Dave and his guides did an excellent job with our group. Dave communicated very well before the trip and everything went smooth. Their knowledge of the river and fishing expertise were excellent. dave and the rest of his team were very personable and professional. Worth the trip! Thank you Dave.

If you love catching fish, and want the right fishing guide to set you up, Kootenai Angler's shop is your only choice in Northwest Montana. Sure there are others to choose from. But if you don't get Dave as your guide, (I never have in 3 trips!) you are assured of having a knowlegeable guide and angler, as Dave. He hires all of his guides and they're vetted for their tasks, stringently. Dave just knows how to pick them! Don't waste your time looking, just find this fly shoppe and they'll do the rest!

This was the best recreational experience of a lifetime in the outdoors. I met a friend from Missouri who knew nothing about fishing, let alone the experience of fly fishing.
My experience is quite a bit beyond my friend. Not to say that I am a professional, but I have fished with a fly rod since the age of about six....72 now. Dave and his guiding staff are all very good in knowing how to instruct the newcomer angler. How to locate the expected hiding spots on the river and make it possible for either skilled angler a great time on the Kootenai River. In five days of fishing different sections of the river we fished with Dave and three of his guides. Who was the best? Of course it was the boss! Not to downgrade the rest of his staff, but they were totally awesome in their own skills.
When you can catch and release so many fish in a couple hours during a hatch that it is impossible to keep count. A fish so big that you will not tell another angler because they would say it is a fish tale. That is really a great day in a lifetime.
The cabins on the property are totally unique and slightly different in their furnishings. Comfortable beds, outstanding views, close to the river. The accommodations are so convenient that it is stupid to not stay on the property. The restraunt and bar are also in the family tradition...Dave’s wife, Tammy, is the owner. Dave is allowed to visit and play with his local bluegrass band on Friday evenings with the best prime rib dinner imaginable. The cook, wait staff, and bartenders all know the skills of five star dining.
A little added fun is going at the time of the year for Sage Grouse hunting is open.
Once again, Kootenai Angler is exceptional.Dave has an amazing Short Hair Pointer that is a great dog for the hunting in the mountains around the river.
Lastly,there is no place better than Kootenai Angler for recreation, relaxation and an exceptionally pleasurable time in Montana.

Very clean quiet place to stay very close to the Kootenai River has a nice full kitchen with everything you need very comfortable on a quiet road would definitely stay there again

Dave has been guiding on this river for a good many reason. One of the things that is so special about his business is he really cares about the environment and it shows with every customer he takes out. Dave believes in catch and release which has helped the fishing on this river a lot. He is so proud of this river that he has taken folks out that just want to see the scenery. Best guide on the Kootenai River.

I've been fishing with Dave Blackburn of Kootenai Angler for about 15 years and this was my third Cast and Blast. The last two were for pheasants and rainbow over on the Missouri near Craig MT but this one we decided to stay close to "home" at the River Bend lodge. We hunted grouse in the mornings and fished in the afternoons. Dave is a great guide and whether you're a newbie or an experienced person, you'll have fun. This trip we tried streamer fishing for big rainbows you could literally see 10' down in the water but the only bite we had was an 8 lb bull trout. Beautiful fish but a protected species and he was released safely back into the river. On two other half days, we caught a lot of the typical 8-14" Kootenai 'bows and 'cuts on dry flys, at least 20-25 fish per day. If possible, ask Dave for a trip up the canyon. Gorgeous, and somewhat "spiritual". On the hunting side, couldn't find grouse in the usual places on first two days but Dave leveraged his contacts to locate a new place for the last day and we had 15+ flushes with some good shooting. Also had a few chances at duck fly-bys while on the river. Every trip out is unique and fun. Also, stayed in one of Dave's cabins and they are well equipped and appointed and comfortable with beautiful views of the river.

My first time to the Kootenai River.....
Our group spent 3 days fishing the Kootenai with Dave Backburn (Kootenai Anglers), and during that that time, I scored 30-40 fish days, all on top, hopper,....and one memorable bull trout (on a streamer)....saw maybe one other drift boat the entire time. Dave is the most accommodating, and easy to be with, guide I've encountered in many years of fly fishing...... low key, no pressure, but an expert guide/outfitter who knows this river and his bugs like the back of his hand. The "Koot" is a classic, big water, Montana River, chosen for its scenic beauty by Hollywood for the filming of "The a River Wild" (Meryl Streep), and currently filming "The Revenant" (Leo DeCaprio). The Kootenai Falls are breathtakingly beautiful. The rental riverside log cabin we had is walking distance to the fly shop/restaurant and was pristine clean, a full kitchen, stone fireplace, 2Br+ loft, etc., etc......a very comfortable mountain retreat. The onsite restaurant was outstanding with a variety of offerings to suit every taste....recommend the grilled prime rib! I will do this again and I think all the members of my fly fishing group would say the same!

My wife and I first met Dave and Tammi Blackburn on our 25th wedding anniversary 8 years ago and we have gone back to join them every anniversary since. Fishing is always great and Dave is not only a great guide and fisherman, he's a great person and lots of entertainment. His entire crew of guides are fantastic. The log cabins they built on the river are perfect and a great place to watch the river, osprey, bald eagles and just relax. Their River Bend Saloon that Tammi runs offers great rustic food and drink - just what you would expect. We have also snowmobiled from there in the winter and it is a short drive to Turner Mountain for skiing. Great place for your kids as well. Kootenai Angler is a slice of heaven.

I have fished with KA for several days every summer for the last six or so years. It's all great. I wouldn't miss it for anything. KA's riverfront cabins are inviting and comfortable, the on-site restaurant has great home-cooked meals, the Libby scene, nestled in the gorgeous mountains, is grand and inviting, KA's host, Dave, and his staff are welcoming, cordial, great companions on the river, not to mention their world-class fishing expertise, smiles and patience with a clumsy fisherman (i.e., me). On top of all this, of course, is the blue-ribbon fishing. My year wouldn't be complete without some time on KA's river. I can't wait to get there next July. Steve C. NYC

My husband and I fished the Kootenai with Dave Blackburn on two different days. Dave was very knowledgeable about the river, flies to use and the best techniques for catching fish. We had fun catching rainbows both days. We loved staying at the Bunkhouse. Very comfortable with a homey, western feel. The River Bend restaurant was a great place to relax after a day on the river. The prime rib was especially good. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We are looking forward to coming back to this beautiful river.
