What a great museum!
When we got there it was mayhem outside, since the first Pumpkin Patch Train of the day was getting ready to board. Inside the museum it was nice and quiet. It was kids day at the museum and there were a lot of activities for the kiddos to do; temporary tattoos, balloon maker, games, a haunted train car and a magician. It got a little busier after lunch, but never a problem.
The exhibits are great and you can get inside quite a few train cars. One could spend a whole day there and still not see everything. A lot of reading is involved if you choose to do so.
The museum was decorated for Halloween and it was so much fun to see skeletons all over.

First stop on our North Shore adventure and it was amazing! So much history, so much to see and do. There are three floors of exhibits including old machines and products and the bottom floor is all railroad. Learned a lot about the history from the exhibits and there are so many trains! You can even go into most of them and walk through them, both locomotives and rail cars of all types. You could spend anywhere from an hour to an afternoon here! The model trains were really cool, my son enjoyed the buttons to make them move, as well as the videos and the one that shows the dual drives in motion. Would love to come back and take a ride on one someday as well, as we heard they have tours you can book. Highly recommend this stop if you are in Duluth.

I’ve been to quite a few railroad museums around the world. This one is quite good and inexpensive. However the bathrooms are absolutely filthy (years of dirt). We went on the scenic train ride. We couldn’t get tickets for first class so went in a regular car. The commentary was inaudible and the train was chaotic. So I recommend going to the museum but avoid the bathroom and the train ride. That said it’s really nice that the trains are preserved and the model railway is good. A good museum for children.

Really enjoyed our visit to this attraction! It is a nice mixture of history, with period store fronts and old trains inside as well as out. There is also a small section of model railway displays but most of the museum are full sized, retired locomotives many of which you can go inside. We found this place very interesting and a must for any train enthusiast but fun and informative even for the average person who can appreciate the history of transportation in our country. We did not take the additional train ride but it would be fun if you have the time and/or you are traveling with children old enough to appreciate it.

If you or someone in your family enjoys trains, then you really need to stop in to this museum if you are in Duluth. This attraction features numerous ways to experience numerous types of train engines and cars. In most cases you can enter and explore fully the train. We stopped in before taking the train pizza ride. I thought the train ride would be the highlight of our visit, but the museum ended up being more interesting for most of our group.

Fun experience for the entire family! Plan on bringing a strong bag to carry your pumpkin. The kids loved going through all of the different cars.

Good trip. We arrived at approximately 1:45 pm and made our way inside the museum. We purchased our tickets ahead of time on their website, and received our admission tickets upon checking in. We were met by more than a dozen different full sized trains, with several of the trains being open to explore to visitors. The train cars that were open provided a unique opportunity to view various old artifacts and the setups of old train cars. Each train had an informational plaque outside of it, detailing the historical significance of the train and what it was used for. There were also multiple pieces of artifacts scattered all around the museum, related to trains. On the walls of the museums were more informational plaques, detailing the history of the trains in the area and how trains played and important significance in the culture and history of Minnesota. Alongside one of the back walls was also a recreation of several old historical buildings and what they might have looked like several decades ago.
Tip: I recommend spending 3 hours here if you truly want to see everything.

While I'd heard about it, I had not really thought about visiting this museum until they started doing a series of shows on YouTube during the "COVID Closedown". I was impressed. Very impressed, indeed. There are too many "one-of-a-kinds" to list. The quality restorations are under cover. However, they do seem to have the same "3M Shortage" of other non-government museums: Money, Manpower, Materials. I do have one suggestion: More benches! Especially outside! The visitor and railfan age demographis are going-up. Once past sixty, knees and hips need more frequent rest.
The quality of the restorations here put the National Museum of Transportation (Too many poor quality/deteriorating restorations), National Railroad Museum (Poor quality lettering on many exhibits. Especially steam!) and Illinois Railway Museum (Much of the steam is forever ruined by the removal of much of the moving parts of the valve gear (and presumed scrapped), leaving the locomotive a forlorn shell of its former self.) If you're interested in those museums, I suggest you read my reviews here on TA before going. As rail museums go, this is on a par with the government museums in Strasburg and Sacramento. Yes, it's that good.
While visiting, I ran into the Executive Director of the museum, Ken Buehler. We had an interesting chat. I was surprised to see him on-site on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Usually, Executive Directors are too busy raising money to worry about the "mission". And, are unseen. Especially, on a weekend. Kudos to him for that.
The book and gift shop is a mix of geared towards the casual visitor and serious railfan/modeler. I was able to buy some Great Northern magazines I wouldn't be able to find elsewhere. However, while there are some H0 scale models of good quality, I dodn't see anything in N Scale. Sad, because that's the second most popular modeling scale. While they cater to the need of a casual visitor to buy a cheap "toy" train set for a child, perhaps stocking a few "starter sets" in H0 and N from the major manufacturers might help get a hobby launched for someone.
Other than the need for more benches, the only other criticism I have is the parking. You pay for your parking at a machine using a credit/debit card or currency, which require you to enter your license number or your space number. There are only two machines. When I visited, one machine was totally DOA. The other rejected credit cards and five-dollar bills. And, apparently rejected some "vanity" license plates as mine is all letters. However, it did accept my space number. So, having only three singles on me, my visit time was very limited.
Summary: Originally, I had classified this as a "one and done" along with the museums in St. Louis, Green Bay, and Union. This museum was hundreds of miles out of the way for me on my return trip from California. However, like Union, this museum is worth a repeat visit whether you're a serious train buff or not. Allow at least 5-7 hours to see everything. Even more if you ride the train. Finally, if you're a railfan visiting from overseas, add this one to Strasburg and Sacramento.

The engines and cars are well restore. Seeing the train snow blower from the 1800's made my husband's day. Enjoy time walking around the tracks and visiting the gift shop.

Just wondering how long you think the average person would need to see just the Lake Superior Railroad Museum?
Thank you!

I agree with the responder who took about 3 hours. That's what we spent.Of course in addition to the exhibits, the train ride should be included. It's a sightseeing tour of Duluth as well as a nostalgia trip.

Was there parking somewhat close to the museum? Thanks.
เขียนเมื่อ 27 กรกฎาคม 2016
There is a lot just down the street from the museum/pretty much connected to the depot museum building. There is also on-street parking but the lot is your best option. Enjoy!
