Easy in easy out as long as you go early! We love launching our boat here. The bathrooms are usually pretty clean and the staff is friendly.

Worst camping experience
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2020 • เพื่อนๆ
Train personnel to not be combative. We will NEVER return to this campground. The DNR/ ranger was very inflammatory causing dissension with campers. He used his position to bully them. He was unprofessional in his conversation and mannerisms. He was flashing his light in campers faces and argumentative. He requested music be turned down, the campers complied but he still argued with them. He then returned 2 hours later with the police stating that there was music playing, which was a lie. He also lied in front of the police officers about shining his light in campers faces. As he left this DNR officer unplugged the campers RV without notifying them. This behavior is incorrigible. He represents the Michigan State Parks. There are so many campgrounds in Michigan, this makes me consider avoiding all of them. It will be a long time, if ever that I will use a Michigan State Park.

3 days of summer fun
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2020 • ครอบครัว
We did a 3 day trip with our 3 and 5 year olds. It's a huge campground, 4 sections in all and they are all pretty much the same so it does not matter which one you book at, closer to the shoreline on any section would be most appealing. Sites are kinda packed in, but there are still many big trees for shade. Not too much grass, lots of dirt and the kids looked like pig pen for the entire 3 days. I wished I had an extra outdoor matt to lay down under the hammock or somewhere else that was high traffic. Lots of dogs, I like dogs! We rented a pontoon boat to go fishing, 8 person boat 360 for the day (8a-7p) plus a 350 deposit. The lake is huge and shallow for a long way from the shore then really deep. I quickly decided that I am a professional boating captain of the high seas, but was knocked back down to size when I hit an unexpected shallow area going full speed. Fyi- the propeller cost 103 dollars if you return it mangled. And they put you on the wall of shame in the camp store, lol. Nice long shoreline with lots of sandy areas to set up your beach day. I was disappointed with the amount of little pieces of litter all over the shore. People pull their pontoons really close to shore to store for the night and have to walk out in the water to get off and on. They probably drop trash on accident. We went out and picked up a bag before we left and were kind of grossed out by the amount of bandaids, I picked up probably 80ish?? We left it better than when we came and would definitely come back, with our own boat.

Great family beach!
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2020
Beautiful beach area and large shallow swimming area. Beautiful tall trees for shade if desired. Clean bathhouse and restrooms. There was even a store to pick up snacks, ice, etc. for those with a boat to anchor outside the swimming area and walk to the store!

Perfect for kids AND for boaters
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2020
We stayed here 3 nights. The campground is not much different from other state campgrounds, some sites are small, shady, others are very large. I saw a couple of sites that have full hookup, I guess that's a luxury for state parks. Anyway, here is what we liked and what we didn't:
PROS:
- the lake is amazing. Clean, clear water, shallow with sandy bottom, no waves, small currents. Perfect for children. We did not see any signs and did not get any swimmer's itch like other reviewers in past years.
- the park has lots of playgrounds. Every 100 yards along the beach there are swings and slides for the kids. It's true that they need some updates, but we appreciated that they exist.
- very nice and relaxing hiking, walking along the lake with hidden openings to set a chair and privately enjoy the sunset.
- there is a park store with some minimalistic basic and overpriced needs. Lots of people get excited that they sell ice cream, we did not care. We bought snacks and plastic bags. They don't sell beer.
And now, unfortunately, the CONS:
- the people. Yes, the people that come to this park are those kind that in full pandemic won't wear a mask to go inside the store or in the public restroom even when it's mandated. But, forget about the mask, they don't even wash hands or flush the toilet (some need you to push a button to flush it, the automatic flush system does not always work). The people, are those kind that leave their children and pets unsupervised to roam around other's camp sites. Large groups take up 6 to 8 joining sites, setup a giant wedding-style tent, drinking too much. Noisy kids abusing toy whistles, urinate in public, riding bikes in groups, too fast, yelling at each other and riding too close to parked vehicles.
- too many boats. I guess this is a boater-friendly park, since it has boat trailer parking right in the campground, but many park their boats on their camp sites. And these boats are huge. Here you are in your tiny tent, trying to have a relaxing camping experience, and large trucks towing huge boats try to park right next to you. Many boats on the lake too, docked right on the beach. Some blasting loud music with teenagers drinking, partying like there's no tomorrow. Thankfully, there is a swimming area where boats are not allowed.
- showers and bathrooms are dirty (despite them being thoroughly cleaned due to the pandemic). - no surprise here, I never saw a state park campground with immaculate restrooms. As soon as they get cleaned - and cudos to those working there, they do an above-average job - the first person to use them, leaves a mess for all the others to "enjoy" 24h until the next cleaning cycle. There was hot water, most of the times, so that's good, I guess. And, there was no waiting.
- lots of dogs, on the water, on the beach, in the park. That's ok, but shouldn't they be supervised, leashed, and picked up after?
In conclusion: you love boating and camping, perfect park for you. You like your little kids enjoying clear shallow water, perfect park for you too. But, if you like sandy beach, peace and quiet, this park may not be just right for you.
We'll probably come again, next year.

Crystal Water Heaven
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2019
Camping has always been a favorite vacation activity of ours. When our children were growing up, we camped at South Higgins Lake State Park several times. Every single time we stayed, we were comfortable, happy, and enjoyed every moment.

No matter where you go, you cannot beat Higgins Lake. This is the most beautiful inland lake, literally, anywhere in the world. The water is crystal clear and offers a huge area of shallows that is perfect for small children.

If you have a boat, the marina offers terrifically easy access, and folks are always ready to help if you need it. The harbor is protected and it is easy to pull your boat up in the sand and leave it for your entire stay. The channel is well marked so you will have no difficulty motoring out to deeper water before opening up the throttle.

The camp store offers everything you need. Groceries, clothes, toys, and, ice cream! You'll find it all and more in the camp store. This is also the source of row boats, motor boats, and pontoons you can rent for an afternoon, a day, or for as much as a week.

You'll want to purchase campfire wood locally. There is nothing like the crackling of a fire and tasting those hotdogs and smores!

Higgins lake is a few miles north of Houghton Lake. There are lots of things to do and see in the Houghton Lake area. Just east of Higgins Lake is the community of Roscommon, also a great destination for activities and food.

Choose South Higgins Lake State Park for your camping destination this summer. You will be very happy you did!

This campground was amazing. Excellent price. Pet friendly. Pet beach with plenty of room for your best friend to play in. Spacious campgrounds. Clean. Beautiful beach. The lake is absolutely breathtaking. We will definitely be making more trips to this campground in the future.

Must like dogs!
ส.ค. ค.ศ. 2019
We stayed here two nights before the Labor Day Weekend. The park itself is VERY nice with a lot of amenities such as a park store with ice cream, food, snacks, etc. They rent kayaks and paddleboards by the hour or day.

The camping sites are large and some are very sandy with a lot of shaded trees. The beach is just ok. I thought it would be larger. They have two separate beach areas for dogs which was a good thing because there were a LOT of dogs camping. I have never seen so many dogs at a campsite. I'm guessing this state park is known for their pet friendly atmosphere.

With it being the night before Labor Day weekend there were a lot of people coming into the campground after 10:00pm which was a little bit annoying but understandable of a holiday weekend.

There's not much to do in the area if it's not water related. So with the cooler weather there weren't many options. Would have liked to have more trails to hike nearby.

Overall, great and friendly park staff, clean restrooms and nice camping sites. Just know you "must like dogs".

We checked out this beach on a cooler day, so we didn't go in the water. This looks like a great place for family camping. They have a camp store where you can get pizza, ice cream, etc. Higgins Lake is beautiful, and so is the surrounding forest. Recommend.

Beautiful lake. Time your visit to avoid peak holidays
ก.ค. ค.ศ. 2019
South state park is classic northern Michigan with a crystal clear lake. Park is divided in 2 sides between campground and public beach. Avoid the beach during peak holidays. This is a heavy party area for college and high school students and can get rowdy. Crowds are thick so arrive early in the day to find a spot
