We visited from NH on a hot afternoon. Tours are of the old meeting house for worship and a house for women. Our tour guide, Mary, was excellent. The staff in the 2 gift shops were so friendly. There was a woodcarver working in the gallery building that you self tour. Visiting the Shaker village for a day is a step back in time to see farming life in Maine both bygone and current, and learn a little about their religious community.

We were on our way to a lilac festival and couldn't resist stopping here for a few minutes. The museum and store weren't open yet due to the pandemic, but the sheep were all hanging out near the barn, as well as a few Scottish highland cattle! So peaceful, with sweeping views of the pasture and forest. A real 'breath of fresh air'.

as the last remaining active shaker community in the world, a visit here is a visit with history. it's in the middle of the Maine countryside and you have to pay attention to the GPS closely to find it but it's well worth the drive. there is a small museum that is self guided. but the gem is the docent led tours of the buildings. they really add a lot of information and color to the story of the shaker settlement.
there is also a small country store that sells items made by the shakers to raise money to support the community. if you are interested, they also have a schedule of workshops for those who are interested in learning things like woodworking etc.

Wanted to tour this place because of the history - the only place where any Shakers are alive and practicing. The tour was informative - learned a lot! Seeing all the different pieces of furniture - some dating back to the 1700s - was great. Definitely a different aesthetic. The village inhabitants keep some animals, which you are not allowed to approach or touch. But these are animals who are living out their lives on a beautiful farm. The six Scottish Highland cows (love these guys!) will just get to roam and eat and relax, which is really nice to see. The buildings are picturesque, and they have a couple of gift shops. Really recommend visiting, although smaller kids might be bored if the animals aren't out for them to see.

The Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village provides unexpected insight to this dwindling religion, its tenets and lifestyle. The museum teaches about simple life at this village from its earliest times into the current century. Tours of the buildings are educational about how the Shakers interacted with the outside world and also within their hierarchy, as well as furniture and products made over the village's many years. A stop in the museum shop provides the opportunity to support the community through purchase of their products, including herbs and teas. The pork rub and the steak rub are fantastic!

Didn't take a formal tour because it was late afternoon, but I stopped by to check out the grounds, store, gift shop, and 30-40 gorgeous sheep in the barn that were being let out to feed in the yard and meadow. What a wonderful place -- the simplicity of the buildings' architecture, that fantastic barn, the views of the countryside, the history. There were some beautiful handmade goods in the store and gift shop, like pottery, woolen items, Shaker rockers and tables, paintings, and all kinds of odds and ends. They also had lots of their canned goods, herbs, and teas. The lake is down the side road from Shaker Village. Such a serene place, far from the 'madding crowd'.

We stopped off at the Shaker Village on the way into the White Mountains, and I am so glad we did. The guide who took us around was very good and informative, it was very interesting so hear about Shaker life. I would definitely recommend it if passing that way.

After many annual trips to nearby Poland Spring Resort (which is always great, too),
rain forced cancellation of the pontoon boat rental over in Naples. What to do? Well,
finally, next-door Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village became our choice....and what a
great surprise it was! The tour absolutely fascinated us! The tour guide (Diantha) presented so much about the Village in a compelling and most-cordial fashion. It was just a whole lot of fun in a mature, "let's understand the story here", way. And there is
quite a story here....quite a story! During our visit...and after our visit...we just kept saying how glad we were to have had this experience. In fact, that's why I am writing this review now. Your visit will be worth your effort, too.

The tour was fascinating and informative and took only about an hour. The three last living Shakers live on this farm. Definitely worth a trip.

Great tour of Museum and buildings in Maine. Informative presentation of Shakers life from 1780 to present. Furniture styles from many periods. Shop sells crafts and herbs.

Hi when we visited the Shaker Village in July we parked up in the carpark and went to the Reception were we where met and then taken around one or two of the buildings. You can then walk around on your own. It was a very good trip, I would definitely recommend it.

Can you bring a small dog on a leash?

Hi Janet! Since the Shakers are still running an active farm, we ask that dogs be on a leash at all times, away from the farm animals, and with their human. Dogs can not go indoors into the Museum spaces so just be sure that they are always with their human, well protected and loved, of course! :)

Is anything in the village open to the public before Memorial Day?

Hi Lynn, The Museum and grounds are typically closed before Memorial Day but Sunday Meeting worship service is always open to the public. That begins promptly at 10am each Sunday. There will also be a volunteer work day on May 13, 2017 friendsoftheshakers . org for more details. Thank you!

We will be on a cruise, so will there be enough time to go to Shaker Village and possibly see Kennynukport as well? Do you know of any tour operators that we could use? We get into port at 8am and leave at 6pm that evening. So many exciting things to do there, but both of these are high on my list.

Can't suggest any tour people. We relied on GPS and google maps to get around. About an hour drive between Shaker Village and Kennebunk area (we hit some traffic). Shaker village has paid guided tours of the property. Should take no more than 2 hours to see the village.
