I took my grandchildren, ages 5, 8, and 12. Each of them was excited about the exhibits and the variety gave them all a chance to get really excited about different things. Great education without going to school!

There are 3 floors of exhibitions and the second and third floors have rooms that aren’t evident at first. The bird exhibits on the third floor are amazing! We spent almost 4 hours looking and reading. An amazing amount of effort put in by people who are no longer with us and a little history is given about them too. We decided to park on the street by the museum but had to move our car because parking is only for 2 hours and couldn’t be renewed or increased. We were able to climb the steps although there is an elevator there,

Comprises three main halls - Mammal Hall, Bird Hall & Iowa Hall. The latter is my favorite: it presents dioramas from Iowa's history (going from the very distant past to recent times). While the Giant Sloth is viewed as the star attraction, I prefer the Dunkleosteus.

I found the Natural history museum very cool and interesting
There are always classes in session on the second level, so if you're not in a hurry you can stop and listen in.

A great free museum to visit. A self guided tour involves Mammal Hall and a Hall of Birds. An interesting visit for all ages

I have visited this museum several times. Each time I am surprised at the amount of quality exhibits. If you have an extra hour before another event, stop in. Its free and well worth the few steps from the Old Capital.

Really beautiful old building in use by Iowa University jam packed full of displays of all kinds of animals. Some are skeletal or fossil remains, most are stuffed/taxidermy ... all are really amazing. From sea lions, to hummingbirds, giant prehistoric sloths, to tiny moles and mice... there are not many lifeforms on earth that you won't find represented here. Price is great (FREE) Handicap accessible but awkward (1 really old and small elevator) and very limited street parking means parking a little over a block away in the parking garage (first hour free then $1 per hour) and restrooms available only on ground level mean alot of walking and stair climbing to traverse the three floors of displays. I do recommend spending a few minutes when you first arrive to familiarize yourself with the map and where you are in relationship to everything. It was a bit confusing at first finding our way around to make sure we didn't miss anything until we figured out and finally understood the layout of the building. Another great plus is the "Trek sacks". Trek sacks are backpacks filled with books and activities for various exhibits throughout the museum. Perfect for family fun!

We visited on a Saturday morning, the displays are very nice and organized. Lots of Iowa information about rocks, and Native Americans in Iowa. Also information and displays about animals. It was a free museum. School age children would be ok here, a few hands on with Iowa rocks for them to touch, smaller children would be bored. Took us with no children about and hour and a half to visit.

This is a nice little museum for a rainy day. There’s enough interesting stuff for about an hour-long (or longer) visit. The displays are informative and educational. The giant sloth and right whale displays are especially impressive; the Native American artifacts and exhibits are well done. There’s no admission charge.
