We were here a couple years ago for a tour but this time we came in to update our tee shirts. They had new styles which so we picked them up to add to our collection.

There's a machine in the heart of this giant fridge that crushes ice blocks the size of upright pianos. The machine, which lives and operates in near darkness, is a kind of spiked roller of a size you'd see on a combine harvester. I reckon it was invented by the makers of early noir horror films, because if you wanted to design a machine for eating humans, this would be it. I have nightmares about this machine.. Victorian health and safety considerations never looked so stark. A wonderful place, sunk in history, ghosts, fish, ice, endeavour.

The video preceding our tour was fascinating....a real trip back in time. And learning about how the ice industry grew, and how it has been an essential part of the fishing industry was very interesting. Fans of "The Perfect Storm" will appreciate this place, as will followers of "Wicked Tuna"!

I can't think of anywhere else one could visit a waterfront business with an interesting history like this. The owner, Scott, is an excellent tour guide who did a good job including the kids who were on the tour.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Don’t set your expectations too high though. If you are a Perfect Storm fan you’ll like their connection to the movie and need some souvenirs. There website is exceptional. You will see briefly where they make the ice and if you are lucky have a boat come in to get ice. It’s a bit pricey for what you get to see, but it’s very unique and you’ll be supporting a great business.

Ali was such a nice sweet girl, but a tour guide she is not. She knew a few things but as far as answering any questions from the group, she couldn't. Everyone kind of looked at each other in disbelief. She is not doing anything to benefit Cape Pond Ice. She needs more education.
We were in absolute shock to see we were stepping on 150 year old slippery frozen floor boards that were flipping up at the other end. This is a very unsafe environment. I can't believe they have a tour. We were expecting something much better than what we got. We saw 25 year old sculptures, and they look 25 years old. They should be discarded.
We really were looking forward to this, and couldn't have been more disappointed.
We were told the business is closing and a brewery is going into their building. That could explain a lot of things especially the building in desperate need of repair. It spreads they don't care anymore. What a shame.

The approx 1 hour Tour was very informative and covered the history of the company, how the ice was harvested then and manufactured now, as well as the different types of ice and techniques for producing it. The tour of the working factory was very interesting.
Gift shop was a big plus as well!

So disappointed, especially after reading the reviews. The tour started at 11 am, and by 11:17 we sat in our car looking at each other in disbelief, we've been had.
Let me preface this by saying my husband LOVES ice, "Ice is Civilization" is one of his favorite quotes, and his grandpa harvested ice from his pond in his younger years. So we were really looking forward to this.
As we milled around the sales office/bookstore/merchandise area eagerly awaiting the tour, I looked through the large window into the manufacturing area - and saw no activity at all. I guess that should have been a hint of things to come, but I didn't take it.
So here is Tip #1: If there is no activity in the manufacturing area, you will see nothing on the tour that you won't see through the window; the only thing you will miss is the smell of ammonia and a brief explanation of the actual ice making process, which, according to our guide Allie, is basically "just a guy with a hose filling up everything and then it has to freeze for about 72 hours". Speaking of Allie - please don't let her give any more tours! No passion, quite boring, very quiet speaking voice, and no knowledge beyond the basics (or at least none that she shared).
Then the intro film started, which I found very interesting and informative - the highlight of the excursion.
Then starts the tour, through the idle manufacturing area into the freezer (which is quite slippery, a another reviewer remarked), look at the blocks of ice, look at a few old ice sculptures ( no kidding, 5-20 years old, according to our guide), and 5 minutes later we are out on the dock. This is the area where the fishing boats get filled up - if there are any. We learned about the movie "The Perfect Storm", the T-shirt and merchandise and ice house tour business that developed because of it, and then back to the starting point to see movie scenes from "Frozen" and "The Perfect Storm" (which we skipped). And that was the tour.
So here is Tip #2: When you are facing the entrance door, look to the dock on your right. If there are no boats to take on ice, all you will see on the tour is a big hose where the ice would come out if there were any boats.
We did buy a T-shirt before the tour began, and honestly, it should be "buy a T-shirt and get a tour for free". So unless you are a huge "the Perfect Storm" fan, this tour will leave you out in the cold ;)

Cape Pond Ice Tour is a great way to spend a half hour especially on a hot day! The no frills tour shows you how the ice business was started and how it is still made today 189 years later.
