As Civil War historians, my wife and I relish every opportunity to travel along the Mississippi River from Vicksburg to Port Gibson to Natchez to Baton Rouge to New Orleans. So much history, so many beautiful antebellum homes, no many Civil War battlefields, so little change. One of our favorite segments is the Windsor Loop, which includes Windsor Ruins, Magnolia Church, Bethel Church, the ghost town of Rodney and A.K. Shaifer House, all of which played roles in the Battle of Port Gibson in 1863, the first leg of General Ulysses S. Grant's campaign to capture the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg. After crossing the Mississippi River at Bruinsburg, west of Windsor plantation, Grant's troops moved eastward along a sunken, gravel road until confronting Confederate resistance at the A.K. Shaifer house. The battle for Port Gibson had begun. Today, the two-story house, which was built in 1826, mostly of cypress, appears much as it did in 1863, with its walls showing scars from bullets fired during the battle. Afterward, it served as headquarters for Union General John A. McClernand and a Union hospital. It is the only original structure still standing on the part of the battlefield that was here at the time of the Civil War. The surrounding area hasn't changed much, either, with ravines filled with vines and immense canebrakes, steep-sided ridges, deep and muddy road beds. Bridges have been added where once streams were forded. It's peaceful now but a visitor almost expects to hear the road of cannons at any moment. The A.K. Shaifer house is a last witness to history.

It's nice historic house and road is narrow old ravine. There are sunken road Is something to worry about. If you keep west past the house you will likely go into deep woods and need four wheel drive.. Best way is go back where you came in... Be more safe.

We were there a few month ago and could not approach it from the West going East as the bridges were out. The house is representative of antebellum farmhouse architecture.
The Battle of Port Gibson is where Grant's troop were first challenged after they began marching from Bruinsberg Landing on the Mississippi River in their approach for the siege of Vicksburg. This battle is the last spot the Confederates probably could have stopped Grant before he reached open country because it would not been difficult to bring mass of Union troops to bear along the narrow road surrounded by the ravines. Little has changed where the battle was fought along a narrow, ancient road and ravines. Its a peaceful interesting spot. The Campaign is noteworthy here because Grant left his supply chain and went into Confederate Territory "living off the land" and apparently studied because the risk Grant took against his subordinates advise. The sunken road getting there is something to behold.
You don't need 4 wheel drive to get there either. If you continue west past the house site you will likely need a 4 wheel drive vehicle so its best to go back the way you came in.

The first time my wife and I visited the A.K. Shaifer House near Port Gibson, Mississippi, we took the Bruinsburg Road, a gravel road that parallels the paved Rodney Road from the Bethel Church to Port Gibson. Like the surrounding landscape, it has changed little since May 1, 1863, when General Grant's army, after marching past Windsor plantation and Bethel Church, first encountered Confederate troops at the Shaifer House and the first shots of the Battle of Port Gibson were fired. The Shaifer House, a two-story structure built in 1826 and made mostly of cypress, still shows the scars of bullets on its walls. It served as Union General John McClernand's headquarters and a Union hospital. From Windsor, if you don't want to take the 1863-ish Bruinsburg Road, drive east on Rodney Road toward Port Gibson. Travel about 4-5 miles and turn right onto Bessie Weathers Road. The remains of Magnolia Church, a brick foundation and cistern, are at the intersection. Proceed to the Shaifer House. The area has changed little since 1863, which makes this a very eerie but fascinating experience. Ravines are filled with vines and immense canebrakes. Ridges are as steep as when Union troops scaled them. Deep road beds haven't changed. Bridges have been added where once streams were forded. North of the Shaifer House is an old plantation road that both armies used while marching through the area. It is part of the Windsor loop, which includes the Windsor ruins, Bethel Church, ghost town of Rodney and the A.K. Shaifer House.
