We didn't know anything about this museum when we headed for it, but wow what a gem! This place is packed with history - both nautical, local and mechanical. It will appeal to history lovers, engineer types, kids who like to see model boats (no touching). The day was rainy and when we got there we were the only ones, our admission fee included a handheld dvd player with the captain and owner of the museum giving a tour a self guided tour from room to room. My family member who worked in shipping was enthralled with the mechanical pieces and I loved the photos and stories of the local history on the sea The Captain (owner) was delighted to answer my family member's questions. HIghly recommend.

The Sail Power and Steam Museum is not just the finest small maritime museum I've ever visited: it's the finest small museum, period. It has a wonderful collection in excellent condition, including a number of historically significant original objects that one wouldn't expect to find here. The descriptive material is well-written, accurate, and entertaining. Everything is very well organized to allow the casual visitor to take in the highlights in a couple of hours (I defy anyone to spend less), but it would be easy to spend a month. Captain Jim Sharp is a knowledgable and congenial host with a wealth of personal experience in windjammers. Don't miss this hidden gem.

Outstanding! Anyone interested in history, machinery, sailing, navigation, exploration, lime industry, well… there is something for everyone.
Outstanding collection of artifacts some dating back hundreds of years, others remarkable for their place in history.
A big part of the experience, currently is to speak with the co-founder, curator, spinner of many of the interesting stories and captain of many of the vessels referenced in the museum, Jim Sharp!
Jim, his wife and probably many others have created a world class museum (in my humble opinion).
The video tour created to walk visitors through the museum enhances the experience even more.
For history buffs that enjoy the sea and sail, this museum seems like a worthy destination.
We were hear to visit Rockland, grab a sail and had a long list of places to go. This was a stand out.

When I was looking on Trip Advisor for things to do on our visit to Rockport, I put the Sail Power & Steam Museum as a favorite because my husband is a Steam enthusiast and we both love sailing. Who knew I would end up with a serious crush on our host, Captain Jim Sharp?!! The museum is so well laid out and the video we were given (narrated by our gracious Captain Jim) was very informative as we strolled through the various rooms. Captain Jim set the Foucault Pendulum swinging for us, explaining the six minutes between every degree principle and setting up pins to reflect said principle, to be knocked down every six minutes. He also spent a huge amount of time with us in the Steam room, starting the air compressor and setting engines running as he explained their history and functions. My husband was like a kid in a candy store! I sat quietly and watched the video about the history of the fishing vessel, Adventure, which finishes with a younger Captain Jim (very handsome!!) speaking about his 25 (?) years with the ship sailing customers on tours of the Maine coast. The ship’s papers were given to Gloucester for Adventure to become her resident heritage sailing vessel. I almost cried as Captain Jim choked up a little on the video as ownership of the beautiful ship was handed over. Captain Jim Sharp is an absolute joy to listen to. He is humble, eloquent, and so generous with his unending knowledge of all things about sailing. We will be back and now have another bucket list event pencilled in; a sail on Adventure in Gloucester! The museum is great for everyone, but I would advise parents to keep a close eye on children who like to touch things because there are many fragile and unique items that would be an absolute shame to lose. (A personal favorite is the narwhal horn!)

I fully agree with the enthusiastic reviews for this hidden Rockland gem. Capt Jim Sharp is the founder and curator. The history of sail and steam power in mid-coast Maine is very well described as well as the prodigious ship-building which took place there. The self-guided tour with Jim's audio and video narration is what makes this such a joy. His experience, passion, and story-telling give life to these artifacts. He weaves these exhibits together with interesting vignettes and his own personal stories from more than 30 years on the water. After the tour you fully understand why Rockland Maine was the fourth busiest seaport in the US in the 19th century, just behind New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Donation of $10 suggested to maintain the museum. Small gift shop

What a great little searfaring museum! We had done the more famous attractions around Rockland before, and luckily noticed the signs for the Sail, Power and Steam Museum. We decided to check it out, and were very glad we did. A great little collection of so many things nautical, and displayed with obvious care. Some expected things, like some ship models, etc., but also a whole display of sextants of various sorts, and even an old ship's stability calculator. This really is a "must do" if you are in the area. It runs purely on donations from visitors, and you will be glad you helped out a couple who have done a great job!

Very difficult to add anything to the comments of the previous reviewers. We were also lucky to walk in when Captain Jim Sharp was commencing a story and were still enthralled 90 minutes later. The only downside to Jim's enthusiasm for the museum is there are so many other exhibits that you might miss out on. I could certainly have spent more than 4 hours here and would recommend anyone with an interest in Maritime History to visit this museum as well as the Maine Lighthouse Museum which is also in Rockland.
