Nice Park, well marked trails

We live less than 90 minutes from this park, and had never been here untilwe attended a wedding in the historic barn. We came back a few weeks later to hike. We followed the Sandbank Trail, the Overlook Trail, the Sugar Camp Hollow Trail, and the River Bottoms Trail for a total of 4 miles. The trails are well-marked and groomed. In one place we had to hop from stone to stone to cross a creek. Nice fall colors are starting... they will be peak around Oct. 10-20. Admission (per-vehicle) is $7 per day, or get an annual pass for all Minnesota State Parks for a year for $35. The Historic Forestville Village has tours for an additional cost, but they weren't open on a weekday after Labor Day. Fine with us, since we were there for the hiking.

Hidden gem

Beautiful location with miles of hiking trails. We visited when there were no guides working, but would like to return and see the historic buildings as well. We did the most basic 1 hour cave tour because one of us was mobility challenged - extra kudos for making that tour accessible! Be aware, though, that there are several fairly steep metal inclines in this often wet environment where it's hard for the person pushing the wheelchair to gain a footing.

The cave was interesting although not the most spectacular we've seen. Our guide clearly had a lot of knowledge, but spoke too fast and was not understandable at times.

We will return to explore the historic Forestville area more thoroughly, but probably will not come back to the cave.

Excellent educational interpretation by the park ranger who gave the tour. Easy walk for all ages. Nice nature center

Horse People Not Welcome

Couldn’t put zero so thought I’d put 1. They love your money, but don’t want to give you a good experience in exchange. Spent a whole week smelling manure in the pits and dealing with the flies. Came in Tuesday and they, after I asked them every day, finally cleaned them out on Friday. Had a friend come join us in her car and after being told to move from a parking lot that would hold 50 vehicles and only had 2 at the most all week, received a citation for not having a park pass. She was told to put it in her windshield, not specifically where, we showed the ranger where it was on the drivers side, he stated it was supposed to be on the passenger’s side. It also had the wrong date on it as she paid for two days and the “host” put one day later. They won’t trim the trees because they are trying to preserve the forest, but they won’t be scratching my $150k rig ever again. Too many fees, too many restrictions, too little hospitality. Got antsy every time I heard a vehicle as we thought they were coming to enforce another restriction. Don’t go here. There are much more friendly parks in Iowa without truck stickers and trail passes. Nice trees!

Wonderful Guides

Our guide was Dan and he was awesome, but we did get to hear snippets of a few other tours and they also sounded good. Dan is, and I'm sure they all are, super interested in the caves and the water that forms them. He showed us the rock formations under black light and in total darkness, he was very interesting to listen to.

Hidden surprise in SE Minnesota

We were out visiting some MN state parks to do some hiking, and came across this park with a cave. Not something you find just every day. The cave tour was pretty interesting, my husband really enjoyed it. The park also had a number of trails to check out. We didn't take the tour of historic Forestville, but there was a live band playing.

Kip is a great guide

We had a very small group and Kip Bolstad was our guide. It was such a fun and informative tour. He made the tour such a great experience. He was able to spend extra time answering questions and showing us all the small details of the cave.

Great tour guide ok caves.

The caves are interesting for sure. Kip, our guide, was probably the best part. Kip was very engaging and enthusiastic on the tour. Honestly, the tour would have been boring and rather lame. Kip was very educated and knowledgeable.

A Variety of Things to Do and See

There's a little something here for just about everyone.

The main park has hiking trails that are gorgeous, especially in the fall and spring. Many of these same trails are great for horseback riding.

Forestville has wonderful historical exhibits/buildings. The tours are excellent, I highly recommend giving them a try.

Mystery Cave is a beautiful cave with a wide variety of formations and features. One fork of the Root River flows through it, cools, and re-emerges several degrees cooler...making it one of the best places in the state for trout fishing. The cave is very flat due to the way it was formed. Unlike many caves, there are very few stairs or steep climbs. This cave is accessible to just about anyone.

There is a lot to do at Forestville State Park. I suggest you check it out.

Mystery cave/Pretty cemetery a great stop!

Amazing place to visit! There’s a fair amount of hiking trails through the state park. If you’re going to the mystery cave and hiking afterwards definitely bring a change of clothes! It’s really cold in the cave so a pair of jeans and a jacket (I’m from Kansas so my cold tolerance isn’t great) was perfect. They only had the 1 hour scenic tour available but it was the perfect amount of time! Hiking afterwards I wore shorts and a tank top (it topped 90 degrees that day). I didn’t get to go down to the spring which I’m sad about. I camped at the Rochester KOA and it was only a 20 minute drive. Although next time I’d like to camp in the park! The Forrestville buildings/tours weren’t going on during the days I was there, but it was still nice to walk around the town and read the descriptions they had in front of each building. The cemetery is a must see!! It’s a half mile hike uphill to see it, but it’s such a tranquil place, and the graves are old 1800’s style which I thought was kind of pretty.
