It not something you will see advertised but I would recommend going. They are still doing the free lectures on Wednesday. I went on Saturday afternoon (they have a different one in the evening), and it was $ 5. It was worth it. One of the reviewers said the presenter was a no show. This can happen, the planetarium has an enthusiastic director now but it also depends on students. These are dedicated individuals who know their stuff but can be a challenge to schedule. The dome needs some work due to some peeling but this has been around since the late 60s. Finding the door for the building can be challenging just do not give up, it is there. The program consist of a half hour film for children on telescopes and then a half hour demonstration on how to find the constellations. It was definitely worth the five dollars.

We went to the free Wednesday night presentation. It is split into two parts - the first being a lecture on a certain topic (the topic on our night was "strange things in space", which i found very interesting), and the second being a presentation on the constellations in the night sky, which I also found very interesting. My daughter wasn't all that enthused about this because she's done things like this a few times at school, and my husband didn't care for the musty smell in the closed in space. But, for me, it was a highlight of our trip! If you are interested in space and constellations, and you don't mind closed in spaces, I highly recommend!

We went to the planetarium to see the free Wednesday evening show, (08/03/16). We waited outside the locked planetarium doors for 15 minutes with a group of 20-25 other people, but no one arrived to unlock the doors. No information about a cancellation was posted on their website or Facebook page. We contacted the planetarium about the issue. They were very polite in their response, but never gave a reason for the no show. We were quite disappointed.

Go Wednesday evening and it's FREE! Remodeled and new chairs about a year ago. Star guides and education by students and they always do a great job. Different shows each week and throughout the week.

Having had a long interest in star and galaxies, I decided to invite my friends to a showing of the night sky around my birthday sign prior to a celebratory dinner. Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium at UMD accommodates groups from children to senior citizens. We had a great time and my friends continue to bring up one of our most unusual birthday parties ever.

I went to the free public talk at the planetarium this evening. The talk is an hour long with images projected onto the round ceiling. The theme was about the moons of the solar system for the first half and second half about the night sky above Duluth. Really informative and the presenter was passionate about his subject. The talk was pretty full too. Would be good for adults and kids aged about 9+.

There's free star shows every wednesday & friday at 7 pm. And on the weekends, there are full dome science/space shows for a small fee... One of their most popular is the physics of Star Wars. The students who work here make a lot of their own shows, so topics have a wide range of topics!
The free shows are generally an hour long, half being an educational lecture on something related to astronomy while the second half is a planetarium star projected tour of the night sky. These are live lectures and star programs, not prerecorded. The lecturers map out the constellations with a lazer pointer. If you're wanting badly to see a certain constellation, come early and chat with one of the students! They are really good at answering questions & are great teachers.
