We traveled about an hour to see the oldest rock in north america. The museum is closed during the fall and winter unless special arrangements are made ahead of time. But there is a trail along the Minnesota River and several plaques to read and of course the rock. There was ice floating in the river and it was very beautiful. We look forward to returning to tour the actual museum and see the surrounding area in the spring and summer.

We spent about a hour touring the museum. We particularly liked the native beadwork. The historical displays of rooms were well done, too. One odd thing is that items have white tags on them identifying donors and/or item. Museum could be improved with more professional signage rather than handwritten cards.

I have visited most of Minnesota's 87 county museums. This falls in the middle.
One unique artifact is what they call the world's oldest rock. It is located outside. It has many of the typical items of most county museums. There is an old fashioned kitchen. There is information on geology. If you happen to be visiting Granite Falls, it might be worth a 1/2 - 1 hour visit. I wouldn't make a special trip just to see the museum.

HISTORY OF YELLOW MEDICINE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Yellow Medicine County Historical Society was first organized in 1937 with officers from all parts of the county. During the 1940's war and gas rationing caused the organization to disband. In 1949, the society was reactivated in time to observe the Territorial Centennial. To participate in this event, the society gathered artifacts for a pioneer display. The interest was so great that a county museum was established. In 1952, the society became incorporated, and by 1967 a new building was built for the museum , along the Minnesota River. Museum displays tell a story of the geology and archaeology of the Minnesota Valley, Native American history, and pioneer life in the county. The museum maintains a fine historical reference and genealogical library available during museum hours and by appointment.

I would like information about the old town of Minnesota falls, it seems very difficult to get any information about the old abandoned town site. my great grandfather had been a miller there.
Hello Lois! I want to apologize for taking so long to get back to you. We have two Yellow Medicine County history books that have information of both the town and the Township of Minnesota Falls. One of them does have information on an Andrew Steele.
I have been told that the land were the town was is now part of someone's farm land. If you would like to walk around you would have to contact the person who has the land now to see if they will allow you to do so.
I couldn't find any information on where James was buried though. There were no cemeteries in Minnesota Falls, but there were several close by. I found five known cemeteries in the township. Three are public, one is private, and one was abandoned back in the 1890s. I am also going to try contacting some people from the county that might have more information on James. If you could e-mail us at ymchs@co.ym.mn.gov I can send you the information I have and the information I can get in the future.
