A Park in the City

A lovely habitat to have in the city.

We got off to a bad start as we couldn’t find the visitor center due to poor signage or us being blind, not sure which.

We were then given a map in black and white, with four coloured trails … maybe the colour printer was broken.

For us there was far too much concrete and asphalt on the trails. The side paths to nowhere were far more interesting, especially through the woodland floor.

We saw amazing turtles, heron, butterflies, different jumping fish, cardinals and all sorts of other birds we couldn’t identify.

The replanted prairie was great and did remind us of our trips to the real ‘wild west’.

Great birding

Was here on a day they were doing a special event, so had to enter through a secondary entrance. Overall this place had amazing trails, many of which seem to be accessible. Lots of wooden bridges allow you to cross marshes and the many creeks which seem to run through here. There were a lot of birds, and I noticed several groups of birders making unusual sightings.

Glad we didn’t miss it

Almost missed the turn off glad we didn’t. Looking out of the landscape it was really interesting to see what the landscape looked like years ago. So glad they are restoring and trying to preserve some of our history. The tour of the barn and the house was very interesting hard to believe the house was built for $25,000.

I enjoyed walking through this nature center even though it was very hot. We saw turtles and fish but not much out.

Well done indoor and outdoor experience of the Great Plains

They have an outdoor area with a number of different paved trail loops. We went in the morning when it was still cool. The inside has a small indoor museum that covers the wildlife of the great planes. The staff is friendly and helpful. They also have a small gift shop. I was able to purchase a National Park Pass in the gift shop.

Disappointed- Could not find it!!!

Tried to visit the indoor exhibits on a very cold day. First, there was no sign telling you to turn right from the connecting road off of Rt 96. So had to make a u-turn after missing that.
Then, upon entering the parking lot it says the Center is too the left, but there is nothing there except parking and trail entrances. Drove all the way around that, then saw a big building to the right of the entrance. But, the signs all said “permits & licenses” and officials or authorized parking only. So we gave up and went to cow town. If they want tourists they really need to post signs for finding where it is!!!

Great walking trail!

This place is a no brainer if you want to get out of the city buildings and get some nature in!. Walking and running allowed. Lots of space and different trails. They also have fishing at some of the lakes on the property.

Peaceful Setting

Nice cement walking trails of various lengths. It is a peaceful setting in the midst of the city. Because of covid there is not much happening inside the nature center building other than the aquarium. Gift shop is also closed.

Side trails in the woods!

We've been going here for several years to walk the peaceful trails, watch the turtles and waterfowl in the ponds, and take pictures of the trees and an occasional deer. We just recently discovered that there are tons of side trails all throughout the woods! I'm not sure how we've missed them all these years, but the few we tried recently added a whole new dimension to the park!

Nature trails and more

We had a great day hiking the trails (over 2 miles or shorter if desired) and visiting the gift shop. The fall foliage was beautiful and there were several deer and lots of birds. We enjoyed the paved paths and the labeling of many species of foliage. Just beautiful and serene.
