Previous reviews are out of date. The museum is now located in its own, new building. The collection is mostly modern and contemporary art, and some African tribal art. The presentation of the art is terrific. Paintings, sculpture, and pottery are in the same galleries. The most famous piece in this museum is a large painting by Jackson Pollock, but the museum is filled with gems. Well worth visiting.

They should add a greeter that is genuine and warm right at the door for check in. Right now, the counter looks optional but it is not and the personnel is passive aggressive about purse size and leaving your coat. They do give you a locker to leave your purse in, but no secure check in for your coat, which they also require you leave in the lobby. Front accent wall has no rope or apparent sign, but they call you out if you stand too close - but it looks like a regular wall - it is painted, but appears as a regular wall in an open table and chair space. They need clear friendly signage for all these things so that they are not verbally on your case about all these rules. Controls that are needed at art museums need to be in place, but done in a manner that is thoughtful to the guests, lest the guest will not likely return.

After a flood ten years ago, the museum has not been rebuilt. There’s a very small exhibit in another building that is free, however, the museum is not what you expect. We hope it is rebuilt soon and that wonderful works as the Jackson Pollock return soon to the city.

I recently visited the University of Iowa campus. I went to the Old Museum building just to see the building itself. It has not functioned as an art museum since the flood of 2007. Most of the collection is on long term loan and the Figge Museum in Davenport, Iowa. There is not much to see on the campus. However, there is a nice Frank Gehry designed building right across the river and worth a look. As for the collection, the famous Pollock is currently traveling, however, as mentioned before, the majority is at the Figge. I went to so the collection at the Figge. It is a nice collection, though, far from spectacular. Worth a visit. I do hope that the University of Iowa finds the funding to finally build the new museum.

Even after the significant flooding that forced our lovely UI Museum of Art to close years ago, this unique and intimate corner on campus kept our spirits and eyes enriched with ongoing majestic art displays. We are so looking forward to our new Art Museum to be built and our great treasures to return Home.

When the Iowa River flooded the University's art collection was loaned out all over the country. The pieces left in Iowa City fill up three small rooms. They are somewhat interesting but I'm not sure they were worth the elevator ride to the third floor. I wouldn't make a special effort to get there.

Background: On a Vermont to Mid West drive, we stopped over at the Iowa House Hotel in Iowa City. Located within the same building is the University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA). Before restarting our road trip, we hung around for UIMA to open. We're glad we waited!
Verdict: Though UIMA is located in a small space, it has a varied collection of objects displayed in tasteful, thought provoking ways. Many cultures were on display; don't miss the drawer of antique daggers drawn from all over the world or the modern Andrew Warhol print, Another hidden gem were two Charles Eames Compact Sofas situated outside the museum doors. We're glad we visited; it was well worth the slight delay in our travel schedule! Would definitely return for another visit if we return to Iowa City!
