I live in the UP but had never been all the way around the Keweenaw Peninsula. It's spectacular!! Some of the drive from Calumet to Copper Harbor on US-41 is a tunnel of trees!! Besides, the forests, waterfalls, lighthouses, etc., I didn't realize how important copper mining was to our nation. That history was very enlightening. Proud to be a Yooper!

We loved using Calumet as a starting point for an exploration of the Keweenaw. We stopped at the Jam Pot, WoodN Spoon, art galleries, historic sites and lighthouses and life-saving stations, Drove the Brockway and Route 41 and shopped the little stores in Copper Harbor and Eagle River.

The Keweenaw Peninsula is a fantastic area of woods, waterfalls, trails, lighthouses, and history. We went from Houghton, through Calumet and the NHP sites, along US Route 41 to the end of it, checked out Fort Wilkins, Copper Harbor, Brockway Mountain, Eagle Harbor, Jampot, and Eagle River. It was fantastic.

The Keweenaw is a beautiful, unique place. The beaches, roads, ruins, historic places and people who live there are all Awesome! That's why it was disappointing to make a special trip to use the ORV trails and be SO Disappointed! We checked the Keweenaw ORV groups site and they made it look like most of the trails were open. We asked at the American Inn, which is a trail head, and they said most trails were open. They showed us a map that was basically a rough drawing with a black line through it that was supposed to make some sort of sense? Trails were TERRIBLE for the most part. We hit two different trails that were closed that everyone said were open! One trail was almost washed out by a beaver dam and another had a bridge that was dangerous to cross because part of it was missing with spikes sticking up. My thought is, maintain and promote the trails you have THAT ARE OPEN! Make sure EVERYONE in the area who might deal with riders, knows what's open and closed and have Current Maps Available at motels, campgrounds and visitors centers. Encourage businesses or organizations to adopt parts of the trail to maintain. If you continue to do as you are, people are not going to come back for the trails or someone is going to get lost or hurt!

It’s a beautiful place for a drive. I took my kids up for a few days. Nice drive. Great views. Lots of waterfalls. A nice place for a drive.

This is easily the most beautiful area of the Upper Midwest, Minnesota has the drive along the North Shore of Lake Superior and Wisconsin can't really compare to either. Eagle Harbor to me is more genuine than Copper Harbor but its all good everywhere, we stayed at a simple cabin on Lake Bailey right near everything.

I saw on the reviews about renting a atv to go on trails, we have a jeep, can we go on those trails w/a jeep?

You can purchase a state trail sticker that allows you to go on the DNR designated trails with any type of ORV but you cannot take anything other than a side by side or ATV on the Keweenaw ATV Club sponsored trails.
