Best hiking in Kansas. Challenging, hilly, with rock outcropping and water views. Many backpacking campsites scattered throughout the trail. Campgrounds are great. Our favorite spot to day trip or stay overnight! Two hours from Wichita.

It has pretty nice hiking and biking trails so i would totally suggest everyone to visit. Just make sure that it is not going to rain the day you visit as this will ruin everything.

I liked the one mile hiking trail. It was rated moderate but more like challenging to me. It was uphill, then down, then up again. The park rents canoes, kayaks, has a swimming beach, boat launch, and campground with shade and some pull through spaces. It’s only a couple of miles into Independence in case you need something.

The bike trails start at the north side of the dam by the spillway with several sections available for all riding capabilities. The lower section is suitable for beginners and younger riders along the river edge. Heading south from those trails to the “esses” for good technical and climbing sections - an excellent workout!

Elk City State Park has some of the best hiking and biking trails in Kansas. There are many great trails with varying degrees of difficulty and length which can accommodate families with young children and elderly as well as extremely fit hikers who want a challenge and amazing scenery. Never crowded and always beautiful. The Park is just a couple of miles northwest of Independence which has a historic downtown and quaint little shops.

Excellent Camping and Fishing location. Just north of Independence with easy driving there from town. Well marked campsites and great place to just relax. Boat ramp on site and was told the fishing was great. Enjoyed the peace and quiet. Only bad comment would be choose your campsite well as it can be a bit windy a times.

Very enjoyable hiking along the Elk River Trail. We traveled on the north side of the lake for 3 hours. The terrain is rocky and fun to navigate. You get to see some great limestone bluffs and boulders along the way and peeks at the Elk City Lake

We were fortunate to have dry weather and a dry trail. The high for the day, temperature wise, was in the low 70s today. We worked up a sweat as you are truly in the woods which cuts down the wind. If there were recent rains, I could see where the trail might have a few slick spots.

We really enjoyed this hike - so different from other parts of Kansas to hike:-)

The trail was a really pretty getaway and I enjoyed the terrain. It made for an eventful hike, but you should be weary of rain because it can flood and muddy the trail.

I grew up in Independence and have been a fan of Elk City State Park for many, many years. The name "Elk City" eludes me as the dam is just a few short miles from Independence. The Elk River dam on the Elk River has been a god send to thousands of people below the dam from preventing the flooding of their homes, property, and the destruction of fields and crops. That was the intent of building the reservoir. The by product of the dam is obviously a great opportunity of providing recreational opportunities. Elk City State Park is an excellent, and under utilized, playground for families and friends. The lake is beautiful and quite large. Boaters have miles of unimpeded stretches of throwing the accelerator wide open and "running down the lake" without much traffic. It's a great lake for skiers...and yes, fisherman. The lake has many cats, bass, crappie, bluegills, perch, and yes, even some walleye. The camping and RV areas are very well taken care of. The hiking around the area is incredible...from easy...to hard...to, "is this really Kansas!" The dam is is a structure between two very large hills. The hill on the the East side of the dam is called "Table Mound." Table Mound is a unique and very large limestone "hill." The terrain of Table Mound is very rugged. There are many trails on and around Table Mound. On the East side of Table Mound there is the haunted community of Le Hunt. Le Hunt was a small "Company Town" that was the home of a cement plant. The town Marshal was, the silent movie star, Tom Mix. Now overgrown by bushes and trees the cement plant and the community of Le Hunt are very worthy of exploring...you might even see a ghost or three (one being the dog of Tom Mix!). Do yourself a favor and discover a lake and and an area totally worthy and basically...undiscovered...Elk City State Park...just about three miles West of Independence...
