Hello, Firstly, we’d like to thank you for taking the time to get in touch and provide feedback about our rat enclosure. Animal welfare is our main priority, and we are inspected every year for our zoo license by the Local Authority, as well as other organisations. These inspections consider animal welfare, enclosure design and management of each species. We take these inspections very seriously and are always commended for our high standard of animal care. We appreciate your concern regarding the size of the fancy rat enclosure. The enclosure is quite deceiving and has more depth, height, and hiding spaces than it may appear to the public allowing the rats to hide away from public if they choose. The enclosure has a glass front, with the rest of the enclosure being a combination of wood and mesh providing excellent ventilation. The rats at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm were rehomed at the zoo and are incredibly well loved by their keepers, they are handled multiple times a day and given various types of enrichment and exercise away from their enclosure. Our lead Keeper in this area has owned their own rats at home for many years and has put a lot of effort into keeping life exciting for our dynamic duo! As well as regular enrichment and handling, the rats also have an ever-changing enclosure where toys and layers are moved and redesigned two to three times a week to create a new, interesting environment. Enrichment includes a variety of substrates and toys to promote natural behaviours. You have mentioned that our rats do not have constant access to food. Our rats are on a vet approved diet and are regularly health checked by both the team and our expert veterinarians. However, if visitors ever have concerns for any animals here our keepers are more than happy to discuss any concerns or answer any questions with visitors on the day. We have raised areas for little ones at many enclosures around the site and large windows in other areas.
