Really enjoy the woodsy feel of this trail, got to be aware of doggie and horsey drippings though. One big hill will test your legs but overall a very nice hike.

Lovely area but dg owners do not clean up after their pets. Unable to walk trails without looking down for dog poop.

The park is large enough to get a solid 1-2 hour walk in without backtracking your trail. Most of the trails are moderate enough for mountain biking and hiking for those who struggle with rocky trails or steeper inclines. Download a trail map from the mass.gov website before you go. Dogs are supposed to be leashed but I have seen many people walking their dog off-leash. (which I am fine with) Sometimes you see folks on horseback as well. One small lake located in the SW corner of the park if you want to let your dog swim but I wouldn't swim there. Two parking lots and a port-a-potty located in the "upper" or first lot.

Good place for hiking or mountain biking. Bring bug spray! Mostly shady in woods. Lots of trails makes it easy to plan loops of various lengths abs difficulties,

The Upton State Forest is an AWESOME place to visit for outdoor lovers, I have been going for over 30 years. I previously took my dog daily; she got me HOOKED, we'd walk 3 or more miles daily in the forest! I live very close by, and we each loved hiking through the forest. The air is so clean, it is also really relaxing to unwind out in nature. There are maps of the park available near the entrance for newcomers to guide you. The forest also became a bit of an adventure for me as between myself and my dog, we found a bunch of remnants from yesteryear, evidence of early settlers. There is a nice, man-made (Dean) pond on the grounds which is about a halfway point if you walk the full 3 mile loop road. There are no lifeguards there; no one swims there, but it is beautiful to overlook; I generally stop there for a short break to admire the view. There is also a dam built by the CCC's that is pretty amazing.
It is a great hike, but wear your sneakers, comfortable shoes, also bring bug repellent. There are roads in the forest, but they are natural, dirt roads with stones. No vehicles are permitted inside the forest. The paths are all natural, beautifully so... The terrain is a mix of flat and hilly. Overall, it is an awesome hiking spot. There is also one area that is a big mountaneous for those who like to climb/heights. This park is really beautiful if you like nature. You often also see someone riding by on a horse also on the weekend.
When you first arrive, you will see the Main Headquarters, the former CCC camp. There are picnic tables there set on former foundations of CCC buildings, so you can have lunch, then go hiking or vice versa. The main building is closed, but for rare special occasions when they open it up. There is also a small house there, the former infirmary, also closed to the public, but for special occasions, so there is no place to get a drink or food here, but there is a porta potty not far from the main headquarter building available for use.
If you go, I recommend allowing yourself at least a couple of hours. I do NOT recommend baby carriages, they don't fare well on the dirt, some rocky roads. Someone could push a baby carriage around the main campus area, which is paved, but not inside the forest. Again, this is an ALL NATURAL forest... the roads in the forest are not paved, they are dirt, all natural, which I think makes it more beautiful... I think that anyone that loves nature would love the Upton State Forest! It is a GEM!

This was my first visit to Upton State Forest. There were two parking areas. One was just outside what appeared to be the forest headquarters. There you will find one porta-potty. There's a walking path that leads to another parking lot. Both provide plenty of parking.
This State Forest has unpaved roads and trails. While you walk on the trails you may meet, hikers, bikers, joggers, and horseback riding as well as people walking their dogs. You may walk by a brook, river, and pond.
You may be able to pick up a map of the trails. One trail is designated with a 💗 which indicates that it is used for easy to moderate hiking.
✴️✴️ There are signs posted so people are aware that during hunting season people should wear blaze orange.
Overall a very nice place to hike. It wasn't heavily populated and everyone we meet was friendly.

Upton State Park has several trails that are great for hiking and biking. The trails are really made for novice to intermediate skill levels.
Parking is generally not an issue, there are 2 lots so even if one fills up, you can usually find a spot in the other lot. Note, there is limited (if any) restrooms.
Upton has a lot of horse farms, so it's not uncommon to see people horse back riding here, the trails are multi-use after all.

This was easy to get to and there was plenty of parking. It is a leisurely loop with nice views of the water, large cool rocks and you share the path with other walkers and horses. There was a sing we saw after the fact to say "hey" when horses approach. There is one small incline which is prefect for someone just getting their hiking legs going. Everyone we passed were friendly. If you are looking for a workout then this is not the hike for you,

Upton State Forest has no admission or parking fees. There are two good size, free parking lots which offer plenty of available, unmetered parking, there is more along a nearby street, which really is unnecessary as those two lots are NEVER FULL. At the main entrance as you enter the forst, also by the main campus building/headquarters, there are donation boxes, but donations are strictly voluntary.
