A perfect place to camp while exploring Copper Country and Houghton area! There was some erosion on the banks so some sites are not appropriate for people with small children. Our site had a huge open area behind it for recreation.

Stopped here to walk the beach. Very pretty and clean. The campground area was really nice so if you are camping I would suggest this.

We stopped in to see Lake Superior. Beautiful beach with sand and pebbles. It was calm when we were there. Water was beautiful and warm on a warm day in July. Very clean and not too crowded.

Some nice vistas and short easy hikes. It's mostly a campground. But, a really nice one. Looked like it was a nice place to camp.
There is a fee to bring your car in if you are from out of state. We parked across the street and walked in since we were only hiking.
The Bear Lake hike is nice on the land side of the highway, but the lake is really more of a marsh so bug activity would be pretty high when the wind is not blowing.

$9 for a day pass. Recommend to skip if you have a dog. There is a smaller dog beach area and some short hiking trails on which dog are allowed but cannot bring on the main beach or out to the lighthouse. Many free beaches to hit up in the area where you can bring your dog. (Try Gratiot County Park instead if you don't mind dirt roads). Looks like a nice area to camp if that's what you're looking to do.

This State Park is straight north of Hancock right at the mouth the Portage Ship Canal and Lake Superior. The park sits up on a bluff and you can park and walk to the edge of the bluff and look over a tremendously scenic view. There are different types of campsites. Call to see if the type you prefer is available.
Along the edge of the bluff the Park Service has placed double seats/benches that are connected by a small table. They are perfect to take a morning cup of coffee, or an afternoon drink, and just sit and look at the million dollar view.
I am not a camper. I just love to go there with morning coffee and and look at the lake.

Stopped in as we were passing just to get a look at the lake. The woman at the booth, Madison, was very friendly and told us how to get to the lake and informed us she thought people were surfing as a lot of cars had come through with boards. OMG, they were surfing! It was only 53 degrees, raining and so windy that they were walking almost sideways out onto the pier to jump in. WOW! So glad Madison shared this with us!!!

A park we visited as kids when traveling from the Detroit area to the grand parents in Houghton, MI.

The State park on Lake Superior has many visitors to simply take in the beauty of the lake and clear waters and enjoy the cooler and low humidity days and nights. The water can be rather cool for southern folks, but also quite refreshing. The campgrounds easily accessible and close to the lake. Spend a day there and enjoy a great lake.

We were in Houghton for a family wedding and decided to camp out at McLain State Park. It was far enough away to provide the quiet retreat from the festivities and close enough to get into town easily. We were at the farthest campsite from the modern washrooms, so we only had an outhouse at our disposal which was a bit of a pain sometimes. I think they could use another washroom, but that is our only complaint. The site was large and private and the walk to and along the beach was lovely.

Really nice park. Great for kids. Big campground right on the shore. Lighthouse and harbor. Very clean, quiet and peaceful. Hiking and biking all over. There is a lot to like here.
