Guide Jo Anne provided a knowledgable commentary on the history of the Orphan School for a fascinating hour. The exhibition on the achievements of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was illuminating, with original documents, photos, recordings and video footage in a well curated museum. There was even a recreation of Whitlam's office with his original furnishings. We reached the Whitlam Institute via a pleasant 25 minute stroll along the Parramatta River from the Parramatta Wharf. Plenty of places in the Uni grounds for lunch afterwards. There were lots of buses for the 10 minute ride back to the station. A great day out. Thoroughly recommended.

Excellent hisotorical find, from walking up the steps from the parramatta river to the end of the tour, its truely a great visit, recommend a visit. Thank you

Wonderful way of getting a glimpse into Australia's early colonial history. Past Times Tours does excellent and informative visits in this area

This building, one of the oldest European buildings in Australia, contains so much by which to recall the career of arguable Australia's greatest Prime Minister. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I've been past this building so many times when cycling or walking on the Parramatta River path but it's not visible from the path. It was fortunate the staff had put signs out that day.

Very helpful and friendly staff. Our main reason to visit was the Orphan school and great to get a sense of it, the layout, learn some facts, see some of the few original features left and very grateful it was restored into a usable space, otherwise it might have been lost through all the deterioration and neglect before it was saved.
If you are an art fan and Whitlam fan, then there's lots to see also. Easy to park out the front for $7.

Visited here with family. While we were unfortunate not to have booked a tour, I found it very disappointing that a major piece of Australian colonial history was taken over with modern exhibits. I did think by visiting I would have gained more insight on the fate of convicts children but no. The bounding itself us beautiful and the setting near the river is gorgeous but overall disappointing

This restored building is a rare gem of NSW history and well worth a visit. On three levels you can see the original elements of the walls in a number of places. Its timeline of history over 200 years is fascinating leading to its current occupation by the Whitlam Institute which means it has a great exhibition on the great man himself. It is always running exhibitions and in March commences with Spy : Espionage in Australia from the National Archives in Canberra. It is open Wednesdays to Fridays and there is easy parking out the front. It is on the Western University South Campus Parramatta - use google maps.
