The stalactites and stalagmites were incredible to see! We were put on a tour last second and our guide didn’t seem to happy about that based on her comments and energy. But the experience was amazing, we loved walking through the cavern and learning about the formations.

Our tour guide Ayden was very knowledgeable and great with kids. He made our tour personable and was patient and even created an impromptu scavenger hunt to keep our girls entertained. Their was so much to explore, a gift shops with reasonable prices and unique souvenirs. We had lunch just up the road at Miss Betty's which we highly recommend. Great food and delicious pies!

We were planning on heading to a couple rock shops and saw Diamond Caverns nearby on the map. I'm glad we stopped. The tour was a nice amount of time, and the cave is full of formations. Courtney was a really good guide. She answered questions, waited for everyone to tackle the stairs at their own pace, and shared info about the cave from her own personal experiences. If you're in town for caving, it's a great one to visit.

Great find! Glad we went. We didn’t get tickets to Mammoth today so we called Diamond and we’re able to get on a tour-they have a great set up! All staff at the gift shop were very nice and helpful(our tour guide was not, and seemed annoyed to be with our group and just wanted to be done…maybe a bad day). The cave was amazing, way better than I would’ve thought and definitely worth it. If you don’t get Mammoth tickets, this place is a great option, or maybe a great option for you anyways! Took a 4 and 5 yo and they did great!

Our family visited this cave after all tours for Mammoth Cave were full. And glad we did. It was a great visit. Settled in the Mammoth National Park, this was a great alternative to Mammoth. While not as large, it was still packed with a ton of education and history. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable of the cave's history and the surrounding area. Those who visit the tour should be advised that it is about an hour long and requires a lot of up-and-down steps. Also, a word of caution for those who may be afraid of heights (like me) the stair rails are small, with no wall barriers, so you will be looking straight down from quite a height when going up and down. I could get through it with a lot of deep breaths, but those who are timid about heights should be prepared. This is also good awareness for those with little children who may tour. Little children should likely be carried or, at minimum, have hands held. It is a cave, as the potential of little children slipping and falling from a great height is a real possibility if parents are watching.

We had already seen Mammoth Cave, so this time through Kentucky we decided to see another cave. We tried to visit Lost River Cave, but they required reservations. So we went to Diamond Caverns.
Diamond Caverns is located near Mammoth Cave (and I think is inside or under the park). Our guide was John (with a beard, he said to mention :-) ) and he was great! Very informative and made sure we knew about the history, the formations, and where the low spots and "scalping rocks" were so we didn't bump our heads.
The cavern has many different types of formations: stalactites, stalagmites, flow stone, draperies, columns, popcorn. It is also an active system, so the formations are still growing. It can be a bit wet, as well, since water is dripping/flowing through the cave.
We also saw some wildlife: cave beetles and cave crickets, and 1 cave centipede. There are also blind fish deeper in the cave, but that section isn't open to the public. The temperature wasn't as cold as other caves. Maybe in the mid 60s, but very humid. No jacket necessary.
Lots of fun.

Beatiful formations.. Went during the middle of the week early afternoon our group consisted of just two couples. Which made it easy to hear and converse with our guide Courtney. She did an awesome job explaining the history and backstory to the Diamond Caverns also the federal law now in place to preserve and protect cave system.

Came over from Eky. Couldn’t get a ticket for Mammoth Cave. Ask locals where should we go. All said diamond cavern. Glad we did! We had a blast. Madison our guide was super nice and patient with the children and parents on trip. So I say pee on Mammoth cave. A private owner hiring good people.

This is one of the few caves that allow all the flash photography your camera card will allow.
And yes…there is a lot to see and photograph. Our guide was informative, knowledgeable and witty. Highly recommend.

What age kids do you recommend on tour ?

It depends on the child. We have 3 year olds for example who do great on the tour with help from their parents on our steep steps. People carry children in the front and make it through fine. We have handrails throughout the cave. With 350 stair steps throughout the whole tour. We are rated strenuous with a 1/2 mile walk. So really depends the child, how many kids vs adults and how well they can walk on their own.

How strenuous is the tour through Diamond Caverns? Is it possible to complete a 9 am tour and go back to mammoth to do the 10:30 tour?

Our tour lasted about 35-40 minutes. It all really depends on how many people are in your group. We had a good size group of about 14-16 people. Plus it was raining pretty good outside which in turn made everything in the cave slippery and wet so had to slow down in a few spots. But we had a blast.
We are traveling with a small dog. Are we able to bring him on the tour with us?

Yes, due to the nature of caves you are required to be guided. It is a one hour historic tour. This is to help preserve the cavern and to keep visitors safe and on trail. Hope this helps!

Our host at the Rock Cabin camping had them- a standard booklet filled with local businesses and promotions. You can probably find them near the door at most stores, the local market or gas station. I also saw them at Mammoth Cave in the main lobby.

Yes we are open daily in November 10am-4pm except for Thanksgiving Day. We do run a set tour schedule at 11am, 12:30pm, 2pm and 4pm in the Central Time Zone. We recommend you're here 10-15 minutes before the tour to get tickets, change shoes, bathrooms, etc.
