Visited on a Friday with 3 kids excited to take a stagecoach ride only to learn that stagecoach rides are currently only offered to the public on Saturdays. That certainly hadn’t been advertised on the website or the passport to adventure booklet. We arrived at 1 in the afternoon and the only demonstrations were ones offered to school groups. Most of the farm animals were inside locked barns. Our kids aged 5,8 and 11 enjoyed exploring the covered wagons for a little while and then grew bored.

Mahaffie.org/visit lists the living history schedule according to the time of year in which it occurs. In September and October living history is offered on Saturdays only. The reduced admission for non-living history days allows visitors to explore the site and museum exhibits. Our animals are in outdoor pens, except occasionally for the chickens, which may choose to go inside their coops. All the animals are free to approach the fences to interact with visitors if they choose to do so. We hope you will come back during living history demonstrations to meet the site guides and ride on the stagecoach next season.

Very cool historic property. Did the stagecoach ride and watched the blacksmith demo as well as toured the house and museum. Very interesting.

I had a wonderful experience today! The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site is exceptional. I live in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area, but my son and his family live in Olathe, Ks. My wife and I have been taking care of two of our grandchildren this week while our son and his wife have been on vacation. Our grand daughters first grade class did a field trip to the Mahaffie Historic Site today, My wife and I asked the school if we could go on the fieldtrip with our grand daughter. They said "sure." I'm glad they did. Visiting and touring the site is very immersive and beautifully described tour by the Mahaffie Historic volunteer staff. They literally brought to life how the settlers, and pioneers moving westward on the Santa Fe Trail in the 1860's lived, and why. The children were shown actual living conditions that existed, and given the opportunity to try some of skills needed to carry out those "chores." It was a a hard life, but a tolerable life. I loved the Mahaffie Historic Site tour, as well as going through the on site museum.

We were in town for the Oz Marathon. Unsure what to do in Olathe, KS, we found this gem. The history of how the area was settled during western expansion is very interesting and perfectly displayed at the Mahaffie’s. From seeing a blacksmith, sheep sheering, and thread spinning. This was a great experience and helped connect me to the area. Definitely worth the visit!

Great historical site, perfect if you have a couple of hours and want to learn something about 19th century history. The day was really hot, but we enjoyed our visit very much. They have a variety of farm animals on-site, lots of activities for kids, and have daily stagecoach rides, so don't miss one of those! The main house is a real gem, a great example of 1860s architecture.
If you're in the Kansas City area, Mahaffie is definitely worth a visit.

We had a nice time. If you have kids this would be great. There are chickens, pigs goats and horses. They have a blacksmith shop and tour guides. The house or stop was interesting, but if you visit a lot of old houses, nothing extraordinary. The painted floor was kinda cool.

Very nice. A great place to learn about an earlier life in Olathe and how important Olathe was to the development of the WEST.
Take your time to check out the museum and read the Captions of the displays.
Tour the house and barn areas as well.

Great little history museum the staff are very knowledgeable and willing to talk to you. The stagecoach ride is a must as well as the barn and blacksmith shop. Great place for kids to learn about history.

Children are amazed to learn what daily chores were like on the farm. From bringing corn and feeding chickens, slopping hogs, pulling weeds, beating rugs, fetching buckets of water or emptying pans, washing and starching clothes, then hanging them today, and pumping the billows for a blacksmith! All performed by today’s visitors. Learning about chamber pots was just that. Period clothing for re enactments, and stagecoach rides were also part of the fun. A definite ‘hidden gem’ only minutes from Kansas City.

Just moved to KC and while staying in the hotel we took a drive to explore our new area. Came across this little gem , didn’t know what to expect but were really surprised how well everything was set up , life demonstrations from the era took a stagecoach ride around the grounds. Very friendly staff and knowledgeable about the era. Nice little place to learn about the history, and how stuff was done back then . Glad we stopped , even our teenager was impressed.....can recommend

Thank you for your inquiry. Our horses are used primarily for stagecoach rides and farm work, so we do not offer riding lessons at this time. We are happy to some names of stables from our livestock manager if that will help. Please let me know, thanks for your patience.
