I love simple white wooden New England churches, but this one is very special. This Gothic Revival rural church dates from 1842 and its interior is filled with floor-to-ceiling frescoes throughout, painted from 1952 through 1957 by 13 artists from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. The ceiling fresco is particularly remarkable, as is the church's interior with its original pews, podium, choir loft, and leaded windows. One could easily spend hours here taking in the art, serenity, and overall beauty of the place. Normally you only find churches like this in Europe. It was the highlight of my day trip to the Skowhegan area.

This building is always open to the public, year round. It makes for a nice drive to a unique little destination.

Ce mignon petit bâtiment de 1842 a été restauré d'une manière particulière dans les années 1950. Les élèves de l'école d'art de Skowhegan ont recouvert les murs intérieurs de fresque, c'est impressionnant, et l'ambiance est magique.

Thanks to a featured attraction review in the July 2011 edition of Moon Handbooks Maine (an excellent travel guide for Maine), my wife and I took time to veer off of US 201 as we were driving from our completed timeshare resort visit in Jackman back to Portland. As we were driving southbound on US 201 from Skowhegan, we made a left turn onto South Solon Road and found the meetinghouse a short drive away. The street sign at the corner of South Solon Road and Meetinghouse Road is missing, but we figured out that the white clapboard building had to be this church. An humble stone sitting on a stone base at the front of the church is etched with "SOUTH SOLON." We were not sure if the building would be open, but the door to the left of the stone was open. Inside, a register book is open so that one can record his or her name. I assume that the church is still following the Unitarian tradition of always being available and open to the community. The serene church is a circa 1842 traditional New England meetinghouse that was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Inside, one is in for an exhilarating treat! The interior is completely frescoed with interdenominational religious scenes. A nice notebook with detailed information about the frescoes that are everywhere along the walls and on the ceiling is placed on the small table in the entry of the church. The true pleasure of visiting here is to stroll up and down the aisles on the ground level and then to climb the stairs up to the balcony and take in the marvelous colors and scenes of these fantastic frescoes. We took numerous photographs and were totally amazed by the exemplary artistry of these scenes. We are so fortunate to have taken time to visit here!
