Had the sweetest visit to this museum of my childhood, over Thanksgiving weekend. I love this little museum! Very interesting video about rescuing Snowy Owls from Logan Airport, including a scene where they weigh the owl---rather undignified for the poor thing, but quite amusing to me---AND plus, they already had the season's first miscreant in one of the holding pens, waiting for release in a new location. Fascinating displays on "backyard" wildlife, with buttons to push to hear the sounds of each of them. (Now not certain whether I hear foxes or screech owls at home.) A small number of animals in outdoor holding pens---the eagle was particularly friendly and wanted to have a conversation. They also have a great gift shop. Bonus is a series of nice hiking trails! The museum is small---maybe an hour---but the hiking trails could fill more than a day.

On vacation in Massachusetts with a friend from the area, we went to the Blue Hills Trailside Museum one afternoon. It was a re-visit for both of us.
The building housing indoor exhibits was closed due to COVID-19. We half-expected that.
We went up the trail around the animal exhibits.
The otter exhibit was closed for improvements. This was a big disappointment for both of us because we went there planning on watching the playful, fun-loving otters. It was half our purpose in going there
We did see the white-tailed deer, turkey vulture, black vulture, bald eagle, snowy owls and a red fox.
Of the wildlife I did see, I liked the bald eagle the best. He was very active in his habitat. He did come over close to the fencing to check me out and stayed until I left his area.
As we headed down the trail to the exit, a worker with the Mass. Audubon Society arrived. We talked with her for awhile.
With the otter exhibit closed, the Blue Hills Trailside Museum lost some points with us.
We rate the Blue Hills Trailside Museum at 4.0.

Loved this place before Corona and loved it now that it's reopened. Extemely safe. There's a pre-registration system and they have limited hours on the weekend so be sure to reserve ahead of time. My 2 yr old son has loved this place since he could walk. Post-Corona, it has a one way path through the outdoor exhibits, the little musuem is closed and masks are required. The duck feeder station is no longer available, so be sure to bring your own healthy duck feed! It only takes about 15 minutes to leisurely stroll through the exhibits, but you can take advantage of the nearby hiking trails before or after (it gets pretty busy by the late morning though).

It's often important to get introduced to the location you're visiting, and I found the Trailside Museum a great place to do so for Blue Hills Reservation in terms of location, information presented and staff helpfulness.
The museum is the center for public interpretation of the reservation and a convenient place to enter as it has ample parking and 716 Shuttle MBTA shuttle access about a 15 minute hike from the top of Great Blue Hill where you can access the Skyline Trail, climb Eliot Observation Tower, and visit the Weather Observatory.
Outside, there are spaces for wildlife that could not survive without human intervention, and inside, there is more such wildlife and information on the hills' human history. The interior is well-themed for children but was not un-interesting to engage with as an adult.
While I was at the museum, my camera batteries died, and my day's plan to document the visitable history of the Blue Hills would have been completely ruined if not for one but TWO staff members finding me batteries (By the time I was done in the museum I'm sure they wished they had given me the ones to the frog machine). It was a huge help, and it seemed like they really want people to enjoy their visit to the reservation. The only caveat was that I would return them when I returned from hiking, but I returned too late to give them back directly! I did put them in a box outside labeled "Passport to Nature" though, so hopefully the batteries were found and the staff knows their generous help was appreciated!

There was a man at the museum that brought in a falcon and other birds of prey to show the crowd as well as a turtle and a snake.

A lovely small natural museum there are many displays and activities for younger visitors. This museum has several live animals in the building as well as in the grounds behind it. It is a great way to learn about local wild life plant and animal.

Lots of great animals to see and learn about. Very well kept and lots of fun for kids. You can also walk up to the Observatory from here or do the trails through the Blue Hills.

The Trailside Museum at the foot of the Blue Hills is a great spot for families. The museum is small and “low-tech” with a focus on observation. Indoor exhibits are highly visual, like a glassed-in beehive where one can watch bees enter and exit the hive, build cells, and communicate with the “bee dance.” Another exhibit shows how people native to the area used nature to survive. If you’re lucky (or have planned), you can see a presentation.
Program teachers are knowledgeable and committed; their passion for their subject shows. Part of the Trailside Museum’s mission is to rehabilitate injured animals, and in doing so they provide an engaging and educational experience with nature.
If you don’t visit the indoor museum, free of admission you can walk the outdoor paths to see a playful otter, turtles, deer, a fox, birds of prey, owls, ducks, geese and chipmunks. You can do more serious hikes on the hiking trails, from easy to challenging. Check the website for hours and programs.

This is a hidden gem. Great place for younger kids to learn about nature. They have animals, displays, bee hive, nature walks. Great programs for learning about local environments. They always have something going on - we've gone on nature walks, meet the animals, night time owl walks, fire fly life cycle. Your kids will love the swimming otters.. And you can hike the Blue Hills after your visit.
