The Fort is worth seeing, the museum exhibits are really terrific and there's so much to learn about while there. It's an important area and deserves respect and remembrance for sure. My 3 star rating has to do with the guided tour, which is only one hour long but really should be 1.5 hours long. We felt rushed and due to the short time frame and large group of people (25 -30 in our group), the guide was often half way through his speech at a stop before many in the group arrived, so many of us missed much of the information. I was with my mother who is ambulatory but needs a wheelchair for long distances. We were able to catch a little shuttle to get from the parking lot to the museum ticket office. We had to ask for it as it wasn't running automatically but the staff were really nice about it. We used a free wheelchair provided by Fort Snelling and it was in good working condition. The gravel paths were manageable and she was able get to most places, but there were a few tricky spots.

The Fort Smelling Fort is run by The Minnesota Historical Society & there volunteers, as a veteran I don't have to pay an entry fee. From the visitors center in's a short walk to the fort but there are golf carts to take people with walking troubles to the entrance. The Fort itself was still in use up to the second World War & you are giving maps to help you find your way around. The Guild talks about life in the fort from Fur trading to the slavery in the fort, you see the fur house, hospital, CO house. It was a harsh place to be posted to in the early days.

Took my son to visit on a Saturday. While it’s an important part of MN history, there really isn’t a ton to do or see. Glad we live close so it wasn’t a long drive.

Visited the Fort when opened at 10am. Was a warmer day so did not stay and visit all it had to offer so mainly concentrated on the fort. Was very surprised to find being a native American I got free entry with up to 5 people. We started by the river view from the parking lot to see the timeline and walk the path with all the beautiful flowers. It smelled so great. Walk to the fort was short and on concrete. It was great to find MN Historical Society had people stationed all around the fort to give you the history. Of many of the forts we visited this one had the most articles to see besides the buildings and cannons. They said they have made many of them based on readings and picture's to try and share what might have been used. We grab the shuttle cart for the ride back. There was also a chapel and barracks but we did not view them has had a lunch date.

My wife and I arrived around 10:30am. We took the Metro Blue Line light rail from downtown MSP. From the Fort Snelling station we walked back and forth to Fort Snelling. Walking on sidewalks the entire way, it is close to a mile walk each way. It is an easy walk though. We went to the Plank Museum and visitor center to get our admission ticket. Before that point, if you are driving, you need to pay $6 to enter the parking lot. An unmanned gate. As a veteran, my ticket, along with my wife’s, were free. Very nice. Sorry to say I don’t remember what the adult ticket cost. We watched a very informative short film on the first floor, then went upstairs to see the exhibits. Very interesting.. there are restrooms in the visitor center, along with a gift shop, and snacks and drinks for purchase. We toured all of the buildings that were open to us. We ran out of time and did not walk down to the Fort Snelling Sate Park Visitor Center, or the other points of interest in that area. We do need to do that though. Everyone we had contact with while touring the facility, were super friendly and helpful. And the volunteers at many of the stops along the way shared the history of the fort, and what was happening at each of the locations. It was very interesting. There were also several things going on during the day, those were listed on a handout as you came to the visitors center. We had a wonderful visit. It was well worth the time and effort to visit.

I had been here several times, but I wanted to see the changes completed during the pandemic. The old underground visitor center is gone. Visitors can access the center with an outside ramp and elevators inside. Visitors can purchase snacks, tickets to Fort Snelling and souvenirs at a large visitor center. A short film explains the history of the fort in a more balanced version than in the past. Visitors will learn about slavery at the fort and the treatment of Native Americans.
The second floor describes the various groups of soldiers who lived at the fort though large panels. Visitors can also see an aerial view of Fort Snelling during World War II. The visitor center contains several classrooms.
Since the visitor center is the equivalent of several blocks away from the fort, it is open year round with heat and air conditioning. Extra long golf carts seat up to six passengers . Drivers take visitors from the visitor center to the entrance of Fort Snelling. At the fort, staff reenact daily life at the fort in the 1800's.
A trail leads to a river overlook.

I absolutely enjoyed everything I saw about the fort. The downside, I brought 2 under 2 and they were not at all interested and I should have known better. They go bored fast so I’ll have to come back alone.

Great trip! We arrived at approximately 10:15 am and made our way towards the entrance of the museum to buy our tickets. After buying our tickets, we were given a map of Fort Snelling and we began to explore the fort. The main building contained two floors of exhibits to view about the history of Fort Snelling, what daily life on the fort consisted of, slavery at the fort, Japanese incarceration and the various wars that Fort Snelling was apart of- most notably the US-Dakota War. There were several detailed informational plaques that provided additional insight into these topics. There was also a great, roughly 15 minute long introductory movie on the ground floor, that went through a timeline of important events that occurred during the forts existence. Once we finished touring the museum, we made our way to the actual fort. There were different activities and educational seminars being held roughly every 30 minutes on the fort grounds, where the employees would demonstrate different skills/tasks, such as how to fire a military weapon, and how to do laundry at the fort. There was also a 20 minute guided tour that was available, where an employee provided more insight about the fort and gave us a brief introduction of the buildings that we were seeing around us. Each building had an informational plaque in front of it, that provided some background information on what it was used for. Some of the buildings also had various artifacts, along with employees who provided insight and information on what occurred in the fort. Once we finished viewing the fort, we went on a river walk, which consisted of walking on a paved sidewalk, while being surrounded by flowers and water.

Tip: I recommend spending all day here in order to fully experience all the buildings and activities on site.

The Minnesota Historical Society has done a marvellous job in preserving and preseting this crucial piece of U.S. history. Built as a key defensive position against potential Canadian invasion and to ensure border protection, troops trained and based in Fort Snelling participated in every U.S. conflict up to and including the Second World War, where the fort housed Classrooms for Japanese translators. There are credible reenactments and demonstrations, well-informed guides and narrators and the complex past of triumphs (welcoming Nisei soldiers) and tragedies (the mass incarceration prior to expulsion of the Lakota) are not overlooked. Well worth a visit.

We have lived just north of the cities our whole lives and only today did we go to the fort. This was fun and very educational. We brought our son and daughter 13 and 10 and they found it also fun and educational. They had people who were dressed up and showing how certain things were done at the time and other workers who were there to teach as well just dressed in current clothing. This was a great place to visit and for our children. Highly recommended.
