Our family of 7 did a day trip to Isle Royale, both directions on the seaplane. We have done a similar trip in Florida so we had something to compare this to. The plane ride went well and the pilots did a great job. Everything was organized and timed perfectly and safety was a priority.
The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars, our whole family was slightly disappointed that the entire ride was quiet, neither pilot giving any history of the area or talked unless talked to. When we did this in Florida we had a recording to listen to in our headset of the area and the history and our pilot was very informative and pointed things out. This time we just listened to “white noise or fuzz” the whole ride both ways.
We were slightly disappointed that we didn’t really learn anything and it was “just a ride”. They didn’t have a jar for tips or anything, so maybe they weren’t trying to be exceptional

This was my 11th trip to Isle Royale, 8th in a row, and I always use the seaplane. I was on the first flight at 8am and hiking on the island by 9:15am. The seaplane is a great way to start and end the trip. Flying into the island is always exciting. Weather caused my flight back to be canceled but thats what the Isle Royale Queen IV is for.

Isle Royale Sea Planes out of Houghton, MI is a well oiled machine from start to finish. It was the only way for us to get to Isle Royale because the ferry's weren't running. Our flight over was sunny and calm and the flight back was in high winds and choppy waters, all handled expertly by the pilots and ground staff. We wore headphones for noise protection, but the pilots did not communicate over them. We scheduled our fights to have maximum time on the Island. You know how flights are progressing from the Island with a TV screen outside the Visitor Center on the Island. On time and professional. We highly recommend them.

Pretty nice flight to the island. Super intense lady running the show when we flew out.
The flight home was wonderful; peaceful. Maybe it was just that I was tired. Maybe it was that no one was bugging me about "tearing off 20s" like this weird Gunther guy did on the flight there. Upon landing, the pilot was removing our smelly gear from the storage, and my backpack strap got stuck on something. I tried to help, but then the same stressed out lady stopped me, with her hand, and said, "The pilot will remove the bag completely and hand it to you." Her tone was flat and annoyed. I'm not saying she was doing Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs, "It places the lotion in the basket," no, I’m just sayin. Well, the pilot worked really hard to get the backpack untangled. 30 seconds or so passed before he handed it to me but that lady made it so awkward and intense that it seemed like it took a whole hour. We all had to sit there watching the pilot struggle with the darn strap, like we were a group of parents punishing a 6 year old for not eating his cream of wheat. So we all just sat there and watched him eat it.

This was a great experience- my husband and sister had not been on a seaplane. They loved it and so did I. The pilot was conscientious , friendly and punctual. We loved seeing everything from the air on a beautiful day.

As a recent passenger on a flight from Grand Marquis to Isle Royale I would like to recommend considering the ferry if time allows. Since the flight departed from the local airport you really only experience the ‘sea’ part for half of the experience. During my past experiences on small aircrafts I have always had the opportunity to not only wear headphones for ear protection but also so I could communicate with the pilot. You will not find that on these flights. It was very loud and the pilot was so rushed he didn’t worry about getting our names. It was a beautiful flight, no doubt, but not one I would take again or recommend.

This is the sole national park concessionaire offering flights to Isle Royale National Park. If you have the money (between $300-$350 per person roundtrip) you can trade money for time since the only other method to reach this park is a 4-6 hour ferry ride. We opted to depart from Grand Marais, MN since we also visited Voyageurs NP previously. There are also departures form Houghton, MI. Our flight was approximately 45 minutes. We had a smooth ride and saw from the air the Minnesota coastline as well as Isle Royale. It was great from the air. Superb pilots like Tomas take your safety and comfort seriously. The only drawback to this method of travel is regard to weather. The outfit does its best to ensure timely departures and arrivals.

With the ferries closed, we were trying hard to get to Isle Royale in our quest to visit every National Park. They understood our quest and worked with us on various options. We had originally planned to go out of Grand Portage, but they said they had more flights and earlier departure dates from Hancock, so we went there instead (as RVers, it didn't matter). Regrettably, on our departure day it rained and rained and our flight was eventually cancelled. They kept us informed throughout the day as they kept pushing back the departure time hoping for a break in the weather. We appreciated their transparency, safety priorities, and efforts to try and get us there on the designated day rather than just cancel at 8am and leave it at that. Yes, we couldn't go the next day because they were fully booked, but with limited seats what do you expect? Our original day trip was planned for Rock Harbor, but they said they could get us to Windigo quicker, so we again changed. Again, we appreciated their efforts to get us there by hook or crook as we had requested. Our day came and we had clear weather! We had smooth flights and unlimited visibility on the departure and return flights, which were both exactly on time. In fact, on the return flight we left a bit early because all the passengers were pooped and ready. A good day and good flights with a quality provider.

We were really excited about our trip to isle Royale and our flights booked with this company, it was the highlight of our 11 day roadtrip through Michigan. Unfortunately the day of our flight was too windy to fly and our trip was cancelled the night before. Communication was challenging since we were camping in remote areas, but this company did everything they could to accommodate us and get us on flights out the next day. You really need to be flexible when building this into your trip. The weather is so unpredictable and is out of the control of the airline. We were able to rearrange our days and didn’t miss anything on our itinerary. The island is amazing, my only regret is that we didn’t plan more time there! The pilots were extremely talented and even with wind the flights were smooth. Even though this was our only option to getting to the island, I would choose them again! Thank you!

Horrible experience, I cannot stress enough to look for other options as booking with these guys is not worth ruining your planned trip... Horrible customer service and multiple plane mechanical issues.
Lets be clear... Their policy is that if your flight time is missed/delayed for any reason (mostly fog delay) your flight is essentially canceled and they will try to squeeze you in between their other scheduled flights at their leisure. You are NOT next in line to fly out once they are able to resume. I understand their logic for this and fundamentally disagree with this policy as we made a 9 hr drive and were essentially told we were s*** out of luck.
We were supposed to depart Sat @ 10am and ended up getting pushed to Tuesday due to the weather delays on sat morning and a plane having mechanical issues. We were on the hook waiting all day sat until they finally told us at 10pm that we would have to wait until Tuesday at 2pm. This completely ruined our planned 8 day through hike from Rock to Windigo as they told us our only option was Windigo to Windigo for the 5 days that were left...
Upon trying to depart the island the following Saturday @ 11am we loaded up and sure enough the seaplane would not start. We were stuck there a few hours not knowing if we would spend hours or days. Luckily they squeezed us in on another flight @ 4:30 but I know others were not so lucky.
Plain & simple, this company operates a maximum capacity with little room to account for weather or mechanical issues. They could care less if they have to refund you for your missed trip, but its not just about the ticket price. We lost our experience, our time, and were treated with extremely poor customer service as they don't have the resources/time to speak with you. The stress in dealing with this company is not worth it.
This company does not care about you. Zero effort was made on their part to offer anything other then sorry your flights canceled do you want you money back or go in three days? They are currently the only game in town due to Covid and they have all of the negotiating power to do what they want because there is no other option.
On the plus side... we took off & landed in a decent amount of wind and I was fully confident in Thomas as a pilot.
