be spectacular with some owners who care about service and accommodations for their guests. On the surface it appears they are more about making a "quick buck" with as little effort as possible on their end.

My husband and I have camped for many years. With this being said, the services that we received from this campground were terrible!!
When we arrived there was a sign posted ‘ We are at the Fair, be back at 2’
No problem as for a map with where everyone was to be was taped to the door.
We traveled with another couple. Both of our reservations were for 50amp services.
One of us had 50 the other was 30amp. There was an issue with the 30 amp. With everything off but 1 AC, it tripped off the entire weekend. We have camped and been on 30 amp service many times, we just wanted 50 amp to run both AC’s.
We would have asked for assistance, but there wasn’t anyone to be found.
We never saw the owners or any of the help the first night. So much for any questions we might have had or booking a canoe for a trip in the morning.
Huge storms rolled in the first night. There wasn’t any WiFi, cell phone service, television or staff to advise any of the camper of the storms that were coming. Not safe at all!!
The next morning around 10, we saw a lady whom we think was the owner. She told us that she was only working until noon that day. So much for a canoe trip with the campground we stayed at.
We decided to go into town for the day. Very nice and hospitable city. Later that evening we returned. We purchased firewood, $15 for a large bucket. You can’t bring your own wood in, so if you want a fire, your at their mercy.
I’m not going to go into absolutely everything that was wrong there, just the important things to me.
There isn’t water hookups or septic. There is one water hydrant that you can fill your water and with. We did and what a mistake!!! Very high sulfur in the water!! It smelled and tasted terrible!!!
There was one bathroom/shower for the entire campground. It was never cleaned over the weekend. No soap and a filthy, wet hand towel.
So yourself a favor and stay somewhere that appreciates your business and wants you to come back.
DON’T STAY HERE!!

We've never been to this campground and after our first visit we won't ever return. First we called to reserve kayaks for our weekend and we're told we didn't need to reserve them that they had plenty. We questioned this, but were told they don't take reservations. Upon arriving for the weekend we find out they are all out and that we should have reserved them. We explained we called and were told we didn't need one. She didn't want to hear it and blew us off. She couldn't find our reservations and after she did she gave us our map and said here you go. We weren't sure where to go or park. Thank god our friends were there to show us where we were to park in the giant field. They have 1 shower/ toilet to accommodate the entire campground, and they charge you $2 per shower per person. You're not allowed to bring in firewood, but you can purchase a small bucket full for $15. They were rude and it was total chaos. The gal at the desk was very curt with people. We are seasoned campers and love to kayak and camp. I will never again stay at this place and neither will my friends.

Sometimes the toughest jobs can be not the ones that people really depend on for immediate help (taxi driver, firefighter, tow truck operator), but jobs dealing with vacationers. Those who show up day after day, forever, with smiles, asking the same questions, seeking fun or leisure. Tourists. Think of being a park ranger or manning a kiosk in a visitor center, answering the same questions all day. To succeed at that and not hate your job, you have to like people, have an abundance of patience and the ability to smile all day, every day, through it all. Think of those people, and imagine their hearts of gold and happy ability to help whatever nimrod shows up.
The people we met at Hutchinson's (assume they were family) to rent canoes and get shuttled didn't display that useful personality trait.
We had questions (not every member of our group knew the trip) that returned curt responses. After a brusque dropoff at the put-in, one of our group said that the driver indicated being put off by a brief departure delay (another in the group used the toilet before leaving). We had to ask about the takeout point and procedure. So it was different in that way.
That said, ours was the 5-6 hour trip, it was really enjoyable, we liked seeing the bluffs along the river, bald eagles, other birds of every kind, and very few people despite being a Sunday in July. We even heard a church choir sing "Shall We Gather at the River..." as we floated by. Very Iowa.
I can recommend the float trip, and the takeout at the Hutchinsons' place right on the river was easy. Just know ahead of time that you might not feel a love of customers. If you're OK with that, and the weather smiles on you, be ready to have a great day on the Iowa River.

we took a group of teenagers out here for a couple days of camping and canoeing. we had a blast. the campground's location is great, right next to the river and a cool bridge, and there is plenty of wide open, mowed space to spread out and have fun. at this campground you have access to a clean, modern bathroom which we thought was great! we rented a trailer-full of canoes and kayaks for the long (6-hour paddle) river trip. they were very accommodating with the shuttle and the equipment was good. the river was awesome - we spent 8 hours out there - and we felt like champions when we were done. The campground and management were relaxed and enjoyable.

Iv stayed here twice and it was good. We rented the big cabin, kayaks and got the full service deal where they truck you up river in jalopies and you float down to the camp ground. It was reasonable but a few of the tandam kayaks were pathetic.
Anyway, the third time I wanted to rent the big cabin, it was reserved and I knew the other cabins were trashy and didn't even consider them. We decided to rent a place called "Trout River Log Cabin" and called to see if Dixie would again truck us up the river so we could float down. She agreed but wouldn't give a set departure time. We showed up and it was chaos! People everywhere, kids screaming and throwing rocks etc. Dixie was sitting on the phone so I patiently waited. After a half hour, and hearing her talk about the weather and whatever else she could dream up, it was obvious she was ignoring me. I'm guessing because I didn't want to rent the moldy cabins and had my own tandem kayak and only needed a ride. I left and hired bluffton CG to truck us up the river which turned out allot better because the float from bluffton CG down to Hutchinson is boring and long, compared to the beautiful upper cliff sections starting at Chimney Rock Rd bridge in C Baker Park.
So what happened to Hutchinson camp ground? It became to big for Dixie to keep up by herself. She skimped on the damp moldy cabins, and if you don't want to rent everything from her, you are fish food. If you have a camper or tent, or can rent the large cabin you might have fun if you like crowds. But don't ever just ask for a ride and tell Dixie your staying elsewhere. Beware.. She will turn into a witch if you don't hand her your wallet!

I called the number to contact this place. A person answered with a aggravated hello and nothing more. When I asked if this was the Hutchinson Farm for canoe rentals, I got a snappy yes. I asked about tube rentals, which they advertise and was again snapped at with a thunderous no. At this point I asked about canoes, met with a sigh and more rudeness. We did not choose to put our trust in this place as we would need to know that we would be picked up, that they would have our safety in mind, and that we would be renting sound equipment--none of which I could be sure of due to this highly negative phone call with such aggressive answers.
