Friend and I visited the Oakland Cemetery on a weekend afternoon. We parked a couple blocks away and hiked to the cemetery entrance. We walked the paths/roads as we explored the surrounding areas. There's a lot of old and interesting headstones and monuments that can be found throughout the cemetery.
Perhaps, the most iconic sight to see is the "Black Angel" grave site. There are superstitious stories concerning this Black Angel statue, which adds to the mystique. Worth taking the time to visit if you're already there or in the general area.

If you trail run, Oakland Cemetery is the place to run. Technically in town, but as soon as you cross over into the hollowed grounds instant peace and tranquility. Great place to watch the sunset as well.

A beautiful park-like cemetery that borders the wonderful Hickory Hill Park - the Black Angel statue is its highlight. Supposedly if you kiss her on midnight on Hallowe'en you are struck dead!

I visited here during a solo motorcycle journey that took me into southern MN and IA. I came here specifically to see the Dark Angel grave site. The Dark Angel is a sculpture of bronze that was created in 1913. Over the course of time, myths and legends have been created which, for better of for worse, have created an interest in the sculpture that has ultimately lead to the vandalism of the sculpture, including some knuckleheads who cut off several of the Dark Angel's fingers. As a previous reviewer noted, "legend" has it that the Dark Angel will bring death to anyone who touches it "unless they are a virgin". Well, I touched the Dark Angel sculpture in May and I'm still here. It should also be noted that I am 58 years old and very much not a virgin. I suppose one could make an argument that anyone who touches her will in fact die, simply, and for no other reason than, because everyone will die at some point in time. I don't know what that reality might do to one's belief of the virgin thing though. I feel comfortable calling BS in the legend regarding a pregnant woman standing beneath the Dark Angel's wings. But I digress. The cemetery itself is very well kept, and is quite peaceful and beautiful, as every cemetery should be. At the Dark Angel grave site, someone had left a Gothic cross and white rose at the foot of the sculpture as testament of an active interest in the sculpture. Personally, I believe the Dark Angel was created by a mother who had lost her son early in his life, and it is a very poignant symbol of that mother's grief and sadness over her loss, with absolutely no intent to create the scary, if not satanic, myths that exist today thanks to people who have nothing better to do with their lives. The sculpture is not a freak show. Rather, it is a very interesting, if not beautiful, memorial created by a mother who's ashes are buried at the foot of the sculpture. They should be visited with respect.

It is believed the at Dark Angel will bring death to anyone that touches her, unless they are a virgin. If a pregnant women walks beneath her wings it is said that the mother will lose her baby.

My daughter and I ended up taking a peaceful stroll through this cemetery during our morning walk. We appreciated the lovely and moving monuments and the interesting family names — some familiar and some new to us.

This is a lovely place. There are many very old tombstones. People often visit the Black Angel monument - a beautiful, unusual statue which has acquired mythological fame over the years.
