Hill Hikes and Stream Views

This small state park outside of Hackettstown was a wonderful place to go for a vigorous hike over a couple hours. Parking is along a beautiful stream, with nice places for picnics built by eagle scouts. There are pavilions and playgrounds available for larger gatherings and children. We instead decided on a hike up the hillside and back down. It was pretty quiet while we were there, vigorous uphill walk, but decent. No big sweeping views, but quiet forests. Nice place for the community.

Nice, safe trails

Trails are color coded, so are a bit more strenuous than others. Gentle paths along the river. Can be crowded in the picnic areas and along the river on the weekends.

Not much of a park

I was intrigued by the pictures but it was not worth it. There are signs everywhere restricting what you do and not great access to the "river".

Great place for a barbecue

If the weather is nice the park is a great place to go and make your own barbecue at one of the picnic tables along the river.

Great trails!

I bring my seven year old nephew here often. He loves to look for turtles and frogs along the stream and stop at the playground on our way out! It is a great park for people of all ages and it's never too crowed. They have grills and picnic tables along the water for anyone to use and you can stop in the office for an updated map of the park. They are always super helpful. Thinking of camping here next weekend! If you're in the area, definitely stop in. You can see some great wildlife, including black bears, hit the trails, cook out-enjoy nature, and even stay for a few nights!

Not what it used to be.

We've been going to Stevens State Park for many years. It used to be a wonderful quiet place where you could spend a few hours with family, have a picnic or BBQ, and enjoy the sound of the rushing water from the river.

Sadly, those days appear to be over. Last weekend (July 2018) our family planned an afternoon at the park. We were somewhat surprised that the parking lot was filled to capacity.

We decided to find a place to picnic despite the crowd. We were soon discouraged by the number of people playing loud and offensive music. We hiked down the path quite a ways to finally find a picnic table as far from the noise as possible. We setup our picnic and began to eat when another group moved in to the next table area upstream. Sadly, they also brought their boombox and annoying music.

Okay, I can deal with a little music but this was very loud and offensive. We decided to stick it out. Our neighbors were soon in the swimsuits in the river (swimming is not allowed) and they began drinking and being very loud. Soon their beer cans started floating down the river. My kids fetched several out so we could throw them away.

We gave up and decided to leave early. On the way out we detected a number of picnic tables that had been abandoned but tons of trash was left on it. This is a carry-in carry-out park. My wife was so angry that she went to ranger station to complain - primarily about the drinking and loud music. He said that he was the only person on staff and he had to attend to the office to process in campers. Thus, there was nothing he could do. He gave her a number where she could call and complain. Apparently, the park is managed by the same manager that manages Hopatcong State Park.

We also observed that about a third of the license plates were from NY. We learned from the ranger that when Hopatcong State Park is filled to capacity, the urbanites who are turned away are now going to Stevens - which explained all the NY plates and all the loud and offensive people - drinking, littering, and basically being bad citizens.

It's too bad. It used to be a nice park. But we will not be going back - at least in the summer. Maybe by Fall, when the crowds leave, it will be back to it's quite peaceful self. We'll see.

Spent a weekend camping here and all I can say is its an amazing park. For both couples and family's this park is quite and offers a warm environment. The folks at the park office are more than helpful. If your coming from out of town, there is a super Walmart that has great grocery prices. We saw some wildlife and the trees are perfect.

Family reunion

Held our family reunion here for the second year. Had a great time being at this park! Plenty of parking, picnic tables, trails and children's playground.

Started out good...but then...

There is no fee to get in...and maybe that should be reconsidered. We came to cook breakfast, and there are grills to cook on. But, unlike at Swartswood State Park, no one comes around to clean out the ashes, thus people sweep them onto the ground and you are forced to stand in muck while you are cooking. There were lots of people from out of state, and it got very busy. People were literally walking right through our picnic spot, and I though there were going to invite themselves to sit down and eat - no sense of space or manners. Then the music started...I appreciate music, but why do you have to play it so loudly. A n n o y I n g ! Others were annoyed too. People were smoking Hukka pipes in several locations. There was never any sign of a park ranger, other than to yell at my daughter in law when she picked a flower out of an obviously untended to garden. I won't go back on a weekend again, maybe a week day when all the city folks aren't there.
