Very familiar with this area. Highly recommend you purchase a Forest map at the USDA Ranger Station before any exploration. The forest is outstanding and very worthy of a trip for a day, or a month. Much to do.

We stopped in and inquired about how to use our 23 foot RV trailer in the forest lands. They were very helpful and nice to boot.

Great place to camp out prior to entering the BWCAW. Rustic campsites (no electricity, outhouse nearby, fire pit and table) are scattered all over the forest. Most sites are first come first serve and are free. Campsites are roomy and usually only a handful of sites per campground. Quiet and peaceful at night.
We stayed at a campground for grouse opener. It was fantastic! The site was near a boat launch into the BWCAW - took a trail downhill to reach the water. Plenty of downed wood for burning as long as you are willing to haul a ways and saw some logs. The logging trails and gravel roads are perfect for grouse hunting.

The Forest is beautiful and has many different kinds of trees and plants. There stunning views from atop any of the mountains. There are camping sites and hiking trails.

I have made a point of coming up in Sept. or Oct. to hike portions of the trail. Nearly covered the whole thing. Hike out of the state parks. You will have them to yourselves that time of the year.

It was a relaxing and beautiful place to hike and be one with nature. The views of a Lake Superior are breathtaking that go on for miles!!! You don't realize how huge the lake is until you are there!! Beautiful flowing rivers, trails and waterfalls!!!

This isn a huge wilderness area, with lots of roads, lots of trees, lots of lakes, just a few businesses from which to purchase gas/food/beverages/lodging. Having been in the year around destination resort business in the area for many years I enjoyed the opportunity to have a return visit this past July. Visitors should be prepared, gas stops are few and far between, there are a lot of critters, large and small, who travel across and on the roads. Many of the roads are not 70 mph friendly. But the area allows the visitor to experience solitude. Then area is criss-crossed with roads built for the logging industry, some are wide and allow fast transit while others are old, built for travel many, many years ago. Most roads loop back to another road, but not all. One thing that is important to understand is that at junctions the roads are marked by low posts that have numbers. The numbers identify the roads. Upon my visit I stopped in to get a USFS map, which shows the "numbers'" Smart phones and GPS systems have allowed most of us to not be concerned about having a paper map, we "know" that all we have to do is "Trust Garmin" to get us where ever we want to go. But this is a large area, and should your technology fail, it is wise to use the USFS Map to keep track of where you have been and to find where you are when you are at an intersection.

This is a beautifully kept forest. It is in Duluth but you feel as if you are not. Hugh big trees and clean grounds. A great hidden gem.
