This is the 3rd of the historic houses you can visit in Lexington, along with Buckman Tavern and the Hancock-Clarke House. It is a bit out of town maybe 3/4 of a mile away from the others. It is unique amongst the other houses and parts of Minuteman Park because it tells the story from the British point of view. The tavern was temporarily taken over by the British on their retreat back to Boston and used as a field hospital. They have a short movie and exhibits. They have a short audio recording that plays in each room which describes the room and contents.

Like many of the historic sites, this beauty was also closed due to I believe to COVID. We did stop to take few photos and read up on the tavern which served the Brits as a field hospital. Disappointed we couldn't go in and tour it.

My husband and I were visiting family in the area at Thanksgiving. On Friday we decided to go to a few historical sites. It was nearly the end of the day when we got to this site, but the tour guide at the Tavern welcomed us; helped my husband use the accessible lift; and gave us a thorough, lively, interesting, and wholehearted tour of the building. A great experience!

The Munroe Tavern along with the Clark-Hancock House, and the Buckman Tavern are owned by the Lexington Historical Society. It costs $10.00 to visit the Munroe Tavern or $20.00 to visit all three. The Clark-Hancock House is the only one where you must take a guided tout. You visit the two taverns on your own.
The Munroe Tavern is about a mile from Lexington Center. IT DOES NOT OPEN UNTIL NOON. For this reason, we saw it last. There is parking, beautiful grounds, and an indoor restroom.
Your visit starts with a video. For me this was the best part. The video is shown from the British perspective of things. It really made me think about what I would have done had I been alive at that time. Have we been taught a lot of "fake news"? Only five people died in the Boston MASSACRE which was precipitated by unruly colonists harassing the British Soldiers. The colonists STOLE the expensive tea that they threw into the harbor.
My problem with the tavern visit was the audio part. You press a button as you enter a room and someone starts to speak, The problem is that it is not loud enough. The noisy, squeaky floors also make it difficult to hear the speaker. The telephones at Buckman Tavern are much much better.
I also found the rooms in Buckman Tavern more interesting in that it was a real tavern with kitchen, meeting room, woman's dining room, and tap room. The only room that I found interesting in Munroe Tavern was a room upstairs and that was because George Washington had had dinner in it in 1789 and the actual chair he sat in was still there.
By all means, if you have time, visit both taverns. But if you are interested in seeing an eighteenth center tavern, Buckman tavern is much more representative of a tavern.

Unlike the Buckman Tavern and the Hancock-Clarke House, the exhibits in this museum describe the movements and experiences of the British troops on that fateful mission to Concord to confiscate arms and military stores being accumulated by American revolutionaries. They tell the history of the beginning conflict in the American Revolutionary War from the British perspective. One gets a sense of the desperate struggle the British army soldiers engaged in that day. Even though it is farther afield than the other sites on the ordinary Lexington tour itinerary, it is well worth a visit to get a fuller understanding of that fighting.

First room a guide tells you how it all really happened and is very informative. Then the other four rooms are audio guided. Loved all the history and stories. Upon leaving I saw people working in the garden, the flowers were beautiful and very fragrant.

being from the area I've sen a lot of revolutionary war stuff in my time. Today was my first visit to Munroe tavern and I have to say for such a small museum I was very much impressed. It tells he tale of the beginning of the american revolution from the perspective of the British since on April 19th 1775 it was commandeered for a few hours by the retreating redcoats on their way back to Boston, they used it as a field hospital and a command center.
There's a short movie that sets the scene for you when you first go in and then the rooms have an audio button that describes each room to you and brings it all to life. The last room is dedicated to a visit by George Washington in 1789 and even still has the original chair that he sat in in the room. the staff was wonderful and very informative. They also offer guided tours.

It's amazing just how many taverns were open in the period of the skirmish here. This was is a little bit different with the presentation of the English period uniforms. But it is especially historical because George Washington dined here on his tour around the nation.
If you enjoy history, this is a must stop and see.
