We went from Wasserauen by cable car to Ebenalp. Then we descended via the Wildkirchli route to Seealpsee.
This is a challenging route and small children even need to be sure.
Through the forest with slippery rocky paths it takes between 2 and 2.5 hours to reach the mountain lake. We are not experienced hikers, but if you are calm and careful it is doable.
You should have no fear of abyss, then I would advise against this route. Personally, I would not do the descent with small children either.
Eventually you arrive at Seealpsee and just forget the complete descent. What a view you have over the mountain lake here.
For a CHF 7 you can rent a rowboat for a limited time, but it is really fairytale.
From Seealpsee you can descend on a paved path to Wasserauen. You can do this descent in 40-50 minutes.
This means that you can visit the mountain lake by going up this road from Wasserauen. This is a pretty tough climb, don't underestimate it.

The way up was a bit difficult (for me) not used to walking so much. Once there the view is amazing, all that green. I had to put my feet in the water as they were boiling and it felt great, Stopped by to buy some cheese
as well and had a lovely lunch at the Berggasthaus.

As an over 70 year old, the hike up the service road was pretty intense. I stopped frequently to catch my breath and made it just fine. Coming down was much easier.

One of the most picturesque lakes in the Swiss Alps. It's a paved road for most of the way. Over a thousand foot elevation gain, but well worth the views. Cows and mountain goats along the road, as well as restaurants and inns.

It is quite a hike to get to the top, but you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view. The first spectacular view is behind Berggasthaus Seealpsee restaurant. Which is a delicious restaurant and well deserved after the hike. For the postcard picture, go behind the restaurant and to the left. Climb the short little path to the lake and you will have a phenomenal view of the lake and mountains in the distance. We sat on the rock and took it all in. You have two choices for the hike. One is hike the mountain on the dirt path. You need to have good knees and back. I wouldn’t advise this route for small kids or elderly who aren’t used to hikes. It can be steep at times, but you see beautiful views and small waterfalls as well. The other choice is a paved road which is used for the restaurant, hotel and locals. It is very steep at times so it isn’t an easy stroll. We hiked the dirt path on the way up and down the paved path on the way down. Either way, the top will be worth the effort!

Nagyon szép túrázóhely. A túrapont kezdetén nagy parkoló van. Fent a tó partján pedig több étterem. Végig aszfaltozott úton lehet sétálni.

Enorm mooie omgeving! Wij hebben van de parkeerplaats naar het meer gehiked met de route van een uur. Koeien en watervalletjes onderweg en het meer stelt zeker niet teleur. Net een spiegel. Daarna zijn wij helemaal omhoog gehiked naar de Schäfler en naar beneden via äsher, dit was een pittige maar prachtige hike. Hoogtepunt van onze vakantie

It is a tough climb up to the lake but worth the effort. A beautiful green lake and one can climb up one path walk round the lake and down the other side. Take good boots and sticks are helpful as well

Totally worth the hike to the top for the delicious food. Beautiful cuisine that celebrates local dishes. The views are stunning and the prices are good.

De Seealpsee is een bergmeer, schitterend gelegen tussen de Hohe Kasten en de Säntis. Bereikbaar te voet vanuit Wasserauen via een forse klim over goed begaanbare wegen. Het is zo'n 4 km waarin je enkele honderden hoogte meters aflegt, en dat is zowel naar boven als naar beneden geen lichte wandeling voor mensen die gewend zijn om een tiental kilometers te wandelen in Nederland. De paden zijn steen, grind, asfalt en er zijn tal van geitenpaadjes.
op een mooi zonnige dag is het aardig zweten.
Boven is het wel de moeite waard. Het eerste wat je ziet is het restaurant die Forelle.
De Seealpsee is een prachtig, schoon en helder meer met forellen, waar ze zo in kan zwemmen. (Bergmeer, dus wel koud). Je kan helemaal rond het meer lopen (en ook nog een glaasje melk of yoghurt kopen bij een pittoreske boerderij, lekker tussen de koeien door wandelen en genieten van alle prachtige bergen waar de Säntis natuurlijk een hoofdrol speel.
Als je goed de berghellingen bekijkt zie je steeds meer wandelaars, die behoorlijk zware wandelingen maken; niets voor beginners; veel te gevaarlijk.

What is the best plan to visit Seealpsee with a 1,5 year old child? We have backpack for him, but we prefer to choose any other option without long distance (dangerous) hiking. We would arrive by car from Slovenia. Thank you for your advices.

You have Gondola which goes up all the way to the Ski resort, perhaps you can use that and than hike just some of the way and go back with it. But if you wanna see the lake, I think that you can go with car up to some point.

You can take a train to Ebenalp, or drive to Appenzel - Weissbad and than Ebenalp. There is the begining of the trail

Führt der Weg über offenes Weideland mit Kühen? Wir haben einen Hund und wenn möglich würde ich heikle Situationen gerne „umgehen“ (im wahrsten Sinn des Wortes).

Der direkte Weg führ zwar anfangs an den Kühen vorbei, doch auf der Alp selbst weiden auch Kühe am See. Es herrscht zudem Leinenpflicht auf der Alp.

I was wondering how long it takes to hike down to See Alp See from Ascher Cliff House, and then how long to walk from See Alp See back to Wasserauen train station? It sounds so beautiful. Thank you!

Hike down to seealpsee took us about 3 hours, very hard on the knees as we didnt have poles, we did stop alot to take photos and chat to others, so could be done quicker if needed.. Seealpsee to Wasserauen took us about 2 hours, once again we stopped alot.. its a very easy walk.. We stayed over night at both Seealpsee and above at Berggasthaus Aescher, as we did the para sail from top of the mountain.. Such a beautiful part of the world .. Id definitely stay at one of the accommodations there and not try to do it all in one day.. Enjoy your trip

We(a couple, 40s and beginner-hiker) plan to walk from Wasserauen to Seealpsee, then walk further up to Ebenalp.
Does walking up to Ebenalp requires hiking equipments?
How difficult is it (1 to 5, most difficult)?

We took the cable car up to the top where the guest house and wild kirchli ( church cave) are. Walked down to Seealpsee. Took about 2 1/2 hrs - Fairly easy hike if you have boots and hiking poles. Had lunch at scenic restaurant for about one hr. Walked around the lake and took the scenic route through the woods and cow filled pastures with wildflowers. We did not have poles with us and it would have gone faster and easier had we - because it can be steep and rocky. The entire hike took us 6 hrs start to finish, including cable car. It was definetely worth it...my favorite hike ever!
