Surprisingly interesting. You don’t need to be into nautical history or the Coast Guard to enjoy. Lots of “ladder steps” so it’s a bit challenging for those with bad knees or stiff joints, but generally manageable. Gives you a deeper appreciation for those service men and women who manned the ship, and the clever engineers who designed it. Can’t imagine what it had to be like in the winter, breaking ice in the Straight, but this gives you an idea.

Very interesting self guided tour of the USCG retired icebreaker ship. Full access to the entire ship from engine room to control deck. Interesting mission the ship had to keep shipping routes open from 1944-2006.

We were only in town overnight but this was a “must do” for us. The museum is the ship,itself and its moored centrally in town. There is plenty of free parking. The museum is staffed by volunteers and they are all friendly and enthusiastic about the ship. We learned lots about the huge amount of shipping traffic on The Great Lakes and the role of icebreakers to keep that traffic flowing during the winter. We spent about an hour here - which is a long visit for us!! Highly recommend

Very interesting to see the history and how these ships work. Self guided tour let’s you take as much time as you want. Knowledgeable staff to answer questions.

This was well worth the stop if you’re in the area. The history. And being able to self tour, the ship was a bonus. The videos really gave you a clue as to what they were going through as crew. And the gift store was nice to.

The Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum was one of three attractions that we chose for our day in the city. The staff were all friendly and helpful. I was touched that the woman in the ticket booth expressed appreciation for my husband's military service. The staff onboard were sufficient and helpful, especially the woman in the engine room who told us of the locomotive engines that run the ship.
Directional signs were helpful to keep patrons moving in an organized manner to view all areas of the ship. Videos explained the aspects of the icebreaker's function and daily activities aboard ship. This attraction is definitely worthwhile.

It was an interesting and detailed exhibit of a decommissioned Coast Guard icebreaker that contributed so much to American economy. Could someone please explain to me the thought behind having a copy of Mein Kampf at the foot of Rosie the Riveter in the "women in the military" exhibit? I asked one of the volunteers and he told me it was there for education. Makes no sense.

Great experience. Very informative crew. Well worth the time and cost. Gave a great feel for what it was like to be assigned to this ship, as far as living quarters, engine room.

Great place to learn more about the USCG icebreakers on the Great Lakes, in addition to the interesting history of this ship. Nice views of the area also from on the deck.
