I’ve been several times and even lodged on the ship overnight. I love it every time. Kids love it as well! They have a nice indoor museum and gift shop too

We are very fortunate to be able to tour ships that have served our country. Having served in the Army, Naval ships fascinate me and this one is no exception.
It is not among the largest so every inch of space serves a very important purpose.
If you are unable to tour this vessel you can go on-line and get a very good virtual tour.

If my review is useful, please give me a "thumbs up" or “helpful” vote.
1. Bottom Line Up Front/frame of reference for my remarks. This was my second visit (my last was in December 2020). I am a retired Marine Corps Infantry Officer, history buff and a tour guide aboard another museum ship; as such, I have high expectations of military museums; I have visited over 30 in the United States. The museum contains a great deal of very well-maintained/restored/re-furbished items. The ship is in good condition and many areas are available for visitors to either enter or view (through plexiglass partitions). This was my first visit to this ship since I became a certified tour guide on another ship so my perspective is somewhat different from other visitors.
2. Namesake. The ship is named in behalf of Rear Admiral Isaac Kidd, killed in action aboard the USS Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
3. Details of ship
3.a. This ship is DD-661 (a Fletcher class Destroyer). She was the first ship to be named USS Kidd.
3.b. DDG 993 (Kidd Class Destroyer). In service 1981-1998.
3.c. DDG 100 (Arleigh Burke Destroyer). 2007-currently in service.
3.d. Crew. 300 +. When making your way through the ship, bear in mind the cramped quarters for this many Sailors.
4. History
4.a. Laid Down (construction began). 16 October 1942.
4.b. Commissioned. 23 April 1943.
4.c. Active in the World War II Pacific Theater of Operations.
4.d. April 1945. Sustained damage from a kamikaze during the Battle of Okinawa; killing 38 and injuring 55.
4.e. De-commissioned. 10 December 1946.
4.f. Recommissioned. 28 March 1951.
4.g. Active in the Korean War.
4.h. Decommissioned. 19 June 1964
4.i. Stricken. 1 December 1974
4.j. Arrived Baton Rouge, Louisiana. 23 May 1982.
5. Armament
5.a. Main Battery. 5 x 5" 38 caliber dual purpose guns. Used for: engaging other ships, bombarding shore fortifications and anti-aircraft. The projectiles weighed approximately 55 lbs and were propelled by approximately 15 lbs of powder. They had a range of 10 miles against surface targets and 37,000 ft for aircraft.
5.b. Primary Anti-aircraft weapons. 10 x 40mm Bofors in 5 x dual gun mounts.
5.c. Secondary Anti-aircraft weapons. 12 x 20mm Oerlikon cannons in double and single mounts.
5.d. Depth Charge racks. 2 on stern.
5.e. Depth Charge projectors (K-guns). 6 amidships.
5.f. Torpedo Tubes. 10.
6. Details of my visit
6.a. Date & Time. Saturday 31 December 2022 – morning through afternoon.
6b. Other patrons. The museum/ship was relatively crowded (most groups consisted of either couples or couples with children).
6.c. Length of visit. I spent approximately 1 hour in the museum and 1 hour aboard the ship. As this was my second visit, I did not read many of the informative placards. Visitors should add at least another 30 minutes to 1 hour in order to read more of the placards.
7. Location. I plugged the address in to my iPhone and it took me directly there.
8. Access
8.a. Passenger vehicles. There a are approximately 8 free parking spaces directly in front of the museum. There are additional free parking spaces on the street and paid parking spaces in a nearby parking garage.
8.b. Buses and RVs. I do not estimate that this attraction is accessible by large vehicles.
9. Admission. Check the museum’s website. Be aware of how much it costs to maintain and improve an attraction of this magnitude.
10. Hours of operation. Check the museum’s website for current information.
11. Handicap access. Both floors of the museum are accessible via elevator. The ship’s main deck is easily accessible. The above and below decks of the ship are accessible only by climbing up and down quite a few steep/narrow ladderwells (staircases).
12. Child friendliness. The museum is child-friendly but I did not see any interactive/hands-on exhibits. The ship is safe for children but I would caution parents that if they intend on negotiating ladderwells (staircases) to the superstructure (above) or belowdecks, it is unsafe to carry children. A good rule of thumb on ships is to maintain three points of contact (both hands on the handrails and one foot on the steps at a time) when negotiating stairs.
13. Permissions/prohibitions
13.a. Weapons. I do not recall seeing any prohibitive placards; I recommend checking their website or calling.
13.b. Photography. Photography is permitted.
13.c. Pets and service animals. I would imagine that legitimate service animals are permitted; I do not know about pets.
13.d. Food and drinks. I did not see any prohibitive signs but I would imagine that food and drinks are not permitted but bottled water should be permitted.
14. Type/nature of visit. Visitors may conduct un-guided tours; I do not know if guided tours are available; consider calling the museum or checking their website. On the day of my visit, the museum’s Executive Director (retired Navy Officer) was aboard the ship and provided a wealth of information.
15. Layout of the museum
15.a. Quite a few (approximately 25) scale models of other ships.
15.b. Display cases highlighting Louisiana veterans: photographs, biography, uniform items, etc.
16. Layout of ship (not all inclusive)
16.a. Enlisted crew’s quarters (walk through)
16.b. Chief Petty Officers’ quarters (walk through)
16.c. Officers’ Staterooms (view through plexiglass).
16.d. Captain’s at-sea and in-port cabins (view through plexiglass).
16.e. Galley and mess-decks (eating area).
16.f. Pilot House (bridge).
16.g. 5” gun turret (able to enter).
16.h. 5” gun upper ammunition handling room (walk through).
17. Amenities.
17.a. Restrooms. Restrooms are available in the museum but not aboard the ship.
17.b. Water fountains. Water fountains are available in the museum but not aboard the ship.
17.c. Climate control. The museum is climate-controlled; the ship is not.
17.d. Food & beverages. A very limited amount of bottled drinks/water are available at the admission desk.
17.e. Gift shop. The museum has a medium-size gift shop that has items oriented primarily toward children.
18. Conclusion. This attraction is well worth a visit if you are in the area and worth a special/day trip (especially when coupled with a visit to the Capitol Park Louisiana State Museum).

1st only 1 handicap parking spot. So prepare to walk or roll a distance. People were very friendly. Nice indoor museum. Not super large but neither is the ship. Access to a lot of areas on the ship was fun. Overall a good experience, but again parking for handicapped veterans not so good.

Staff invites learners of all ages to interact with their surroundings. Cannot wait to host a birthday party or a get together for our son and his cousins here. Many hands on activities to permit visitors to "get the feel" of what marine goers experienced.

This is one of the smaller navy ships, but needs better upkeep. There is a lot of rust and you have o be a bit careful so as not to hurt yourself. Could use some more staff and volunteers to assist and educate guests.

The first part of this location is an indoor museum. This is a good museum for those with military backgrounds and those who enjoy learning and spending time reading about military history and different battleships. I brought my 5 year old son which was not a good idea. My wife had no interest so she didn't join our excursion. I would have liked to spend more time reading, but he had no interest in anything, not that I blame him.
The second part is where you go out to the ship itself. There is supposed to be someone there who takes your ticket and tells you where to go, but my son and I walked up and didn't know where to start, so we incorrectly started at the last spot with the toilets. We eventually retraced our steps and made it through the small openings, ladders, holes, etc., but he also got bored with this experience.
It is enjoyable and educational if you're on your own and don't have anyone such as a significant other or child(ren) who aren't really into this stuff, otherwise it's just another quick checkmark off the Baton Rouge to do list.

If you are in the area or passing thru, this is worth a stop— The have an indoor museum and displays are informative— The walk thru the ship was interesting— Seeing how the men who served our country lived will give you lots to think about and be thankful for— The staff and volunteers onboard were very knowledgeable and friendly, one even offered to take some photos for us
