Nice little museum chronicling the events of the day of the attempted robbery as well as the events that followed (capture, imprisonment, etc) Would highly recommend for anyone that has an interest in American history.

We enjoyed this cute little museum, right in downtown Northfield. The bank display was very cool with the actual ledgers from the 1800s. We spent about a half hour here, not a huge place. We loved that they had a search and find game for our young kids, kept them entertained while we checked out all the history!

This is highly recommended if you are visiting the area, as it provides excellent knowledge of history in Northfield. The guided tour was very well done by some local high school volunteers. There are a lot of very interesting historical photos and other memorabilia to view. I had no idea that Jesse James and his gang attempted a bank robbery in town!

Simply a must do for any visitor to town. This is what makes Northfield famous. A Jesse James bank robbery! They do informal tours or you can do your own. Worth your time.

This historical stop is well worth your time. It tells the history of Northfield from its very beginning, and has an extensive exhibit about the city's most famous event...the foiled bank robbery by the James/Younger Gang.
The bank building has been preserved wonderfully with the vault, ledger book, and other artifacts from the 1876 robbery attempt available for you to view. During non-COVID-19 times I understand there is an excellent tour. I had to read the story for myself from the exhibit narrative. This was fine, because they have it laid out so well. The tale is compelling with many side stories of the heroic individuals that took on the James/Younger Gang and saved the town and its two fledgling colleges. My visit here sparked an interest to visit other sites of James Gang robberies. I have a feeling the other sites will pale in comparison to this exceptional site.

I wanted to see the museum not realizing it was a guided tour. Alana was an outstanding guide. She had a wealth of knowledge of the events that took place there September 7, 1876. She is from Northfield and used the word we when describing the event showing pride in her town. If interested in the history of Jesse James, this is a must stop.

I was blown away by how many items - original to the Jesse James raid - this museum has, Never mind that it's housed in the original, largely unchanged bank, but pistols, saddles, and rifles from the shootout itself are on display as well. Mind-blowing authenticity.

We stopped in Northfield as part of a "searching our roots" visit to MN. Our family had mentioned that this tour was a must-see. Our tour guide was a lovely local eighth grade student who did a fantastic job in telling us the story of the bank robbery. Cool to see the actual bank area, the ledger and other artifacts. We liked that the tour used student docents, and that it was the perfect length (neither too long nor too short). Museum also has a great exhibit on the local cereal plant's history as well as other items. Great selection of historical books about the robbery, etc. A charming town! We wish we would have had more time to walk around the main street (lots of old buildings with a wide variety of cafes and stores). This town is also home to St Olaf College and Carleton College. My kids (both teens) enjoyed the tour. Worth the stop!

Reason 1: You get to step into the actual room where the attempted robbery took place and stand on 100+-year-old wood floorboards and see the original vault, clock etc.
Reason 2: They still have the actual bank ledger used on the day of the robbery and you can see the blood-stained page from the day of the robbery.
I'll even offer a bonus reason, the person giving our tour actually participates in the re-enactment that occurs each September and was very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject.

September 6-9 as actual robbery happened on the 7 th. Go to their site for times. Also I believe you have to buy a five dollar button to enter the area of hold up. Check out their web site for more information.
