wonderful place to get some pictures of your kids having fun around some awesome trains. really cool to be able and sit in the window where the whistle is. wonderful history here!

The only Challenger 3900 series steam locomotive on public display in the world. You can actually walk through old rail cars, which includes a mail cars. All cars are filled with old railroad memorabilia. We had never seen a mail car before and it did not disappoint! Be sure to look how mail bags are caught and mail box slots. Ample parking even room for a RV. No admission fee.

We had no idea this cool train museum and depot display could be found at North Platte's city park until we saw it listed in a "local attractions" type brochure and decided to head over there from the Golden Spike Tower, which was our reason for coming here while traveling cross-country.
If you are a railroad buff for whom visiting the Tower with its panoramic view of the world's largest classification yard (Bailey) was high on your "list" to see, be sure to add Cody Park and you will not be disappointed.
Not only can you see Challenger Engine #3977 -- once the largest engine on the rails and now one of only two remaining "3900" class engines -- but you can walk leisurely through the locomotive AND its cars, including the Railroad Post Office (RPO) car complete with its letter sorting facility, and the old steel caboose.
And that is not all. You can do the same for Union Pacific DD40X diesel locomotive #6992 and its consist. This is one of the railroad's 'Centennial" locomotives, built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike in May 1869 -- hence, a "6900" class engine.
I found it extraordinary that we could wander so freely in this "lost world" of trains, guided by our own interests and enthusiasms rather than hurried along in group formation led by a guide. There are informational displays that you can read on board both trains, and you will find much more in the old depot right by the tracks, which is now a very interesting museum as well as the office, on that day, of a personable expert named John, whom we happily encountered when we visited. .
John had the background and the experience to answer all of our questions, and he usefully offered a great deal more information and perspective, making our visit very satisfying and enjoyable. If you want to sit down on the front porch to chat about any aspect of railroad history and operations -- including details of the two locomotives on permanent display -- he is your man, with a large store of information and an even larger amount of enthusiasm for his subject.
John may not be on duty when you visit; but do check out the museum and reach out to the person in charge if you have questions or comments, or if you would like explanations of the exhibits on display. This kind of personal touch adds a lot to the experience of being here.
Do bring the children, who certainly will enjoy walking through the giant trains and seeing all the cool things on board.
The museum is open from May1 through the third full weekend of September, Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 7 PM, and Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM.

The Cody Park Railroad Museum is one section of the larger recreational area of Cody Park. The trains on display are awesome. Walking through the interior of the train some of it is set up as the train was originally and some sections are set up as museum displays. There is also a small train depot museum there as well.

great place to see actual trains. this park has a challenger and big jack locomotives on display and at night the train lights are lit up

Small area of the public park is dedicated to the railroad museum but it packs a lot into that space. Highlight is a beautifully preserved Challenger locomotive, the second largest steam engine built (just 11 feet shorter than the Big Boy). Also includes a Heritage diesel locomotive and several Heritage cars, of which the railroad Post Office car is worth more of your time as it provides a unique view of the railroad postal service in times gone by.

The depot housed a small museum but the main focus were the railcars and engines. There was a steam engine on display as well as a diesel engine. Both were nicely restored and seem to be well taken care of. There was a caboose that you could go in and walk all they from there through the mail car and baggage car all the way to the back of the steam engine. You could even go inside the engine and look around. It was a lot of fun.

I found this place while walking thru Cody Park, past the tennis and soft ball, but there is also a side entrance. You can drive straight to it as there is parking designated for visitors to the train museum.
There are 2 huge engines and a set of railroad cars to explore - it’s all self tour. You can also visit the small museum in a signal box setting - sign the visitor book. There is an attendant there who can answer any questions you have.
It’s all very well done and interesting even if you aren’t a train fanatic. Best of all - it’s all free.

A steam engine and diesel electric engine and several cars are on display and open to go in. We very much enjoyed checking out all of the things in the train cars. We have been to more than a few train museums, but none that have this many engines and cars to explore. We struck up a conversation with a young couple and got a lot of information from the man (he works for a railroad company in another state), so we were there a couple of hours. The small museum also has some interesting things. My husband returned later in the day to explore further. I am not sure if we will return to this area,but if we do we will visit again. This museum is free but has a donation box.
The address (1402 N Jeffers St) on TripAdvisor is wrong. I also found 1400 as the address when I searched web (also wrong). I think the address is 1601 N Jeffers St. (definitely an odd number, not an even number). It is easy to miss because the train museum is in the back past the tennis courts.

The Challenger steam loco on display is a rare breed, but the DD diesel locomotive, while significant in being the biggest diesel ever made, can be seen elsewhere also. Uniquely here though, you can enter the cab and touch the controls to get a feel for the Egineer's experience in these behemoths. The interior of the depot is interestingly presented with railway memorabilia.
