Just finished a workshop at Santa Clara with Hector Astroga as guide. The birds were awesome as usual especially the Crested Caracara at the morning raptor blind. This was my second time there and it did not disappoint. From the guest house to the food and Hectors creative setups at the blinds. Top to bottom everything was great.

Spent 3 1/2 days in the company of 2 other photographers with the ranch manager photographing Rio Grande valley birds and mammals. After the first 3 1/2 days I was alowed to spend the remaining 3 days with a friend on the ranch preparing our own food. The food was superb, rooms, dinning and living area were very nice.
The ground level blinds are exceptional (the best I have ever used) and perch and feeder setups worked perfectly.
Wildlife was exceptional with a beautiful bobcat on the first morning. I would highly recommend a workshop at the ranch for any wildlife photographer.

Amazing spot for nature photogs, specially if your main target has feathers!... Blinds at eye level, have awesome view to the ponds and comfortable seats.
Loads of birds in May. However, triple loads if you can bare the extreme heat of June!... so good, it is actually hard to decide what you are shooting.
Many species and many individual with great specialties like Long-billed Thrasher, Audobon's Oriole, and more. Cool birds like Painted Bunting or Greater Roadrunner become easy there.
You can also count with some cool mammals like Striped Ground Squirrel, 6 banded Armadillo, rabbits, dears and even White-collared Peccary during the hottest times... If really lucky, a Bobcat might delight your day as well.
They have 4 blinds to go for during the day and 2 more, elevated and specifically design for super cool raptor -in flight-shooting!... 1 has good light in the morning and 1 has good light during the late afternoon.
The guesthouse is pretty comfortable, feels new and cozy. Full laundry can be done in a day by yourself and kitchen is well equipped. Beds and bathrooms are pretty small, but ok and clean.
If 4 or more in your party, you can even arrange for a lady to cook all meals for you.
The first time you visit, you must hire a guide, but they are worth every penny!... We had Hector, who is an avid pro photographer and a pretty friendly-knowledgeable fellow.

Excellent opportunities for wildlife photography. Nice multi-room lodge to house several guests. Wildlife blinds are very nicely built 1/2 undergound bunkers. Ponds are raised for eye level photos. Birds, small animals and deer are plenty. Can rotate from blind to blind for am or pm photo shoots. Even have a raptor blind. Highly recommend this place.

I recently spent two days and three nights at the Santa Clara Ranch. The Ranch is set up primarily for photographers and birders. Since this was my first visit, I was required to hire a guide. I also stayed at the Guesthouse on the Ranch during my stay.
My guide went above and beyond the call of duty. I expected him to get me set up in the blind and perhaps share some information about the local wildlife. Instead, things started off by my guide meeting me at a convenient location so that I could follow him to the Ranch so that I wouldn't have any trouble finding the remote location. Then, my guide spent the next couple of days driving me to the blinds, setting up perches for the birds, helping me get set up, shooting the entire time with me...he was basically a guide 24/7!
The Guesthouse was surprisingly comfortable for being in such a remote location. The diversity of wildlife is amazing...and the guide helps to ensure that they will be approaching the water holes so they can be photographed. In my short time there during the off-season, I saw at least 15 different types of birds...including some raptors.
The price is reasonable considering the guide, the lodging and the photography opportunities. I highly recommend it for any photographers who are interested in captring images of animals in the wild.

Is the green jay migratory or a year round vistor. Are non photographers welcome? Saw you on the morning show.

The Green Jay is a year round resident here in deep South Texas. Here at the ranch it is our most numerous bird.

When is the best time to visit this amazing bird sanctuary? Just curious after seeing the spot on cbs Sunday morning. What are the programs available, and costs? Thanks.
