We had heard that this was the best escape room in the world and the production value lived up to the hype. We did 4 rooms, spellbound, cutthroat cavern, tomb of Anubis, and the asylum. We’ve done about 35 rooms before these in Houston, New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Orlando, and these were no question the highest quality ones.

The reason for the 4 stars rather than 5 was that despite Maddy being an excellent game master and Emma being solid, Steven was really rough. I know he’s newer, but he seemed very disinterested from the get go, and we had multiple times where we asked loudly for a clue and he simply didn’t respond, or only did so after a full minute or two had passed. We failed to escape by 1 puzzle that we had solved, but hasn’t put the code in all the way so to lose those minutes waiting for a clue can be a real bummer.

Also for tomb of Anubis there were a couple puzzles that we felt were far too ambiguous, even after knowing the answer. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the colors need to be clearer.

Also for Tomb we were there all together 4 minutes after our start time. We had previously done two rooms the day before and I told our game master this, but she still told us they had to show us the video we already had seen and deducted 5 minutes from our total time which we didn’t appreciate. I understand we would force the group behind us to wait, but we easily could’ve done a condensed introduction, done the full 60 minutes, and it would’ve taken less time. We’ve been late to a couple before over the 35+ rooms we’ve done and never had our time cut in the past.

All in all our service was good, especially from maddy and a guy who’s name I didn’t catch that was skinnier and had a beard+beanie. However those 3 things did leave a bit of a bad taste in our mouth.

13th Gate Escape is like a pilgrimage for escape room enthusiasts, and I had always heard it was well worth traveling to come here. This Thanksgiving holiday, I was finally able to make it down to Baton Rouge and play five of the seven current games, and I was so impressed. The escape rooms here are magnificent works of art with theme park quality sets, but they also work very well as top of the line escape rooms.

In terms of the rooms we did, in order:

-The Collector: My least favorite of the five rooms, but still an outstanding experience. The opening sequence at the bottom of a well - a la Silence of the Lambs - is a really impressive physical set, and as the game evolves, it has some really clever puzzles, some nice gross out moments, and an innovative use of physical space. I would've loved to see even more story moments to match the great theming.

-Tomb of Anubis: The hardest of the rooms that 13th Gate Escape offers, Tomb of Anubis is a gorgeously realized, immersive, HUGE Egyptian tomb. One of the very best I've seen. The puzzles were terrific and well-integrated, the sets were amazing, and it was SO satisfying to escape this one. The one mild knock I'd have is that the game relies heavily on a journal as a kind of runbook through the experience.

-Cutthroat Cavern: The most famous of 13th Gate Escape's rooms, and with good reason. The sets of Cutthroat Cavern, be they gigantic, life size Mayan ruins or an underground grotto compete with a real sandy beach, pirate ship wreck, and waterfall, are beyond compare. The game is a wonderful, immersive, Goonies style adventure. Whether you love all the puzzles or not, you'll never forget this room.

-The Asylum: The scariest room offered by 13th Gate Escape - which is meaningful, since 13th Gate is primarily a haunt - the Asylum did not disappoint. Great sounds, smells, jump scares, and more combined to make a tense and uneasy atmosphere. The Asylum also had very tight, well-done escape room puzzles and a narrative that was so developed it even had plot twists. It was great.

-Spellbound: A nice final room, the theme - witches versus vampires in the Louisiana bayou - could not be more perfect for an escape room set in Baton Rouge! Many of the puzzles in this room were very fun, and the change in tone from light-hearted and whimsical magic to grim, gothic horror as the adventure progressed was great.

All in all, we escaped from five truly incredible rooms, and this experience was everything I hoped it would be. One thing that needs to be said is that our game master, Jamie, was really one of the best ones I've had. I worried that some of the policies I'd heard - the use of Escape Room Boss for clues, the penalties for getting clues, etc. - could make the experience feel more frustrating, but we had none of that. Jamie was an engaged game master who had just the right touch in knowing when to chime in and how to lightly nudge players without spoiling the puzzles. She knew we were enthusiasts who were excited to tackle the rooms, and matched our energy and play style perfectly.

Next time, I'll have to do Death Row, Agent 13, and Hijacked if it is open by then! :)

We are escape room enthusiasts. We have done 100’s around the world. We went with a couple who flew down to New Orleans to meet us just to do these games as they are enthusiasts as well. We did all seven games within 24 hours. First of all, know that you can get a 20% discount on any game after the first one.

If this is TLDR, the generalization would be that rooms are awesome and you should definitely do them! Two minor annoyances: Every game has flashlights being used. The games stay rather dark and while it creates a mood it can be slightly annoying. Several of the games have an IPAD that you take with you. You can use this to look for clues. Honestly, I didn’t like this mechanic - it takes you away from the immersion - and in a dark room it’s hard to take a picture of the barcode. They seem to use it so gamemasters don’t have to pay as close as attention to the room.

Death Room - a solid game. Well done. Worth playing but the set doesn’t have any wow factors like the rest do. The puzzles were good we really enjoyed the room. Not a search heavy game at all.

The collector - dimly lit good game. There is a bit of an “ick” factor in the set (gory) - but the set is very well done. It does have a bit of searching, but has a few unique elements.

Spellbound - Excellent room. No ipad, instead has a “cat” helping you out. Much better for clue immersion. The set was fantastic. A good mix of linear and non-linear puzzles. One of the top two rooms as far as actual puzzling is concerned.

Agent 13 - Honestly, it was awful. One of the worst games we have done in awhile. The set was cool but the puzzles weren’t. Really dark. Super linear. With four people I was literally bored as there are several bottlenecks in which there is only work for two people. Meanwhile the ending is clunky and cumbersome.

Asylum - Makes our Top 10 list of games we have ever played! I scare easy - so I jumped several times - but that actually made it that much more immersive. A great non-linear game. Excellent set and excellent puzzles. All four of us stayed busy the entire time! LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this game!

Tomb of Anubis - Excellent set! This game is the darkest of the sets and you have to use your flashlight a lot - but that was the only drawback of the room. The puzzles were good - there are just SO many of them. We did not escape - but we still had a blast. Honestly, this is the only room where I felt like it should be a 75 minute room.

Cutthroat Cavern - The set is amazing. Seriously amazing. There are a few good puzzles, but this room is a search heavy room - annoyingly search heavy. I actually didn’t have that much fun because the room is SO big and you are just supposed to be searching. This room could have benefited from a book or better laid out clues as the searching just felt so random. However, the set is great. We did this one last and honestly, I wish we would have done it somewhere in the middle. The puzzling was a bit of let down to end on.

Overall - totally worth our trip to Baton Rouge. Highly recommend this facility. All four of us agreed that Asylum was one of the BEST GAMES we have EVER played. We all agreed that Spellbound and Tomb of Anubis were in the top 3 puzzling rooms here, and while we don’t love the puzzling involved in Cutthroat we did enjoy the set.

Like several reviewers, we have done more than 100 escape rooms. The rooms have high production value. We really felt like we were in another country, location, or environment. It was incredibly immersive. We did 6/7 of the rooms. We chose to skip Asylum because we were afraid it was going to be too scary!! Ha! The best game was Cutthroat Cavern. Tomb of Anubis was amazing as well, but the puzzles were more difficult to understand. Some times we did not know what we were trying to do with the items we were given.

If you play more than one game, they give you a 20% discount on the following games.

It was worth the drive from New Orleans! Lots of fun!

We had heard great things about 13th Gate, and they were right. We did all 7 rooms, and all were fantastic. Cutthroat Cavern and Tomb of Anubis were two of the best rooms we've done (and we've done well over 400 rooms). And, Cutthroat was my wife's favorite of all time! Marissa and Emma were fantastic as gamemasters and very supportive and friendly. Highly recommend going here!!+

Let me start this by saying my friend and I have done around 175 rooms in places all over the world. Before this, our favorite room was a place in Amsterdam. This place has now taken the torch. They take Escape Rooms to another level. The aesthetics, the visuals, the props, the games, the immersive experience, the grand scope Of the rooms. They definitely take this ALL up a notch. Their top room is Cutthroat Cavern. The game is a spectacle on its own. It is a grand scale game. Very unique experience. The puzzles are AMAZING. My second favorite room was Asylum. Great jump scares. Amazing scale on this game. Spellbound was my third favorite. All games have a great flow to them and the staff is extremely helpful. If you only have time to do one. Do Cutthroat Cavern for sure. Best Escape Rooms in the United States. For now. Until we find another one.

I know that many reviews say that they just did the best room in the world, but the two rooms that we just did, Cutthroat Cavern and Tomb of Anubis, redefined the escape room experience for us forever. My family has traveled around the world escape rooms in over twenty States and 6 countries and nothing prepared us for this. If you are looking for a completely immersive challenge at will blow your mind make the trip here!

Disclaimer: There will be no spoilers, however, I am writing this review from the perspective of an escape room enthusiast. Cutthroat Cavern was my 72nd Escape Game.

Booking: 13th Gate usually does open bookings and has a minimum of 4 players. Due to COVID, they have made some changes, please refer to their website. Taylor was super accommodating for me after I explained the extremely small time frame that I would be in the area, we were able to get a booking in place.

The Game: Wow. I'll start off with that. This was my fourth Golden Lock-In Award Winning Room that I have played and it came with very high expectations. The set design and level of immersion was absolutely insane. It was the best of the best. There was no comparison and it is the standard. For me, with my level of experience, I was able to recognize some of the puzzle rather easily. There were a few things that I completely overlooked because they were so immersive. Overall, I would say that the difficultly level was moderate. I think a group of 4-6 would be perfect. We played with 4.

Staff: The staff was awesome and they were super accommodating. They also took time with us in the lobby and chatted about the industry. That is one of my favorite parts of the escape room business. We all have this odd love for the games and the experiences that we share in playing them.

In the end, I highly recommend 13th Gate Escape. Cutthroat Cavern is the standard and it is the best out there. Go play it!
