Beautiful view and SUNSETS! - clear warmer water and sandy beach...
พ.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
My husband and I have been living near Cheboygan State Park for 11 years, however; we used to come here often before moving to Northern Michigan.

Lake Huron is beautiful! and Cheboygan State Park and Duncan Bay Beach is awesome. Our visits have been for the day. Mostly we visited in the afternoons/early evenings. The water is crystal clear and you can see to the sandy bottom. And, the water is shallow a long ways with sand bars here and there. We put our beach chairs right in the water and let the gentle waves lap over us. In the summer, the Rangers put buoys in the water to mark the safest swimming areas. And, they raise and lower the colored flags to let folks know of the water conditions. A life boat is on site also.

The State Park has a wonderful beach pavilion with nice clean flush-toilet bathrooms/changing rooms (entrances parking lot side and beach side) near the beach just in front of the grassy dunes. The pavilion is available for group events with great parking adjacent. An outdoor shower/water spigot and bench is available for use beachside.

September 2020, our family needed an alternate gathering place for a Celebration of Life luncheon (our restaurant hall cancelled due to COVID restrictions). Reserving the beach pavilion on-line was easy. The specs are available on-line and the site accommodated my family group. The local restaurant, Great Lakes Grill, catered to the beach pavilion and everything turned out great that day. The day was so sunny and warm that folks could walk the beach and swim too. I talked with the Rangers a couple times about my event and they were very helpful. I printed a map from the State Park website for my downstate family members to easily follow.

In the last 3-5 years or so, the beach has been not so wide and covered with water in areas and with black filaments in the water and on the beach churned up from the burned-out lumber mills from 100 years ago. But last year and this year, the beach has been much longer and wider and clean - and the water clear and beautiful again.

I have ventured the trails with my family members in the park. A few areas in the woods are sometimes covered with water in the Spring. Summer and Fall hiking is fantastic. The trail that takes one through the woods and on the beach dunes/beach is awesome. Also, a historic site is in the woods with interpretive signing - and the dunes/beach trail takes hikers close to one of the lighthouses off-shore. I highly recommend visiting Cheboygan State Park for the day. The campground seems very nice, although I have never stayed overnight. They have teepees that can be reserved too - sounds like fun....

One night self reservation camping visit
ต.ค. ค.ศ. 2019
This is my favorite time of year to drive around up north. We pull into State Campgrounds, pick out our spot then self register. It is very easy and you can get the best spots. Had good weather, great campfire and went to Mulligans in Cheboygon for dinner, very good.

Great place for families!

The tipi is fun to stay in, but the secluded cabins are the best! The Lighthouse Point cabin is right on the water!

Nice Park on the lake
ก.ค. ค.ศ. 2019
I was there visiting my Sister and Brother in law in July. I found it to be a very nice Park, and very busy, but that was to be expected. I did find that the road was really narrow around the sites and tight parking at the sites as well.

Large Private Campsites, Nice Staff, Don't Plan on Swimming by Camp
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2019
Title says it all - we were pleased with the size and privacy of our campsite, the cleanliness of the camp bathroom, the enthusiasm of the young staff, and the quietness of this State Park. It is pretty well off the main highway, so it is peaceful. If you get a campsite on the water, be warned that this is a marshy shoreline and not suitable for swimming, though you the park has a nice beach you can drive to or take a small boat to from your site. Really great State Park!

Very small beach
ก.ค. ค.ศ. 2019
We wanted a day to swim in Lake Huron. The beach is very small. Cheboygan crib has a bigger beach. Thankfully, it wasn't crowded. There are bathrooms, which are clean. The water is shallow over a decent area.

Unexpectedly nice campground
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2019
We traveled here the first part of August and stayed for four nights during the week in campsite #27, camping in a big 6 person tent. Our friends stayed across the road from us in an RV in campsite #24. Our campsite was lovely and shaded with a nice trail to the lake. You can't swim there, certainly, and I think most of the sites that are on the lake are that way, even though one of them has a little beach area behind it. Having stated in the very crowded Traverse City State Park, I would say these are decently spaced but if you want tons and tons of privacy, you won't really find that here. All of the roads are dirt, so it can get dusty and it's harder for kids to scooter (which mine really wanted to do). However, during our time, it was quiet and slow, so there wasn't much dust to complain about. It can get buggy but expect that outdoors near any lake. I would also say that there are some big patches of poison ivy so if you are unfamiliar with what that looks like, make yourself familiar.

I thought the restrooms were adequate based on their age and I felt like they were cleaned more often than others that I've had the unpleasant pleasure of visiting. Showers were hot and are separate from the restrooms.

There is a beach that you can visit; it's right at the entrance to the park, so yes, it's a good ways from the camp area. It has a very nice restroom facility there. The beach itself, however, is lacking. It's mostly grassy dune and one area has basically a swale with water in it. I would say that's the most disappointing thing about the out-of-water beach area. However, the in-the-lake area is awesome; it's super shallow pretty far out, which made the water temperature comfortable during our visit. If you have small kids, they'll have a good bit of area in which to range. It's got a nice sandy bottom, not rocky, which we all enjoyed. I had wanted to drive over to Petoskey to go to the beach there but I'm not sorry we stayed here. It's not a beach that's conducive to large parties or groups of people (we had 7), so that's something to think about.
Overall, we really liked it and would go back.

Has a LOT to improve

Bugs and lots of them. But it's a park near a swamp like area, so that's to be expected - bring Deet. Sort of dated park and poorly designed, as are most parks: camp sites too close - why on earth do park designers do this when they have 10s if not 100s of acres.

Too close of sites is a serious issue when neighbors burn crap/trash and the smoke blows into your site. Bathrooms under sized if near full camp ground and they get "used" and turn into a bad truck stop bathroom fast requiring more than the cleaning schedule that they have. No swimming within 2 MILES because if your camping you have to either walk or drive on 2 miles of the dustiest road ever to get the beach - another why on earth do park designers not provide a direct path to the beach!!

One of the dustiest camp grounds around. Been camping since the 1970s and never had to clean up so much after camping.

They do have ice and firewood until 9 pm, unless they run out, so don't wait.

Hosts were really nice and had coffee donuts etc. for several of the days we were there.

We only had 2 tiny few lights going, but with all the AC's going in the RVs around the camp ground and limited power supply, breakers went a few times for us and neighbors.

Hiking trails was very buggy and many wet areas, so be prepared.

Moving for one site to another one may not happen. Lame computer system and staff who can't seem to take care of something as simple as moving your site/reservation when you ask in the morning and you are told that they will take care of it, but when you come back from the day and there's someone in the site you had organized...

we could go on, but it's time to just say We Won't Be Back.
