We enjoyed visiting Lake Ogallala as always. It is currently undergoing repair and soon to be restored. Wonderful SRA with lots of camping spots and some good fishing.

We stayed in the East Ogallala Lake Campground, site 35 on August 29, 2022. I looked on line to reserve a site and every site showed as "Available", so my husband and I planned to drive through and choose the site we liked best. Low and behold, there were at least 20 campers already set up (there were plenty of other camp sites) The camp hosts followed us to our site and were in a tizzy because we hadn't made a reservation. After explaining the reservation site showed that ALL the sites were available, they then said, " The online reservation site is horrible and everyone has problems with it." When I tried to make the reservation after our camper was set up, I wasn't able to. You can not make a reservation for that day on the website after 6:00 pm, and the camp hosts can not accept payment. And there was no phone number for after hours reservations.
Regarding the campground, the roads are old chip-and-tar type, and are in need of repair. The majority of sites are barely level.
There is one shower house for the entire campground, and several Port-o-Potties placed along the entry road. There are also 2 vault toilets for the entire campground. The lake is beautiful, but unfortunately, the smell outside is extremely bad (like sulfer; we assume this is a result of the low water levels), so we were " stuck" in our camper with the A/C on to mitigate as much smell as possible. Our camper stunk inside for a full day after we left.
Also, they charge a "State Park Access Fee" in addition to the camping rate of $12 a day for out of state vehicles. And contrary to the advertised rate of $30/day, we were charged $39.78 for an overnight stay. We were told that there was an additional transaction fee and taxes added onto the $30. So the total cost for us was $51.78 for a 15 hour stay.
We have stayed at many State Park Campgrounds, and we often seek them out because they are normally extremely nice. I can say that I will never again stay in a State Park Campground in Nebraska, after this misadventure.

IF YOU LIKE NOISE...AND NO POLICEING...WEST CAMPGROUND IS THE PLACE FOR YOU. Ok..I have an RV, generator, etc. And I'm respectful. But..at 2 AM withe loud music and generators running..wtf
There ARE NO QUITE HRS..PERIOD. ThIS would be a 9 or 10 campground..BUT NO
It is loaded with inconsiderate AS who don't GD about others. PERIOD. Don't bother to bring your little ones...they won't sleep. They run their generators 24/7.

Nice lake to relax and watch the clouds go by. Lots and lots of campsites along the banks of the lake. Basic camping sites for tents ($15/night) are in good condition, and camper sites are plentiful and most are in shaded areas.

Great campground with many sites (electric and non-electric) on the lake front. The campground is peaceful & quiet. Some road noise when the wind is out of the west, but, even then, it's minimal. Sites are well spaced & often separated by mature trees which also provide a lot of shade
Shower house is conveniently located. Port-a-potties are extremely clean.
Easy to find. Signage is great... Well marked. One GPS tried to take me west of Ogallala, but since it's obvious that Lake Ogallala is just east of Lake Mac, it was readily apparent that was a mis-direction. The other GPS was spot on.
Sites are either primitive or electric-plus. Both are standard tags for the state of Nebraska. Electric plus generally means each site has electricity and water is available in the campground. Faucets are painted red and easy to spot. They are not intended for individual hookups, so fill up on your way in.
The primitive sites are non electric but can accommodate RVs as well as tents.
Reservations are required during peak season, but same day reservations may be possible at the visitor center. Reservations are not required off season & rates go down $5 daily.
There's a recycle facility at the visitor center for aluminum, plastic, & cardboard.
Given the high water table at Lake Ogallala, it's not possible to have a dump station at the campground. There is one readily accessible just up the road at Martin Bay that is free to use.
There's a pea gravel/dirt trail from the campground suitable for hiking or biking as well as a similar two track connecting the east and west campgrounds.
This campground has everything you want in a campground. You won't be disappointed.

We camped at the East Campground. Just for one night as heading west. We were near the Lake so it was a bit of a walk to the bathrooms and showers. That is not a problem except in the middle of the night!

Although this is a pretty park with views of Lake Ogallala, the negatives outweigh the good. It was very difficult to find, the signage was poor and directions were not accurate. We found the right park on the third try.
We reserved an "Electric Plus" site, but what was the "Plus"? There was no water at campsite and no indication on website. A fellow camper directed us to a water spigot. And, there was NO dump station at the park! The sites themselves were nicely spaced, fairly level, and paved. There was a lot of small trashy items on site (cigarette butts, bread ties and fasteners, bottle caps). This should be cleaned by camp host, but fellow campers should be more courteous and realize that over time these small items become an eyesore.
The water was pretty and we saw three eagles on our two night stay. We did not use the bath house. If you do decide to stay here, do't expect much.

After driving south from Canada between snow storms it was great to arrive at Lake Ogallala and go for a walk. The trees were changing color, the sky was clear and blue, it was warm...lovely. We walked to the smaller dam and saw many birds. Red-winged blackbirds, white pelicans, pipits, sparrows, and ducks. There were many campsites and picnic sites. The cost for a day visit was $6 a car for locals, $8 for foreigners.

I was traveling from Illinois to California, via Interstate 80. I decided to camp my way across America, using your basic tent! As a side bar comment, there are not too many retired tent campers any more, so my tent was a bit of an oddity!
I chose to camp at Lake Ogalalla State Recreation Area. As a non-resident, I was required to purchase a 2019 Daily Park Permit, for the one day stay. The cost for this non-resident pass is $8.00. It can be purchased on-line. The Nebraska Game & Parks site will attach a Park Entry Permit, to the reservation, which you can print for display on your dash for the day of your stay.
To reserve the actual camp site, you will need to set up an account with ReserveAmerica. This can be done on-line, (password protected). The camp sites, on the shores of Lake Ogallala, cost $30.00 per day (check in @ 4:00 PM check out next day @ 2:00 PM). ReserveAmerica charges an $8.50 transaction fee, (to reserve on-line), Nebraska charges $.43 logging tax and $.47 sales tax. Total reservation cost is $39.40. This includes 30 or 50 amp hook-ups for motor homes. There is also a 15 amp service. There is no water on-site, so you'll have to fill your container at the faucet. There is a nice clean Restroom, with flush toilets, near the camp sites. There are also four showers, at the back of that Restroom. Unfortunately, the showers are coin operated, ($ 0.50 - 3 min.; $0.75 - 4.5 min.; $1.25 - 6 min.), I found the 4.5 min. shower adequate. I had quarters, but a change machine is available.
For a tent camper, the price is a bit steep! But for the large motor homes, that were all around me, it seemed quite comfortable and worth the 50 amp service. Lake Ogalalla is very nice. You are actually camping on the lake or forebay below the Lake McConaughy dam, (Lake McConaughy is 21 miles long - very large! A road crosses the top of the dam and leads to the town of Ogalalla. There are picnic tables at the camp sites and paved parking spots for you vehicle.
If you want to eat out, Ogalalla is about 8 miles south, and you could grab dinner there. This camping site is quite, an important feature for a tent camper! You don't want to be too close to I-80, with the traffic noise!
Have fun!

We are new to the Denver area and so were looking for a spot to take our RV and camp over Labor Day weekend. Lake Ogallala SRA is a 3-4 hour drive from Denver up I-76 and is part of the much larger Lake McConaughy and Lake McConaughy SRA. Lake Ogallala is the lake below the Lake McConaughy dam, and is technically a different lake and SRA from McConnaughy. This review is regarding our RV Camping Experience in the dedicated camping area in the Lake Ogallala SRA.
LOCATION: One must drive over the Lake McConaughy dam to get to the Lake Ogallala camping areas, if coming from the direction of Ogallala, NE. Take a very sharp turn off the dam-road, and go down the hill (dam), then exit the paved road onto a dirt road at the bottom of the hill (dam). Buy your park/SRA passes there, which are required even if you have pre-paid your camping spots. There are TONS of primitive camping spots past this check-in station, which are between the base of the dam and the shore of Lake Ogallala. There were hundreds of RVs and tents pitched all along the base of the dam on the Labor Day. There are no electric or hookups in this area, but there are the occasional community water spigot and a few porta-potties. Stay on the paved road and drive past the dirt road with the check-in station, and there is a paved turn-off leading to numbered and prepared camping sites. The camping here is designed for RVs, but there were numerous tent-only groups camping. Some of these spots have 30A/50A and some 30A-only electric. All have electric one way or another. No sewer or water, though there are “community water spigots” scattered around. COME WITH YOUR RV FRESH WATER TANK(S) FULL, as the odds are you won’t be close enough to hook up to water, and even if you are, you won’t be able to stay hooked up, since everyone else is stopping and filling up at the spigots. We didn’t know this until after we were fully setup, and ended up hauling water to our trailer 5 gallons at a time. Our RV surge protector said the electric at our site was wired correctly.
AMENITIES: Electronic-only at the camp sites. Otherwise 1 standard fire ring and picnic table at each site. About half of the campground can be reserved ahead of time, and about half of the sites are first-come first-serve. Most sites on the water can be reserved ahead-of-time. There are 2 sets of community showers in two buildings: One building says “closed”, and looks abandoned. The second building has pay-as-you-go showers, and looks relatively new and modern. 1 quarter/3 minutes as I recall.
AREA: Mosquitos were awful, so bring spray and other necessaries. There are a number of small restaurants around the lake within easy driving, but not many. Everything is in town, and the closest Walmart is off I-80 about 20 minutes from the campground. Your “park passes” will get you into the Lake McConaughy beach areas across the dam-road. There is a visitors center about 5 minutes back across the dam toward Ogallala, with a small theater and some stuff little kids would enjoy (mounted critters, pelts that can be touched, etc).
This is a nice area, and we were told one of the best areas for a quiet camping experience. We’ve already booked Labor Day 1 year ahead, and will be going back.
