This museum was once used as a training space for those at the Goodwill-Hinckley Home for Boys and Girls before it was converted in the 1920's. The collection was started by George Hinckley with a few minerals, etc. Louis Carleton Bates funded the conversion project and lent his name to the museum. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and sets on land originally owned by the Chase family, of which former Senator Margaret Chase Smith was a member. The museum is an unexpected treasure trove. The American Impressionist painter, Charles Hubbard, painted dioramas that highlight the 32 Maine habitat exhibits. There are three floors to this museum....galleries full of minerals, shells, birds, mammals, a marlin caught by Ernest Hemingway, a piece of the original trans-Atlantic cable, some artifacts from Babylon, etc., as well as hands-on educational exhibits for the children.

Thank you for posting this detailed review! The dioramas are now 100 years old, as they were painted and constructed between 1922-24. The Museum is also 100 years old. I hope you'll come back and visit us again!

This former home for disadvantaged children was built in 1903. Mr. Bates started collecting things and when the school was decommissioned he began this museum, with his items and many donated, thru 1940. It's really off the beaten path but close to I-95. We came here from Belfast with a few missed turns as gps is a bit sketchy out there.
If you are looking for a natural history museum, this is it-kinda. This Victorian era building houses displays of just about everything from animals including monkeys, bob cats, snakes, birds and fish. There's also lots of other oddly placed items; these items have no chronological semblance of order, and many displays lack identifying info. Nevertheless, it's a museum that takes you back to the late 19th and early 20th century curiosity museums. Displays are willy-nilly but that's the charm. It's a step back in time! It's worth a visit, with super friendly docents, and an entry fee of $3.00-unheard of! But it's kinda like a museum that Stephen King and Rod Serling might use as fodder for a story....for your consideration! I took no pics as one sign said no photo but I don't think anyone would care.

Thank you for your review. I'm glad you had a good visit. I've just updated the background information about the Museum and the Good Will-Hinckley campus on our site. Hopefully that will correct some confusion about what the Museum building was in 1903 (a manual training school, not one of the Good Will homes--those cottages are behind the Museum). Rev. G.W. Hinckley started his natural history collection that eventually became the museum; L.C. Bates donated the money to renovate the Quincy Manual Training School into the museum. It, and the Maine dioramas, are all 100 years old this year. I hope you'll come back to visit--we're working on the willy-nilliness of the exhibits and missing signage.

This museum was very interesting. It was filled with lots of animals that were stuffed, different minerals, Indian artifacts, and Old Timey machinery. It's kind of out-of-the-way but if you're in the area it's worth a quick stop.

First of all this museum is in HInckley, Maine not Minnesota. I bring my children there several times throughout the year. Weekends usually have an event geared toward educating children about nature and Maine, that includes a craft at no cost. Great gift shop and a wonderful staff. There is no heat so if you go in the winter and I highly suggest you check out the website and visit on the weekend, bundle up!

Thank you for this review and correcting the location (and state!). I'm so glad to learn you brought your children here several times throughout the year. We still have a great gift shop, wonderful staff, and no heat. :)
