I did a day trip to Lawrence from Kansas City with a friend. We did two museums and lunch there on KU Campus. Recommend parking at KU Union. Spencer is just down the hill from KU Union. This was our afternoon trip (after lunch). Spencer as of July only has the main gallery open as they are working in setting up another exhibit, so other galleries were closed. But that did not stop our enjoyment of the exhibit that was available. I do look forward to a future visit when they open up the other galleries. FYI there is no cost to this museum but they encourage a donation (of your choice)

The museum is under going major construction so the collection of art and artifacts is limited. It is still a place that should be visited when in Lawrence. They have some extremely interesting pieces.

Located on KU campus. Parking is a nightmare if you don't want to have to pay. KU is apparently unaware of a thing called hospitality for visitors. And half of the museum was closed for repairs. But I did get to see some nice art.

The Spencer is a small museum on a large university campus. As might be expected at an academic institution the collection is not huge and does not have a particular focus. However, the presentation of the collection takes this into account and presents its holdings more as a assemblage of curios than as a more traditional series of rooms each devoted to a particular era or style of art.
I enjoyed our stay and commend it to anyone who happens to be in or near Lawrence. If you are in Kansas City it is probably worth the short drive over to see it as it is an interesting contrast to the much larger and far more traditionally presented collection at the Nelson Art Gallery in Kansas City Mo.

The Spencer Museum of Art is a real jewel in the midwest. This is a world-class art museum and one that is worth taking the time to see. The Spencer has art from most time periods and all are first-rate works. In addition, they always have traveling exhibits that are really worth seeing.They recently renovated the facility and it is better than ever.
I would highly recommend you visit if you haven't!

We loved this rather small but wonderfully displayed art in the spencer and spent a couple of hours happily enjoying art from ancient to modern, with a very nice selection of smaller artifacts and jewelry, including exquisite Russian treasure made by Fabrege. Well done! As a bonus, admission is free.

I am not an art aficionado by any means, so a lot of the art is lost on me. BUT, it was easy to find, the welcome staff was very friendly and it was laid out well. There was something for everyone to enjoy.

The main attraction is that you can see a variety of excellent art from throughout the world without spending a day or two to see it all. By comparison, it is small enough to see it all in one day. However, you will have to walk fast and not linger to see it all in less than an hour or two. It is indeed rare art of the quality that you see in larger museums, just not so much of it. It displays some area artist's work, like Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Birger Sandzen alongside European masters. It includes a considerable plethora of 3-D art as well. There is no admission charge, just a jar for donations. The paid parking garage is across the street (multilevel). It is next to the K.U. Student Union and Memorial Stadium. It would be worth your time to stroll down Memorial Drive to the Campanile that plays live organ/bell music. You will be on the east side of the main campus. Allen Fieldhouse where basketball legends have been made is a 15-minute walk to the southwest.

Which coffee shop on KU campus is the closest to the museum? Are there any restaurants on campus where a group of 20 could eat?

I agree with what the other person answered as to the Union (right across the street with numerous dining options) and The Oread being just up the hill with several really good options. They are starting major renovations to the Spencer so it will be closed for a period of time. Check out their website for specifics. The Natural History museum is great. It is right next to the Union. They are in the process of renovating the dioramas, but as far as I know the museum itself is open. Go to ku.edu for access to both museums' websites.
