I got to visit the museum again for Scarecrow Day when patrons were able to create their own masterpieces with their own clothes. All the scarecrows faced the street and gave their own impressions of their creators.
I got to see the children's room again lined with vintage toys and the farmhouse kitchen. The museum could use a good reorganization of the displays but for a small museum it has some interesting displays. The farmhouse kitchen and laundry room are fascinating if you would like to know how a housewife did all that work before electricity.
It is a nice way to spend the afternoon.

I did not even know existed until recently. This place is actually a house converted into a museum. Small, but there are some ilocal interesting items to see. I would suggest you check this place out (if local) on a rainy day...not worth driving out of your way..

I have lived in the area for over twenty years and I had never heard of this museum. It is more like a historical home as opposed to a regular musuem.
The museum is a small Dutch Colonial Farm House with deep roots in the community. I have to say that the condition of the house could use a lot of work and a good paint job.
The collection though is very interesting. The bottom floor holds a collection of farm equipment from the area and a turn of the last century kitchen and work area that is set up to imitate life in the household in the 1890's. Very interesting historical items in the display especially in the kitchen.
The main floor is a revolving exhibition, the current one is of a well-known doctor from the community. The main room is on historical buildings that have been lost to demolition or new construction.
The upstairs holds the museum's collection of historical dolls and toys, which if mounted correctly would be interesting with the amount of items that range over the years and the other half respects the State's mining past. This is a must for the interested child.

Local history buffs and fans of William Carlos Williams will enjoy this museum and its small-scale, intimate events. Warning: front steps to museum are steep, (use the side entrance if open) as are the interior staircases.

Like many local and community museums, The Meadowlands Museum is dependent on the kindness of strangers as well as of friends to provide it with artifacts for preserving and to display. It is located in an old house on a busy road. Parking can be problematic. There is limited space inside. But what it lacks in physical amenities it more than balances with creativity and resourcefulness. This is another way of saying that its strengths come from not what it is but from who is staffing and guiding it. At the moment there are two informative displays featuring Becton Dickinson, which began in Rutherford, and the poet William Carlos Williams, who practiced medicine in Rutherford for many years. He delivered approximately 3000 babies, and the Museum is trying to organize a get-together of those he brought into the world.

The highlight for my son was the rocks that glow in the blue light, that was worth the visit in itself. I never knew New Jersey was so full of rocks like this! There are also many displays about local artifacts, mostly from the European settlement of farms in the local area and how the Europeans lived in the area when they first arrived. The museum is in an old home. It's not a giant place, but it is worth a short visit, especially if you are from the local area or are interested in these neat rocks!
