Ruins, a museum and a pioneer settlement at this interesting site. You can walk or drive down the hill to tour ruins and settlement. When done touring go back up to the museum and see some fascinating artifacts and photos. Admission is very reasonable and they offer a senior discount.

We actually didn't know about Salmon Ruins and Museum until we gave the New Mexico Atlas and Gazetteer a close gander on our way north from Alto to visit Aztec Ruins. We are really glad we took that little detour in Bloomfield. This is a real treasure and the staff in the Museum and Research Library were great. I could have probably spent another hour just checking out all the items and info cards. There was also a special exhibit of aerial images of the mesas and pueblos, really interesting. Once we had spent some time in the museum we headed down to the ruins and enjoyed having the site essentially to ourselves... and the peacocks.

We did a full day tour (8am - 5pm) of Chaco Canyon through the Salmon Ruins Museum on a sunny, cool day in early March, 2024. Our guide (and driver) was Tori Myers, a professional archeologist from the Museum. We highly recommend the tour. It's a fascinating site and we were able to get right inside the village and buildings. Having Tori with us to explain the people, the site and the history of the area made the whole day. Tori shared her extensive knowledge and made the Canyon come alive. Thanks, Tori! Also: the tour leaves from and returns to Bloomfield and includes a car and driver and packed lunch, as well as a guide. We stayed in Farmington the night before and after, which made for short drives to meet the tour and afterwards. The Salmon Ruins Museum is also interesting.

Salmon Ruins has guided tours to Chaco Canyon. Torri Myers is the archeological guide we hired to drive us in a high clearance six passenger vehicle on a full day tour to Chaco Canyon. I would strongly suggest not taking your own vehicle on the unmaintained road to Chaco Canyon. Torri is extremely knowledgeable about Chaco and during the 1 1/2 hour drive educated us for the upcoming visit. She was able to show us alternate paths to take in some of the ruins to avoid difficult trails. At 81/78 years we were very appreciated of this. The younger individuals on the tour did the overlook trails. We hired Torri 8 years ago to take us for a six mile hike in the Bisti Wildness. This is an amazing area of very strange rock formations that can not be done without a guide since there are no marked trails. I was able to photograph some very unusual geological other worldly sights. On a previous visit to Chaco Canyon without a guide twenty years ago I bottomed out the rental car causing a slow gasoline leak. And really did not understand what I was seeing. Having Tori teaching us this time make the entire trip very well worth it. And we came away with an understanding of a culture that existed in Chaco Canyon for over 500 years.

After taking the steep incline down we see visitors parking. Not sure why they did not tell us. I would have greatly appreciated it because I have bad knees w replacement in 3 weeks. So just know there is a lower parking lot if needed.
As far as the ruins … they are not maintained as well as they could be. Having to carry a booklet around with info becomes tedious. A little basic info with number would be helpful,especially when you don’t bring your reading glasses. Too long of a walk & steep incline up for those. It just overall all had a messy not attended to look. It was ok.. but if you only have time for one and want a good one go to Aztec Ruins. Just a little bit north of this one.

The ruins visible here are worth seeing, and there's a lot to see. Nothing spectacular, mind you. But it's a pueblo that you can walk through, in between, and around a lot of rooms and kivas. There's a wonderful guide to it all that you can bring with you as you wander.
Wait, there's more. The museum is really interesting and caters to kids and adults. And there's a gift shop with a good range of things to browse.
We were happy we came. Note that walking the trail among the ruins can be challenging to some. Rough trails and lots of up and down. Not everyone will be able to manage it all, but the museum should be accessible.

We had two excellent guided tours with Tori Myers, the Museum’s Archaeologist, Ceramic Specialist, Education Coordinator, Museum Curator and Research Librarian. We spent one day in Largo Canyon in the Dinétah, primarily viewing wall art (the weather foiled plans for high elevation views), and one day in Chaco Culture National Historic Park. Tori’s deep expertise and knowledge of these important archeological sites was invaluable. We had engaging dialogue and learned a great deal that just looking at the sites or reading a guide book would not have provided. Tori did the driving, which was helpful on the rough roads!, and she arranged to bring lunch. Her advance email provided plenty of guidance about what to expect (eg. About the heat). The museum itself has some interesting exhibits and photographs and a lovely gift shop. I would highly recommend engaging the expertise of the folks at the Salmon Ruins Museum if you plan to tour these canyons!

Museum in front with ruins walking tour out back. $4 per adult, beautiful building..all owned and run by dedicated volunteers who are super nice even if you are new to ruins.

We passed by this 1000 year old native american ruins on our way to Taos and we turned around to go back and check it out. We were able to enjoy everything in about an hour. The people working there were very friendly and informative. It turned out to be quite interesting and well worth our time to stop. There is a small charge ($4) to get in to the museum and walk the around the ruins, but it is nonetheless very highly recommended.

My friends and I recently took two 8-hour tours from Salmon Ruins -- Arches & Archeology and Chaco Canyon -- with their amazing curator and archeologist, Tori Myers. With Tori as guide, the tours were highly informative and insightful about the people and their history. We were enriched by Tori's passion, knowledge and energy. And I highly recommend the tours sponsored by Salmon Ruins.

Only if in area. Aztec ruins ( in Aztec) much nicer and more to see. There is s phenomenal woman ranger at Salmon ruins who takes private tours into Chaco snd that combination is definitely worth acvacation.

Many reviewers mention "Tori" as the perfect tour guide for Chaco Canyon....how does one book her for a tour??
