First time here, we were guided by a nice young woman who led us to a room with a video about preserving Maine's shore birds. It was informative apparently there are several islands set aside as preserves.
There is a very nice art gallery upstairs and a gift shop with a good selection of things I thought the puzzle selection was especially nice.
Donations gratefully accepted. Nice way to spend an hour while in Rockland.

The visitor center shows an excellent video explaining and showing how the wildlife refuge is helping preserve several species of shore birds including puffins, razor beaks and terns. There is also a small art gallery, a map showing the dozens of refuge sites a small but attractive gift shop. All proceeds go toward helping maintain the refuge.

We drove right by this is Rockland and decided to visit. I knew very little about the off-shore islands and their birds. Be sure to see the video. The art galleries upstairs which were focused on nature and worth seeing. Free also.

Great place to visit if you want to learn about Maine Birds. Lots of pictures. They have programs at times as well. Todays was all about Whales.

Went on a very slow Monday afternoon, and had the luck to meet one of the biologists, Michael Langlois-- he was charming, very knowledgeable, and used their really extensive shoreline wall-length map to talk about the over all refuge and what was happening where. It's always such a pleasure to get to talk to really passionate conservationists/scientists, and Mr. Langlois was patient and very informative.

The kids thought the experience was "phenomenal", "kid friendly" with a great kids play space hidden in the back. They loved learning about the seabird restoration projects. The second floor has a small gallery upstairs.

We more or less just stopped by the visitor center as we were walking in Rockland. I was thinking that it may be more of a museum but it actually is just a visitor center. When we first walked in no one was around, but a member of the staff did come from upstairs and told us to go ahead and look around There are some pretty cool pictures throughout the center and there is no cost, so not a bad way to spend 15 minutes or so.

this place is about nature and it's preservation...especially wildlife in the island off of Maine's shore. The displays and art exhibits were good.

My experience with this institution is primarily to attend lectures featuring the scientific activities associated with bird research on the islands managed by the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Topics ranging from climate change studies to reintroduction and protection of rare seabird species are covered on a fairly regular basis. There is also an art gallery with evolving exhibits of painting and sculpture of sea life.
