Very Conflicted Review

My boyfriend and I stayed one night at the B&B and did the evening and morning tours at Hedrick's the night of July 31st. I'll start off with the positives: I booked the room several months in advance and had no issues - the woman who took care of my reservation on the phone was very friendly. We arrived before the 7pm evening tour and were very warmly greeted by Kristy, who showed us around the bed and breakfast building and our room and explained the tour/activities schedule (which matched up exactly with the email itinerary I received). I loved the bed and breakfast building - there is a pool table downstairs, a living room area upstairs with a TV (no TVs in the rooms) and games, a viewing area located on the second floor that looks onto the indoor portion of the kangaroo area, a large kitchen area with ping pong and foosball tables, and outdoor wraparound balconies on the second floor that look out over several of the animal enclosures. I really enjoyed stepping outside really quick to watch the animals from above. You're right above the kangaroo enclosure and they're very entertaining to watch. We had the Ostrich Room, which is their luxury room for adults only (I'm assuming because it's the only room with a hot tub). And the hot tub is amazing - it was very soothing after a long day of driving. Just be aware that there are several rules pertaining to the use of the hot tub - you have to take a shower before using it, etc. (The shower is just a stand-in shower). Overall, I was very happy with the room and the whole building. Kristy led the 7pm tour, which was just for the bed and breakfast guests. There was only one other family staying at the B&B that night so I really enjoyed the small group. We just visited the giraffes and kangaroos but we got to feed both. Kristy gave us each a few pieces of food for both animal groups. We stood outside the giraffe enclosure and they came over and ate out of our hands. For the kangaroos we got to actually go inside their enclosure to approach, feed, and pet them. One of them had a baby joey inside her pouch (be aware you're not allowed to touch the joey or the mother will probably reject it and kick it out of her pouch). I had never seen a joey in the pouch in real life before so that was pretty cool. I really enjoyed getting to pet and feed giraffes and kangaroos! Kristy also got out a 3 month old African porcupine that we were allowed to pet. Kristy also put out punch and iced tea as well as freshly made cookies after the tour, which was very appreciated. The cookies were super warm and tasty. In the morning, Kristy made breakfast, which was also very good. At 9am we had a longer tour with a larger group and got to meet and pet more of the animals. Kristy was absolutely amazing! She was very friendly and informative and you can tell she really loves all of the animals.

Now for the negative part: Several of the enclosures were pretty iffy. There were several large enclosures with plenty of grass and space but there were several near the barn that seemed quite small and very dirty. I don't claim to be an animal expert so I don't know how the animals feel but as a customer, I was kind of grossed out. The giraffe enclosure seemed relatively small for the number of giraffes in it and it was all muddy, mixed pretty well no doubt with their feces. It did smell bad and I when I went out on my own I saw them running around they were just running in and splashing this mix of mud and feces around. The guide was telling us at one point about how when giraffes give birth they just drop the baby on the ground and all I could think of was how sad that baby would be if they just plopped down into a mix of mud and feces. The conditions were the same in the pens attached to the barn, which housed several more exotic hoofed animals. Their enclosures seemed a little small and the ground was also covered in wet mud mixed with feces. I was actually afraid to pet a lot of the animals because they seemed to have some of that mixture on their coats - I'm sure they've been rolling around it in. I was able to find areas that seemed free of the mixture but I was very wary. One enclosure attached to the barn housed several young exotic cow calves and there were flies and other, smaller flying insects absolutely everywhere. There were a ton of flies even in their feed bowl. It smelled so bad in the pens in and around the barn area that I actually couldn't wait to leave. Even if the animals are okay with these conditions, again, as a customer - it just looked really bad to me and smelled really bad. I really hope that we just came at a bad time, like before a major cleaning or something. If someone from Hedrick's reads this review - please take into consideration adding some grass or some other greenery, making better drainage systems, and putting more effort into the maintenance and cleaning of the enclosures. Maybe even some sticky fly strips/traps put up around some of the really bad areas.

I really wish I could've enjoyed this more because there were a lot of parts that I loved but I was just simply overwhelmed by how depressing and dirty some of the enclosures looked and smelled. I would still encourage people to visit though because hopefully the money that they bring in will go to improving the enclosures for the giraffes and the other barn animals.

Hedricks is very family-friendly.
If you are looking for a 5* B&B don't come unless you bring shampoo, bar soap, hairdryer and such. Rooms are cutely themed-adorned.
If you want to get up-close and friendly (and feed) kangaroos and giraffes this is your place. The morning tour is very informative and educational and fun and diverse. There are many varied animals to view--black peacocks, white peacocks, camels, ostrich and so many more. At this time of year there are young ones from days to weeks old. Unique and good place. Camel rides are fun and the pony rides for those up to 65 pounds are also available.

Fun! Petting Zoo. Awesome! Eccentric! Pretty Great! Interactive! An Emu bit me, it was great! Amazing! Educational! Fluffy animals. Inspirational. Exotic. Pretty Lit Fam! Informative!

Our group of 7 ranged in age from 8-77. The above were responses from the group when asked what they thought.

We had heard about Hedrick's and decided to stop when we were in the area. I was expecting a zoo like atmosphere with a little petting zoo. The entire tour was hands-on and interactive. WOW!

Giraffes, Camels, Zebras, Ostriches, Emus, Kangaroos, Porcupine, Donkeys, Alpacas, Elk, Horses, Yacks, Peacocks, and many more.
Most of their exotic animals are bred and born on the farm. Animals are sometimes employed by Rockettes Christmas show, many Nativity Scenes, many State Fairs, some Rodeos, and some Petting Zoos.
We learned about this place from talking to another family at the hotel pool.
You have to have a reservation to visit, but they are very accommodating. Next time we are in the area we will be staying at their Bed & Breakfast. B&B guests get lots of tours & animal rides included in their stay.

A bit of Africa in Kansas
เม.ย. ค.ศ. 2016 • ครอบครัว
We came for a school field trip. We had a very knowledgeable tour guide who took us around to see and pet and feed a variety of animals. They have camels, including the rare white camels, zebras, emu, ostrich, giraffe and much more. Most the animals are very friendly and we were allowed to walk in the pen with the many different types of calves and in the kangaroo area. A fun couple hours for a great price.

There is a bed and breakfast also but we did not stay up. But we might just have to come back and do that.

All in all everyone had a great time and learned a lot.

Camels to Ostrich to Kangaroo to Giraffes
ก.ค. ค.ศ. 2015
You can take a tour here that lasts an hour or more seeing lots of animals you may not have heard of. Part of the tour is seeing, feeding, and learning about the animals. Feed the giraffes, kangaroos or ride the camel or pony. The guide was very knowledgeable and informative. One can also stay here in the bed and breakfast, which we highly recommend. Fun for kids and grandparents alike. Kathy was particularly helpful and attentive to our needs. Hedrick's supplies animals to state fairs. Fun and educational place. Don't look at this as a zoo; it is different.

Fantastic Time Bed & Breakfast - exotic animals abound
ต.ค. ค.ศ. 2015 • ครอบครัว
The bed and breakfast is wonderful. The balcony surrounds the building and you can view the land full of exotic animals. We watched a turkey chase ostridges baby zebras at play, watch the giraffs. The animals are bottle fed and used to people so you can feed the girraff and kangaroos. The Bed and Breakfast has glass windows where you can watch the kangaroos in the barn. Ride a camel or pony, see wonderful animals. If you pet the large ones, be mindful as they like to press against the bars, so make sure your hand is straight and not up so you don't get smashed! It was a great time. All ages will love this, even just couples.
